Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, office notes, a map & a news release. Examples are: letters & attached map (2/58) from Wilson & Verne Scoggins (P.O. Regional Operations Dir., San Francisco) re/ a map of a proposed new post office building as submitted by Mr. H. O. Parks (President, Travelers Motel Corporation) for Nestor – Scroggins returned the map to Wilson indicating the department had no plans at this time for Nestor; letters (May-July 1958) from Sam M. Edwards (Mgr.-Owner, Singing Hills Mobile Rancho, Nestor) & Wilson re/ concern over the potential loss of the Nestor postmark, since Nestor was now a branch of the post office zone of San Diego; letters (July & Aug. 1958) from Verne Scroggins (P.O. Regional Operations Dir., San Francisco) & Wilson re/ “There are no plans under consideration for discontinuing or changing” the Nestor post office in San Diego County; letters (Jan.-Mar. 1960) from Nestor constituent Mrs. Franklin A. Berry, Wilson & Verne Scroggins (Regional Operations Dir, S.F.) re/ proposed plan by a Nestor property owner & developer Mr. Egger to build a new post office & Scroggins’ reference to P.O. survey of area that recommended a building with 2,100 square feet; copy of a letter (3/23/60) from Wilson to Robert Fahs (Asst. to the Regional Dir, S.F.) re/ reference to S.D. City resolution (1958) requesting a change in postal service to South Bay area & comment on recent survey of Nestor area showing need for a new post office building; letters (12/61 & 1/62) from South San Diego Council, Inc., Wilson & Frederick C. Belen (Asst. Postmaster General) re/ a plea for the retention of the Nestor postmark (first established in 1890), house to house mail delivery and “It is our unanimous desire to have the name ‘Imperial Beach’ stricken from our addresses, as this condition seriously confuses our lives from a business, social and economic standpoint;” a letter & a P.O. News Release (6/19/62) re/ the Department was asking for bids to build and rent to the Dept. a new post office for Nestor – the new 1,200 building would “replace the existing 288 square foot quarters in Nestor;” a letter (3/19/62) from Frederick C. Belen (Asst. Postmaster General) to Wilson re/ “Miss Joyce Sibley was appointed acting postmaster at Nestor, California, March 16, 1962).
