A collection of letters, telegrams & petitions. These are filed in reverse chronological order. Examples are: a letter (7/10/61) from Postmaster Burnice C. Wellband to Wilson re/ “Congratulations on your becoming Chairman of the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee;” a letter (4/24/61) from Raymond R. Holmquist (Post Office Dept., Regional Dir., San Francisco) re/ “I am enclosing a copy of a news release concerning the Pine Valley Post Office” – it was not attached to this letter; a letter (6/21/55) from Burnice C. Wellband (Pine Valley) to Congressman Wilson re/ “I have received my commission as Postmaster of Pine Valley. I am very proud of that document. I wish to thank you for all you did in helping me to get this appointment.;” a telegram (2/5/55) from Wilson to Mrs. Wellband re/ Your name was sent to the Senate yesterday for confirmation as Postmaster of Pine Valley;” a letter (n.d.) from Pine Valley constituent Mrs. Duegusta S. Pratt & Wilson’s reply (12/14/54) re/ congratulations on Wilson’s reelection and other personal commentaries; a letter (11/24/54) from San Diego constituent Charles R. Clough & Wilson Admin. Asst. E. F. Terrar, Jr.’s reply (12/1/54) re/ positive evaluation of Bernice Wellband and other commentary on Pine Valley; a letter (10/29/54) from Pine Valley constituent Mrs. Roy E. Breedlove & Wilson’s reply (11/26/54) re/ petition (not attached) showing “the preference of better than 95% of the residents of Pine Valley” for Mrs. Wellband be made permanent postmaster at Pine Valley – also negative comment by Mrs. Breedlove against Mrs. Pratt as a potential for the office; 3 pages (11/10/54) showing 59 names of Pine Valley registered voters recommending Mrs. Duegusta S. Pratt be appointed as Postmaster of Pine Valley; a letter (11/10/54) from N. R. Abrams (Asst. Postmaster General) & Wilson’s reply (11/16/54) re/ a list of the top 3 eligible for Pine Valley postmaster with Acting Postmaster Burnice Wellband at the top – Wilson chose Mrs. Wellband; a copy of a letter (11/15/54) from Wilson to Wellband re/ “you are number one on the list of eligibles . . . . In concurrence with the Republican Central Committee of San Diego County, I have recommended . . . you be appointed . . . permanent postmaster at Pine Valley;” letters (Sept.& Oct. 1954) from Republicans Mary Kerns & George Daley & Wilson’s reply re/ favorable commentaries for Mrs. Wellband & negative view on Mrs. Pratt; letters (Sept. & Oct. 1954) re/ recommendation for Pine Valley resident Mrs. Ruth Christian Mullins as postmaster; a letter (8/12/54) from Pine Valley constituent Henry C. Morgan & Wilson’s reply (8/17/54) re/ Mr.Morgan’s “STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL” commentaries as “a life-long Republican” on “the affairs of the valley [that] are tightly in the hands of several New Deal, Truman, Roosevelt Democrats;” There are many more letters dated from June to Sept. in this folder, as well as telegrams & news clippings, that continue to address the issue of postmaster, petitions & the candidates, especially Mrs. Pratt vs. Mrs. Wellband – both stalwart Republicans; a letter (5/19/54) from Arizona Governor Howard Pyle & Wilson’s reply (5/23/54) re/ the Governor’s support for an “ardent Republican,” Mrs. Pratt; a letter (5/1/54) from Campo constituent Charles C. L. Haskell & Wilson’s reply (5/11/54) re/ interest in the vacancy for Pine Valley Postmaster; telegram (5/10/54) indicating that Mrs. Wellband would be approved as Acting Postmistress as of May 15; a letter (3/30/54) from Lee Bull (Republican Central Committee of San Diego County), a resume from Pine Valley constituent Mrs. Duegusta S. Pratt & Wilson’s reply (4/9/54) indicating “I am no ‘fair weather’ Republican;” a copy of a March 31, 1954 Post Office Dept. notice of vacancy in Pine Valley; letters & petitions (3/54) from Pine Valley Improvement Club re/ six sheets showing 96 names & cover letters dated Mar. 27, 1954 all supporting postal clerk Mrs. Bernice Wellband fill the position of deceased Postmaster Mrs. Blanche D. Schlegel, killed in an automobile accident on March 17, 1954; 4 letters (4/54) re/ postmaster for Pine Valley, 3 supporting Wellband and 1 supporting Pratt; a letter (10/5/53) from Wilson & a reply (10/19/53) from F.E.C. Allan (Dist. Superintendent, Postal Transportation Service, Dist. No. 5, 8th Div., Los Angeles) re/ a request for advice as to the possibilities of establishing a rural route from Pine Valley east, to take a care of the mail load on Highway 80 – a survey would be conducted; a letter (8/24/53) from Pine Valley constituent Mrs. Don H. Foster & Wilson’s reply (11/16/53) re/ an invite to Wilson to attend a picnic lunch in Pine Valley & meet Mountain Empire Republicans. Letters misfiled in this folder – (2/11/54) Wilson to Charles Ducander (Counsel, Armed Services Committee) re/ “inequity mentioned In paragraph No. 4;” (5/3/54) Laughin E. Waters (U.S. Attorney) to Tom Hutchinson (Chula Vista) re/ “I am informed you have information concerning certain alleged irregularities with recruiting of Mexican labor;” letters (May & June, 1954) from San Diego constituent Clarence Latoure, Captain H.M. Heiser (Acting Chief of Industrial Relations, Dept. of the Navy) & Wilson re/ an employee of the Naval Air Station has complaints as to his experience at North Island and receives suggested grievance procedures.
