Public Relations: Agricultural Yearbooks, 1965
Scope and Contents
A large collection of letters, memos, postal cards, memorandum & other items. These are filed from December back to October. They all follow a pattern similar to previous PR Agricultural Yearbook folders except that in this folder there are a number of letters and postal cards addressed to Congressman Lionel Van Deerlin. There is no explanation as to why these are to be found randomly throughout this folder. Although there are requests for other topics and years of publication in the folder, it appears that requests for the 1964 Yearbook entitled CONSUMERS ALL predominates. Examples are: “Memo to those sweet people in the Washington Office From: Marge (12/13) & Wilson’s reply (12/21) re/ Vista resident A. C. Faber phoned to request SEEDS and CONSUMERS ALL Yearbooks, Marge indicated she “did not have the heart to tell him he was in Utt’s district, after calling us long distance. Told me he watched the Boss on television and bragged about how great he was too.” Wilson’s Washington office sent Mr. Faber the copies he requested; a letter (11/12) from John D. Archibald (Instructor, San Diego State College) & Administrative Asst. Edgar M. Gillenwaters’ reply (11/19) re/ the request for the CONSUMERS ALL Yearbook was facilitated; 3 letters (Nov.) to Congressman Van Deerlin requesting CONSUMERS ALL; letters (Nov.) from Dr. E.R. Quortrup (S.D. County Veterinarian), Dr. D. J. Thackrey (County Veterinary Pathologist) & Wilson re/ request for CONSUMERS ALL and personal copy for Dr. Quortrup; letters (12/1 & 12/6) re/ D.C. Collier Junior High teacher Miss Catherine B Wait will receive a copy of CONSUMERS ALL and already has FOOD – “Thank you again in advance for your kindness, I am so proud of your work and pray for your continued health & happiness;” office note, memorandum & letters (Nov.) re/ Cathy to Marge -“Please send us a list of the high schools – with addresses – that are in the 36th Congressional District – we are going to send them a copy of our current yearbook.” The original request for CONSUMERS ALL came from Miss Aina Summerfelt (District Resource Teacher, Home Economics, San Diego City Schools); a letter (12/6) from Deputy Mayor Tom Hom (City of San Diego) & Admin. Asst. Edgar M. Gillenwaters’ reply (12/14) re/ “Dear Bob: Thank you for your recent letter supporting my stand on the City of San Diego’s Washington Representative. Your letter was of great help” – Mr. Hom was sent a copy of CONSUMERS ALL; letter & note (Nov.) re/ “Dear Doc: Under separate cover we have forwarded you two copies of the Department of Agriculture Yearbook, Consumer All” – this was sent to Rear Admiral A. W. McKechnie (Coronado); letters (10/25 & 11/3) re/ constituent Mrs. L. L. Lupton requested LAND 1958, FOOD 1959, SEEDS 1961, AFTER 100 YEARS 1962 & CONSUMES ALL 1965 and was sent all of these; letters (10/13 & 10/26) re/ constituent Harvey C. Weiss requests GRASS -48, PLANT DISEASES -53, SOIL-57 & TREES-49, but only received two, since Wilson’s supply of SOIL & TREES was exhausted; letters (11/3 & 11/10) re/ Miss Margaret W. Ellrick’s comments supporting “Project Head Start” & a request for “Consumers All” was sent to Congressman Van Deerlin, since Miss Ellrick was in Wilson’s district, Van Deerlin “Respectfully Referred” it to Wilson; there are several postal cards & letters in this part of the folder sent to Congressman Van Deerlin and a portion of his newsletter with his photo with two Imperial Beach students – “Top Air Force qualifiers for 1965;” most of the rest of the items in this folder are addressed to Wilson.
