Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, telegrams, notes, news releases, memos & petitions. These are not filed in an exact chronological order. Examples are: a letter (2/13/53) from Tom C. Cargill (Acting Asst. Postmaster General) & Congressman Wilson’s reply (2/17/53) re/ “The appointment of a rural carrier will be necessary at . . . [the Lakeside, California] post office;” a letter (4/27/53) from constituent Mrs. C. Rupert Lindley & Wilson’s reply (5/5/53) re/ Mrs. Linley recommended Mr. James B. Watts for the position of rural mail carrier in Lakeside; a letter (7/30/53) from constituent Walter Hartung & Wilson’s reply (8/6/53) re/ Mr. Hartung recommended Fred Dreher for the position of rural carrier for Lakeside; five Western Union telegrams (12/22 & 12/23/53) – four from Wilson & one from Philip L. Ferris (Lakeside) re/ appointment of James B. Watt as rural mail carrier as “highly satisfactory to both community and department;” a letter (11/24/53) from N. R. Abrams (Assist. Postmaster General, Bureau of Post Office Operations) & Wilson’s reply (12/23/53) re/ a list of 3 names for rural carrier with Watts at the top with military preference & Wilson’s reply that he would “appreciate your appointing Mr. James Burton Woods at Lakeside, California;” a note “From the desk of Philip L. Ferris” (6/13/54) re/ “Bob: It appears you have really made a friend in Winston Oaks, Lakeside Postmaster;” a letter (6/13/54) from Philip L. Ferris to Wilson re/ “As you may have learned, Mr. Watts, whom you recently appointed Rural Mail Carrier in Lakeside, has resigned and there is now a vacancy for his position.” Since Frederick W. Dreher was 2nd on the list and approved by Lakeside Postmaster Oaks and other residents, Ferris recommended his appointment; letters (6/54) from N. R. Abrams (Assist. Postmaster General) & Congressman James B. Utt re/ resignation of Mr. Watts and reminder to Abrams that Lakeside was in Congressman Wilson’s 30th District; letters (June-July 1954) from Wilson & Assist. Postmaster General Abrams re/ potential acceptance of the appointment of Frederick Dreher as temporary rural mail carrier at Lakeside: a letter (12/9/54) from O. H. Fuller (Regional Operations Manager, Post Office Dept., San Francisco) to Wilson re/ confirmation that orders have been issued for the appointment of Frederick W. Dreher as rural carrier at Lakeside, December 16, 1954; a letter (9/16/57) from B.B. Barnes to Wilson re/ the removal of Winston S. Oaks as Lakeside Postmaster on October 4, 1957 & request to Wilson for the name of a suitable person to serve as acting postmaster until a regular postmaster can be appointed; a letter (9/15/57) from Frederick W. Dreher to Philip L. Ferris re/ “Due to the resignation of the Postmaster at Lakeside . . . I feel I have every necessary qualifications to fill this job,” as a rural carrier with permanent civil service status and with much previous experience in the private sector, Dreher felt well qualified; “Memo To: Mr. Wilson From: Mr. Terrar - Subject: Louis C. Pinkham” (9/57) re/ Pinkham, a foreman at the Chula Vista Post Office and 17 years there had talked with Ed Terrar about being Postmaster at Lakeside; copies of letters (10/18/57) from E. F. Terrar, Jr. (Admin. Asst. to Wilson) to Harvey Huffman, William Kopel, Raynor DeBurns & Guffrey Shirey re/ “we appreciate the signatures of you and the many friends of Mr. Wallace Cate, recommending him for the position of Postmaster at Lakeside;” copies of six petitions (9/24, 10/1 & 10/4/57) “as patrons of the Lakeside Post Office, [we] hope to see Wallace Reed Cate appointed as Postmaster at Lakeside, California” – Cate had been acting postmaster there; copy of a letter (10/1/57) from E.F. Terrrar, Jr. to Lakeside constituent D.W. Buckel thanking him for his recommendation of Mr. Pinkham of Chula Vista as Postmaster for Lakeside; a series of nine letters (10/3 to 10/22/57) from Mr. Terrar to various Lakeside and other area residents indicating appreciation of their recommendation of Wallace Cate for the position of Postmaster at Lakeside & finally by 10/18 indicating that “We are happy to make this appointment;” telegram & letters (10/57) re/ information leading to the appointment of Mr. Cate as postmaster; letters (Feb.-Apr. 1958) re/ Post Office responses to Eucalyptus Hills Landowners Assn.’s concerns about losing their rural mail delivery and their agricultural zoning; telegram & letter 7/3 & 8/1/58) re/ Wallace R. Cate’s permanent postmaster confirmation by the U.S. Senate; letters (May-July 1958) re/ Wilson helps rural ranches on a private road receive mail at their homes; letter (1/30/59) re/ the Post Office Bureau of Operations informs Wilson on the advisability of converting two of three rural routes in Lakeside to city carrier routes; letters (Feb. & Mar. 1959) re/ S.F. Regional Office informs Wilson “that we plan to establish city delivery service at Lakeside;” letters (8/59) re/ Postmaster Cate & Wilson correspond as to a Lowell Drake’s problem of mailing parcels in Lakeside; letters & news releases (May & July 1962) re/ “competitive bids to build and lease the new post office at Lakeside;” letters (Mar.-Apr. 1963) re/ inquiry in behalf of Leland K. Connor, moving from Warwick, Rhode Island to Lakeside, California and seeking a Post Office employment transfer from Warwick to Lakeside; letters (July-Nov. 1963) re/ opening of new Lakeside Post Office, ceremony date and the request for a flag from Wilson.
