Public Relations: Agricultural Yearbooks, 1964
Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, postal cards, a news release, Department of Agriculture lists of publications & other items. These are filed from December back to January. As with previous folders on this topic, these contents are primarily focused on requests for various years and titles of the Yearbook. Selected examples are: a letter (rec’d 12/28) from constituent Henry Koehne & Wilson’s reply (12/28) re/ Mr. Koehne’s request for the 1957 Yearbook could not be furnished, since Wilson’s supply of that year was exhausted. They did send a list of other yearbooks available; a letter (12/10) from Albert J. Grennan to Wilson re/ “Thank you for the Yearbook of Agriculture for 1964. As a teacher, these Yearbooks have proven to be valuable reference books for myself and my students. Congratulations on your reelection;” letters & postal cards (Sept.-Nov.) from various constituents requesting Agricultural Yearbooks on such topics as FOOD, POWER TO PRODUCE, CROPS IN PEACE AND WAR, & WATER CONSERVATION; a letter (10/21) from David W. Spurgeon (“a senior at Purdue University in Agriculture, Education and Biology teaching”) & Wilson’s reply (10/28) re/ a request for a complete set of Yearbooks from 1940 to date – Wilson was only able to send 7 books, his supply for the other years was exhausted; a letter (9/16) from La Mesan John F. Anderson (a graduate student in plant pathology at Washington State University) & Wilson’s reply (9/22) re/ a request for an extensive list of topics and years of the Yearbook as well as commentary on political issues, especially foreign students at Washington State, from a pro-Barry Goldwater Republican) and Wilson’s commentary on these issues; a letter (10/5) from Congressman Wilson & a reply (10/7) from F. A. Carfligsch (Chief, Utilization and Inquiries Branch, Dept. of Agriculture) re/ transferring 10,000 copies of the Farmers’ Bulletins from Wilson’s allotment to Congressman Don Clausen; a news release (9/13) from the Dept. of Agriculture re/ the publication of the “608-page 1964 Yearbook of Agriculture, Farmer’s World;” a letter (7/1) from Harold Lewis (Dir. of Information, Dept. of Agriculture) to Congressman Wilson re/ “The allotment this year of 10,000 per Member plus your carryover from last year brings your total credit to 23,695 [Farmers’] bulletins” – attached are listings of topics for these bulletins; letters (July) re/ Lewis Jr. High School Vice Principal W. Marshall requests Yearbooks for 1961, 62, 63, 64 & 65 if available; the remainder of items in this folder continue the type of requests noted above including teachers, librarians & city officials. The topics FOOD & A PLACE TO LIVE were popular requests. See also a Dec. 13, 1963 “Memorandum” from Congressman Bob Dole (1st Dist.
