Public Relations: Agricultural Yearbooks, 1965
Scope and Contents
As with previous Yearbook Folders, Folder 13 contains letters, postal cards & office notes; most of whom show requests for the CONSUMERS ALL, 1965 Agricultural Yearbook. This folder also has correspondence related to Congressmen Lionel Van Deerlin and Bob Wilson and the delay and shortage of the 1965 Yearbook. Selected Examples are: a letter (n.d.) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Elizabeth A. Olson & Secretary Margaret M. Young’s reply (10/18) re/ “Dear Sir, I heard recently on the radio that you have available copies of the government publication ‘Consumers All.’ It would be appreciated if my sister, who is also a home owner in this area, and myself could receive copies of this booklet” – “As Congressman Wilson is in San Diego for a few days, I am taking the liberty of acknowledging your letter requesting two copies . . . . We have forwarded you copies of this book, under separate cover, for you and your sister;” letters (9/19 & 10/11) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Bruce Cooley & Margaret M. Young’s reply (10/18) re/ a widow on limited income, Mrs. Cooley noted in her 2nd letter that “A friend of mine – democratic – wrote to L. Van Deerlin – in three days she received letter telling her soon as he got them – she would get one. Yesterday she showed me the book.” Secretary Young’s reply to the request for CONSUMERS ALL indicated that “We have 250 requests for copies of this Yearbook and mailed yours and the other requests on October 12;” postal card & letter (Oct.) re/ Lakeside constituent Mrs. Eric A. Swanson requested CONSUMERS ALL from Congressman Utt, since she was in Wilson’s district, he forwarded the request to Wilson, who responded accordingly by sending a copy to Mrs. Swanson; a letter (10/15) from Kearny High School Senior Donna Jean Zernick requesting CONSUMERS ALL – “We are studying this in school and the teacher suggested we write for this book stating it was free upon request;” a letter (10/11) from Art A. Le Tourneau (Social Science Dept., El Cajon Valley High School) to “The Honorable Lionel Van Deerlin” requesting a copy of CONSUMERS ALL, since he resided in Wilson’s District the letter was forwarded to Congressman Wilson; color photo, picture postal card showing Palm Canyon (9/27) & constituent request for 1965 Yearbook; postal card ((10/4) – rec’d 10/8) from San Diego constituent Thorvald Anderson re/ “Please send me the year book of Agriculture 1965 ‘Consumers All’ . . . P.S. In regard to the labor bill 14B, I hope you will vote to keep the states rights to outlaw the union shop;” a letter (9/30) from Dorothy Van Nice (Document Librarian, San Diego Public Library) requesting a copy of CONSUMERS ALL. “We are in constant need of an extra copy for use by students;” letters (Sept.) re/ requests to Congressman Van Deerlin indicate that his supply of Yearbooks was being outpaced, so he forwarded these to Wilson; a stapled packet containing letters, a postal card & a note (Sept. & Oct.) from a number of persons, all of whom were requesting the CONSUMERS ALL Yearbook; a letter (9/18) from San Diego constituent M. R. Donkgny to Wilson re/ “I have voted for you since you were marching in front of the old Sears store with a broom on your shoulder, too bad we never win big.” The letter requests a copy of CONSUMERS ALL - “another government bit of socialistic trash. Keep up the good fight. We’ll get your brother in there yet to help you;” a letter (9/16) from the Secretary of Agriculture to Wilson re/ “I am pleased to announce that the 1965 Yearbook of Agriculture, Consumers All, will be released publicly Friday afternoon, September 17;” a “Memorandum To Urban Republicans,” (9/20) from Congressman Bob Dole re/ a notice that the 1965 Yearbook was now available to members. “I have perhaps the largest rural district in America, and my requests have been almost double the allotment. Hence, I would appreciate receiving any ‘surplus’ copies of the 1965 Yearbook you may have;” note (9/23) from Arlene to Washington Office – “Since we are having numerous calls about this book, could we have some out here?;” a letter (9/18) from San Diego constituent William Roberts to Wilson re/ “I wonder if you would do a long time registered Republican (36 years) a favor? I understand that a large number (230,000) copies of the Government booklet ‘Consumers All’ have been released to members of Congress for free distribution, so if you could see your way to sending a copy of this booklet to me I would appreciate it very much. This is the first and only request I have made in all my voting years;” a letter (9/21) from James M. Moon (Agricultural Commissioner, County of San Diego) requesting five copies of the CONSUMERS ALL 1965 Yearbook . Of the remaining letters in this folder, most cover the months from Jan.-July and are requests for earlier published Yearbooks and a variety titles.
