Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, statements, resolutions, news clippings, office notes, National Park Service information, memorandum, a postal card & National Park Service brochures. Examples are: letters (Apr.-May 1961) from George N. Kimball (Cornell Club of San Diego), Wilson & Jackson E. Price (Acting Dir., National Park Service) re/ constituent inquiry concerning the Glacier Peak Wilderness area termed “The Wilderness Alps of the Stehekin” and movie emphasizing same; a letter (5/19/61) from La Jolla constituents Mr. & Mrs. Roy M. Mason & Wilson’s reply (5/31/61) re/ opposition to draining the marsh for campsites in a proposed State Park on the Del Mar side of Torrey Pines; letter & statement (4/61) from the Citizens Forestry Study Group of San Diego County & Wilson’s reply (5/12/61) re/ “seeking increased appropriations for next fiscal year for the Cleveland National Forest and its three southern California neighboring forests” and focusing on “the drought which is the worst in history;” a letter (5/29/61) from the Fire Research Council (Sacramento, CA), their attached Resolution & Wilson’s reply (6/5/61) re/ inadequate funding for fire-weather forecasting & asking Congress to initiate strengthening the program; letters & news clipping 6/61) re/ need for more money for fire protection in Southern California as proposed by the Watershed Fire Council; a letter (3/14/61) from San Diego constituent Mrs. A. Thoeny, news clipping & Wilson’s reply (5/22/61) re/ “mutilation of Balboa Park by additional roads or freeways” – Wilson sympathized with the loss of park lands and hoped it would be the last taking of park lands; a large packet of corresp. (Mar.-June 1961) re/ San Diego and California Wildlife Federation concerns over “The Squatters upon the Lower Colorado River;” a packet of letters & statements (Apr.-June 1961) re/ extensive coverage of National Park information and expenses and concerns of politically conservative constituents (the Taylors) about government expenditures; letters (Apr.-May 1961) re/ responses to constituent concerns “over the possible closing of the Potomac Park Motor Court;” letters (May-June 1961) re/ response to Wilson’s concern “about the hazardous conditions of the Cleveland National Forest and surrounding areas of San Diego County;” letters (June-Aug. 1961) re/ Wilson and the National Park Service respond to complaints from constituent Ralph R. Radford (Radford Overhead Doors) about poor sanitary facilities in the Yosemite National Park – they appear to have not been changed in the last 25 years; memorandum & letter (8/61) re/ constituent concerns about the route of Interstate 8 between the California border and Yuma, Arizona; postal card and letter (7/31 & 8/9/61) re/ a constituent complaint against a Forest Service Patrolman on Mt. Palomar; letters (9/61) re/ 10 year old Ricky Serr of La Mesa is concerned about forest fires and favors punishment for arsonists & Wilson agrees – attached news clipping of map showing Wild Cat Canyon & Mesa Grande fire locations; letters (Aug.-Sept. 1961) & excerpt from Parade – 8/6/61 re/ responses to Santee constituent Mrs. Gordon Stone and discussion of Wilderness Bill and preservation of the Grand Canyon; letters (10/61) re/ responses to La Mesa constituents Mr. & Mrs. Newell Berglund concerning their accommodations at the Yosemite National Park; stapled packet of letters (July-Oct. 1961) re/ the complaints of San Diego constituent Edwin A. Mueller are responded to as to his accusation of “‘excessive and arbitrary flaunting of authority’ of the Forestry department” fire protection policies on Palomar Mountain; a letter (11/1/61) from the Secretary of Interior Stewart L. Udall & a National Park Service notice commemorating the “Oak Grove Butterfield Stage Station, California” – “Located in San Diego . . .on State Highway 79, the site has been marked by the State of California. It is in private ownership;” letters (Nov.- Dec. 1961) re/ responses to constituent Dr. V. J. Wyborney’s acclamation of Zion National Park’s scenery and new headquarters building, but criticism of what appeared to be a politically partisan statement. His error was corrected by the reply from the National Park Service.
