Public Relations: Agricultural Yearbooks, 1961
Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, postal cards & lists of yearbooks. These are not filed consecutively, but do cover January through August. The various requests for topics & years follow the pattern already established in earlier listed folders in this box. Topics such as “SEEDS, FOOD & SOIL” were popular requests in this folder. Selected Examples are: a letter (8/2) from David Vanderford & Wilson’s reply (8/7) re/ an Agricultural major at college, Mr. Vanderford requested & received Yearbooks on Plant Diseases, Animal Diseases, Soil & Seeds; a letter (7/21) from Mrs. Jerry Hewett (Sunnyside Produce, Inc.) & Wilson’s reply (7/26) re/ a request for the Food Yearbook (to be autographed by Wilson) & Mrs. Hewett, an old friend of the family, discusses memories of National City days with Francis Wilson; a letter (7/15) from Miss Dorothy E. Rosenbury & Wilson’s reply (7/26) re/ request for Food Yearbook & conservative commentary on the current political situation, especially, as with Wilson, being opposed to establishing a withholding tax on dividends; a postal card (3/22) & Wilson’s reply (3/30) re/ “Thank you for your recent card requesting a cop of the 1948 Agricultural Yearbook entitled GRASS. I regret that my supply of this yearbook is exhausted;” a letter (2/14) from Miss Effie Denison (Librarian, San Diego Junior College) & Wilson’s reply (2/23) re/ a request for the 1960 Yearbook on Agriculture & also Yearbooks for 1940 & 1942 if available; a Wilson letter ( 2/8) indicated that “With the beginning of the new Congress, our Yearbook requests were somewhat bogged down,” he also commented about a dwindling supply of “Food” yearbooks; on Feb. 13th Wilson indicated that his “supply of the yearbook for 1952 entitled INSECTS is exhausted” & his letter (2/19) indicated that his supply of the 1959 Yearbook “FOOD” was exhausted; a letter (2/23) from La Jolla constituent A. E. Shouse & Wilson’s reply (2/6) re/ request for “GRASS” Yearbook & commentary by Mr. Shouse suggesting that Wilson meet with the Reverend Stuart Innerst of the Friends Committee on National Legislation to discuss “problems involving our government with the present regime in Peiping;” letters (1/17 & 1/26) re/ request for “GRASS” Yearbook & interesting commentary from constituent Ray Scott on supporting Nixon in 1960 & hoping he would become president in 1964; a letter (1/5) from H. Williams, Jr. (J.W. Williams Co.) re/ “received the Yearbook of Agriculture 1954 . . . P.S. Keep up the good work and don’t let the rebels take over the capitol;” a letter (1/4) from Willis H. Fletcher Co. “Dear Bob: Thanks so much for the gift of the two books . . . on grass and on land which [Postmaster] Earl Roberts was so kind to present to me on your behalf. I have just purchased considerable land in the vicinity of Cuyamaca Lake” -- a penciled in note indicated “Are the Fletchers going to build a new city?;” a letter (1/6) from Ramona constituent Wayne C. Cornell & Wilson’s reply (1/17) re/ brief discussion on Yearbooks & Wilson’s supply for the years 1949 through 1953 was exhausted. Both Cornell & Wilson have commentaries on politics, the threat of communism & the need for more “old fashioned flag-waving spirit;” a letter (8/2) from Dean F. Palmer (Agricultural Commissioner, County of San Diego) & Wilson’s reply (8/7) re/ request of Yearbook on “SEEDS;” a letter (8/3) from Carl L. Lutz (Dept. of Geography, SDSC) & Wilson’s reply (8/7) re/ a request for “the 1961 Yearbook of Agriculture, entitled Seeds . . . . You have been so kind as to extend this service to me in the past, and it is a most helpful reference for myself and my students.”
