Post Office, 1963-1964
Scope and Contents
A large collection of letters, periodical reprints, notices, telephone messages, office notes, memorandum, telegrams, memos, news clippings, government document, petitions & postal cards. Examples are: letters (Nov. – Dec. 1963) re/ P.O. Dept. response to inquiry from Wilson “concerning the status of the proposed new post office for San Diego, California;” letters (Jan.- Mar. 1964) from John B. Robb (President, Skyway Metal Processing, Inc.), Wilson & Joseph P. Doherty (Executive Asst. to the Asst. Postmaster General) re/ inquiry pertaining to cleaning and reconditioning mail drop boxes before repainting; letters (12/63 - 1/64) & promotional brochure – “Newest Member of the Beckman Team, Sharp Laboratories Specialize in Research and Engineering” re/ information on Sharp Laboratories in La Jolla; letters (Nov.-Feb. 1963) re/ inquiries from Paderewski, Dean & Associates as to new Post Office Building scheduled for San Diego; office note (1/21/64) & copy of “Simplified Address Mail Under Congressional Frank;” a letter (1/24/64) from Edward M. Richardson (President, United Federation of Postal Clerks, Local 197) & Wilson’s reply (2/10/64) re/ “I have taken a number of steps to urge favorable consideration of our request that present plans to discontinue postal railway service be cancelled” – Mr. Richardson’s letter tellingly lists the problems with converting to truck transport for mail as opposed to keeping railway transport. Wilson agreed; letters (3/64) re/ response to Coronado constituent complaint about mail delivery delays; stapled packet containing letters (Jan - July 1963), telephone message (8/16/63) & “Exhibits” re/ Mrs. Frankie G. Frazee’s case for re-instatement with backpay, as to overtime work & other issues; letters (Jan.-Feb. 1963) re/ potential mail fraud being practiced by a health and life insurance company; stapled packet containing letters, telegram & statements (1964) re/ the proposed discontinuance of postal transportation on the Sante Fe Railroad between Los Angeles and San Diego was supported by William J. Hartigan (Asst. Postmaster General, Bureau of Transportation and International Services). This so-called cost cutting and alleged more efficient decision using trucks is contradicted by the extensive material in this stapled packet; a letter (5/3/61) from El Cajon constituents Mr. & Mrs. Gregory & Wilson’s reply (5/12/64) re/ an appeal to retain Santa Fe trains to San Diego on present schedules & the company’s claim that revenue losses dictated such a reduction; other topics and concerns in the remainder of this folder are: concern about removing the Miramar Road area from the La Jolla Post Office; Congressman James Utt is fighting a reduction in the Santa Fe train schedule; letter to President Johnson opposing cutback in service of San Fe Railway to San Diego; a packet of material opposing cut back of train service to San Diego; a constituent is “burned up about the mail service;” another constituent complains about closing Post Offices on Saturday and Sunday and at 5 p.m. on weekdays; an Imperial Beach constituent protests against cut-backs in postal service; letters & telegram re/ El Cajon constituents lost bid for transportation of mail; constituent proposes taking money from foreign aid to support Post Office expenses; frustration of constituent as to present “freeze” on Post Office employment; letters & news clipping re/ politics, GOP Revitalization & comment on alleged “drumming up money among postmasters for the Kennedy library;” packet of letters & petition opposing dissemination of mail from Russia; Fr. Charles Dollen (Library Dir. University of San Diego) complains about mail service; request to Wilson by constituent in application for postmastership at Bonita, CA; a Lincoln High School participant in the American Legion’s Girls State Program recommends issuance of commemorative stamp honoring this program; Sweetwater Valley Civic Assoc. supports keeping the Bonita post office independent with its own postmaster and home delivery; anti-U.N. propaganda from a constituent & Post Office Dept. clarification; letters & petition to Postmaster General demanding restoring Contract Station No. 5, to its former address, 3733 El Cajon Blvd.; a 2 page copy of Public Law 88-325 88th Cong. H. J. Res. 1056; letters regarding public toilets in post offices and other locations; more letters & petitions related to Contract Post Office No. 5; responses to complaints from constituent about service at main post office; letters (June-Sept. 1964) re/ complaints that the Post Office had classified the Christian Beacon from 2nd class to 3rd class; Chula Vista resident with extensive Navy background seeks Wilson’s assistance in being appointed the Bonita Postmaster; P.O. Dept. response to complaints from Republican Congressmen regarding a Democratic Congressman using his mail franking to congratulate a new citizen and push the Democratic Party at the same time; request by negotiator for Letter Carriers Union to Wilson to send him publications concerning postal laws and practices and the Personnel Handbook, Series P-7; letters re/ new post office for Kearney Mesa; more information on why the central post office closes in the evening; complaints against the Theater Arts Magazine; a Patent Attorney on the 7th floor of the Bank of America Building is concerned about not receiving morning mail; PFC overseas in Europe is not receiving packages mailed by his parents; responses to complaints from constituent concerning the purchase of postage stamps with plate numbers.
