Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, a news clipping & a news release. Examples are: a letter (5/14/54) from San Ysidro Postmaster Eugene Cordeau, Jr. & Wilson’s reply (5/25/54) re/ potential activation of Brown Field as a military base and being attached to the San Ysidro post office for mail purposes; a letter (1/24/58) from John F. Smith (Secretary, San Ysidro Lions Club) to Postmaster General Summerfield re/ “the San Diego . . . City Council has recommended that the identity of the San Ysidro Post Office be abolished and that a zone number be given it. We believe there would be many undesireable implications arise from a change in our postal system here. Our Post Office here serves many people on the Mexican side of the border . . . [and] is an old landmark of early development of this section of the country” and for tourists visiting Mexico; a letter (1/24/58) from Henry C. Perkins (Dist. Superintendent and Secretary to the Governing Bd. of the San Ysidro School Dist.) to the Honorable Arthur Summerfield re/ protesting the consolidation of the San Ysidro Post Office with San Diego and assigned a zone number; a letter (1/17/54) from constituent Earl V. Agen, news clipping & Wilson’s reply (2/27/58) re/ criticism from this Republican supporter of Wilson that San Ysidro is protesting the closure of their post office.” Mr. Agin favored consolidation with San Diego; letters (Jan.-Feb. 1958) re/ the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce objects to consolidation with San Diego and forwards a petition bearing the signatures of 684 patrons of the local post office who also object to the consolidation; letter & news release (1/61) re/ “renewal of the lease on the present quarters of the San Ysidro Post Office” which is to remodeled and enlarged to 3,542 sq. ft.; staple packet of letters (Feb.-Mar. 1962) re/ a review of correspondence from the San Ysidro School Dist., and others, opposing consolidation with San Diego and Asst. Postmaster General Belen’s final comment that “we have decided to retain the present status of the San Ysidro post office.”
