Public Relations: Army Navy Game Tickets, 1959
Scope and Contents
A small collection of letters, tickets and other information. Examples are: a copy of “Important Instructions for Members PLEASE READ 1959 . . . Army Football Schedule and Ticket Information;” An envelope which says “Hold in case someone asks for tickets to one of these games” – there were 7 tickets in this envelope; a letter (7/22) from Congressman Seymour Halpern to “Dear Colleague” re/ “I am faced with a demand for tickets which I will be unable to meet without the help and cooperation of my colleagues. I wonder if I could impose upon your kindness and ask that you permit me to purchase such of your allotment of tickets for the Army-Navy game as you may not be using;” note (n.d.) from Congressman George H. Fallon (4th District, Maryland) re/ “Interested securing Army-Navy tickets; will exchange Farmer Bulletins and Agricultural Yearbooks;” letter (6/17) from Congressman William Bates (6th District, Mass.) re/ “Having already received numerous requests for Army-Navy Game Tickets, once again I find it necessary to seek the assistance of other Members in filling these requests;” a letter (7/15) from Captain Slade Cutter (Dir. of Athletics, U.S. Naval Academy) to Wilson re/ “Your honorary membership card in the Naval Academy Athletic Association, Navy’s 1959 football schedule, and a set for forms to be used in applying for tickets are enclosed . . . . you will again be given the privilege of purchasing eight tickets;” letters (8/1 & 8/17) re/ Wilson responds with a thank you to Colonel E. S. Adams, Jr. (Dir. of Athletics, Army Athletic Assn., U.S. Military Academy) for his membership in the Army Athletic Assn., the ticket schedule and indicated he “ intend[ed] taking a personal party to this year’s Army-Navy game” and requested a good viewing spot in the stadium; letters (8/26 & 9/15) re/ a follow up on the previous communication which indicated that the Assn. had made an exception by allowing Wilson eight tickets (they normally allowed Congress members only two preferential seats) and indicated “We will try to place them somewhere around the 20-yard line;” letters (9/8 & 9/9) re/ another request for ArmyNavy tickets if Wilson had any extras; a letter (9/11) from Congressman Samuel N. Friedel (7th Dist., Maryland) & Wilson’s reply (9/15) re/ “Because my district in Baltimore is so close to the Naval Academy, I have already received more than one hundred requests for tickets to the Army-Navy Football Game. Once more I find it necessary to ask my friends in the House to help me obtain additional tickets;” a letter (10/2) from Congressman William H. Bates (6th Dist. Mass.) & a reply from Leon W. Parma (Wilson’s Admin. Assist.) re/ a request for extra tickets to which Parma replied that Congressman Wilson was on the West Coast and that Wilson planned to use his tickets for the Army-Navy Game.
