Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, meeting minutes & office notes. Examples are: letters (12/59-1/60) from San Diego constituent Arthur G. St. John, Wilson & Roger Ernst (Assist. Secretary of the Interior) re/ Mr. St. John’s “urging congressional action toward establishment of a national park in the Green River region of Colorado and Utah . . . . [an] area now designated as Dinosaur National Monument;” a letter (2/18/60) from Mrs. Pauline W. McNally (Secty., The Kern River Plateau Assn. Inc.), attached copies of the Assn.’s meeting minutes for Sept., their Progress Report (1/10/60) & their “Five-point program with respect to the Wolf Report” emphasizing “recreational use will be the highest use for this forested area;” letters (Feb.-Mar. 1960) re/ responses to a La Jolla constituent’s query as to a timber company’s locked gate inhibiting tourist access to forest lands on the Kern Plateau; a letter (3/29/60) from T.M. Heggland (CAO, County of San Diego) & Wilson’s reply (4/7/60) re/ a County Resolution concerning the program for the national forests as proposed by the Agricultural Dept. in April 1959; letters (4/19 & 4/26/60) re/ constituent request for copies of the “1949 Agricultural Yearbook on TREES and the 1952 Yearbook on INSECTS;” a letter (4/22/60) from Emerson Smith (Chairman, California Forest Practice Comm.) & Wilson’s reply (5/2/60) re/ Wilson thanks Mr. Smith for placing “my name on the mailing list to receive the Forestry Digest and The American Tree Farmer;” letters (5/2/60) from Donald S. Teague, Jr. (Santa Paula, CA), one to Congressman Aspinall (Chairman of the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs) and the other to Wilson re/ Mr. Teague’s support for conservation measures such as the “Wilderness Bill, HR 1960 and SB 1123;” letters (May-June 1960) from Alpine constituent William A. Doerr, Wilson & Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner N. B. Bennett, Jr. re/ Mr. Doerr’s “interest in a [marina] concession at the reservoir now being developed on the Trinity River in California;” letters (6/5/ & 6/10) re/ Wilson responds to a constituent concern about protecting the Rainbow Bridge National Monument by indicating that “The House Appropriations Committee deleted funds required to build retaining walls around the arch” as not necessary; Wilson letters (6/21/ & 6/22/60) to Jeffery Clark (San Diego) re/ “Enclosed is your Junior Forest Ranger Kit, along with related material;” letters (May-July 1960) re/ San Diego constituent Mrs. J. Morley’s frustration with the current Wilderness Bill as not being up to snuff on protecting conservation needs such as protecting the Rainbow Bridge National Monument, as well as her frustration with some of Congressman Wilson’s responses to a League of Women Voters questionnaire; letters & office note (8/60) re/ a constituent with a summer home in the Seal Harbor section of Acadia National Park appeals to Wilson because of his “concern about the constant growth and encroachment on private land by the Acadia National Park;” letters (July-Aug. 1960) re/ Wilson and the Regional Forester in Ogden, Utah respond to Chula Vista constituent W. G. Hanson’s complaints about inadequate roads and trails in the Idaho Primitive Area within the Payette National Forest; a letter (8/24/60) from Harvey O. Banks (Dir., Dept. of Water Resources, CA) & Wilson’s reply (8/26/60) re/ requesting Wilson’s “support for appropriations for the San Dimas Experimental Forest” – Mr. Banks reminded Wilson that “The forest fire of July 20, 1960, in the San Gabriel Mountains . . ., not only denuded thousands of acres of valuable watershed lands, but destroyed nearly all facilities and vegetative cover in the San Dimas Experimental Forest;” letters (Sept.-Oct. 1960) re/ a copy of Governor Brown’s letter to Defense Secretary Gates requesting “the use of the 314th Reserve Troop Carrier Squadron, McClellan Air Force Base, during the fire season;” a letter (11/21/60) from 19 year old Miss Sharon Williams & Wilson’s reply (12/1/60) re/ her request for information on a summer job with the National Park Service – Wilson sent her a list of addresses for the National Parks.
