Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, postal cards, periodical excerpts, news clippings, bulletins, telegrams & other items. These items are filed from Nov. 1962 through Oct. 1963. Examples are: a letter (11/24/62) from Dennis V. Allen (President Emeritus, San Diego Race Relations Society) & Wilson’s reply 12/4/62) re/ Allen’s resignation from the Society based on the recent election of officers to the organization; postal card from Miss Katherine Nunnelee and Miss Julia Packard & Wilson’s reply re/ an article in the Nov. issue of Readers Digest entitled “The Revolt of the Plain People;” personal health issue from friends of Wilson; constituent Al Innis sends pages 56-57 from Jan. 7, 1963 issue U.S. News & World Report to Wilson re/ “U.S. Fighting Men In 41 Lands” – Mr. Innes questions much of the U.S. commitments abroad & how we got there; telegram and news clipping re/ 50th anniversary of Colonel and Mrs. Harry Watson of El Cajon; personal information on research vessel Argo & former employee John Sherman; response of Wilson and the Library of Congress to inquiry from George W. McNeely (VFW Post 2111) re/ a false belief that there was a public law stating that the U.S. was a Christian nation; letter from Philip del Campo (USAID, American Embassy La Paz, Bolivia) & Wilson’s reply re/ details on NEA Teach Corps in Bolivia; letters (7/63) from Glenn Gibson (The American Beekeeping Federation, Inc.) & Wilson re/ pro-Republican - anti Democrat political discussion; letters (June-July) re/ responses from various government officials and Wilson to the attempt of El Cajon constituent Dr. Donald Shanks to obtain military transportation to Spain to attend the International Congress of Organists as a representative of the United States – he was unsuccessful; letters (7/63) re/ constituent Thomas E. Grom, as a “hot rod” enthusiast, is opposed to several bills before Congress that in his view are un-American; news clipping & letter (7/63) re/ retirement of M. F. Horace V. Kennedy; news clipping and letters (9/63) re/ retirement of Coronado City Planner R. W. Stanton, Sr.; letters (Sept.-Oct. 1963) re/ Wilson & Dept. of Interior help constituent Philip S. Rush obtain a copy of Soldier and Brave; office note & letter (9/63) re/ Wilson hoping to gain another constituent moving to San Diego; letters (9/63) re/ Margaret M. Young (Wilson’s Secretary) assists USD student Marty Martin in getting Republican Party material for a debate regarding party platforms; letters (10/63) re/ La Jollan Republican Christy Thomas calls Wilson’s attention to the Dan Smoot Report for Sept. 30 – “McNamara’s Commissars;” letter & office note (9/63) re/ the request by Wilson to General Eisenhower to autograph a photo of “the two of us taken at the Republican Conference at your farm” was successful; letters & office note (Aug.-Sept. 1963) re/ political comments by Wilson & photographs taken of President Kennedy at the commencement address at San Diego State College are processed by Senator Engle; letters (Sept. – Oct. 1963) re/ celebrative and conservative commentary by Dean John Burdick & Dr. Walter Judd on Dr. Walter Judd’s appearance and panel discussion at Grossmont College on Sept. 25 – “This man Burdick is a real good Republican and I judge he has some opposition from other members of the faculty;” memo and letter (10/63) re/ two Coast Guard League officers wish to attend National Convention in Puerto Rico and seek military transportation; letter (10/15/63) & attached copy of a draft of a new West German Alien Bill that was being challenged because it gave police authorities to much arbitrary power of refugees from East European countries.
