Scope and Contents
A large collection of letters, petitions & news clippings. Examples are: a letter (12/17/60) from Mrs. William F. Walker (Executive Secretary, Council of Chamber of Commerce and Civic Clubs & Wilson’s reply (1/3/61) re/ general discussion concerning the loss of the Post Office in the Old Town area and a Council vote favors the re-establishment of this Post Office, Wilson indicated Postmaster Earl Roberts has recommended a contract post office for Old Town; news clipping from the Evening Tribune (12/9/60, a-18) re/ “Mail Defends Post Office In Old Town” – “Wilson’s aids said petitions bearing about 2000 signatures have arrived from San Diego within the last two weeks; a collection of petitions as follows -- “98 signatures;” “274 signatures Petition October 8, 1960;” a bundle of more petitions – some undated; “Petition Opposing the Removal of the Old San Diego Post Office from the Old San Diego Area – 46 Signatures . . . October 10, 1960;” letters (11/22 & 12/4/60) from Acting Postmaster V. Earl Roberts & Mrs. Wm J. Hoffman re/ discussion of opening of new facility at 3430 Midway and difficulties in reaching it with bus service, especially from Claremont area; more copies of petitions from Oct. 1960 & cover letter from Mrs. Frederick E. Bell; a copy of a letter (10/24/60) from Wilson to V. Earl Roberts re/ “Enclosed please find several petitions containing signatures of hundreds of San Diego people who request the Post Office Department retain the Old Town postal facilities;” a letter (10/22/60) from Mrs. Frederick E. Bell, enclosed petitions & Miss Margaret M. Young’s reply for Wilson (10/27/60) re/ “an additional 177 signatures . . . . makes a total of 2,001 signatures to retain the OLD SAN DIEGO post office sub-station. All members of our family and all our friends are solidly backing you and Mr. Nixon. Do not worry;” a letter (10/7/60) from Mr. & Mrs. James & Christine Burkhardt & attached news clipping “Old Town Post Office Scheduled To Be Closed,” The San Diego Union (10/7/60) re/ “That nice oldfashioned looking post office ought to stay there as it is . . . . The Midway area is a busy one . . . the traffic is bad, why a post office there?;” a packet of letters (10/60) from Old San Diego Chamber of Commerce, The City of San Diego, C.F. Von Gunden General Contractor, Dixieline Lumber Co., San Diego Grocers Assn., Travel Lodge, Fremont-Kearny Historians of Old San Diego & five others – all supporting the retention of the post office at Old Town; a 4 page letter (11/23/60) from Acting Postmaster V. Earl Robert to Wilson re/ petitions received, coverage of financial information on the “Old San Diego Station” & commentary on the new Midway station; six letters from various businesses and constituents, Wilson’s replies & a news clipping (Oct.-Nov. 1960) re/ Old Town Station and political commentary.
