Public Relations: Congressional Directory, 1958-1959
Scope and Contents
An assortment of postal cards & letters requesting Congressional Directories: examples are: a letter (9/11/58) from Percy Anthony & Elmer L. Johnson(President & Vice President, Unit 23 of the National Assn. of Retired and Veteran Railway Workers) re/ information of about increasing annuities for retired RR employees and widows, Congressional actions, receiving “tear sheets from the Congressional Record for August 23rd” & “It just not seem right that Mr. O’Hara (Republican} with his objection could defeat our fair and just request for an increase in our annuities;” a letter (1/14/59) from Arnold Klaus (Asst. Mgr., S.D. Chamber of Commerce) to Wilson requesting a copy of the Congressional Directory for the 68th Congress; a letter (2/5/59) from Lewis E. Holtman (Chief of Business Div., Office of Assessor, County of San Diego) & Wilson’s reply (2/12) re/ request for directory; postal card (2/12) from W. Marco Del Grande (Ex. Sec. S.D. Industrial Development Council, Inc. re/ “Our organization is in need of such a Directory to direct their correspondence to the proper destinations;” postal cards & letter (Jan. & Mar.) re/ Robert J. McPherson request for 1959 directory and his comments about “seawater conversion,” “we support Gen Maxwell Taylor” & anti Soviet views on “stiffening our resistance in Berlin” & “it was Truman’s fault that Eisenhower wasn’t allowed to go into Berlin in the war;” others requesting copies of the Directory are: San Diego Employers Assn., National Steel and Shipbuilding, the American Tunaboat Assn., Miss Elizabeth N. Lee (Librarian, the City of San Diego), Warren C. Heyer (Librarian, S.D. City College) – “for the two branches of the San Diego Junior College Library, we need two copies of the volume for distribution,” Al Wright (Republican Central Committee), 6th grade student Billy Mansfield ( St. John of the Cross school in Lemon Grove) – Wilson’s reply was he only received 25 copies and had already given them away, San Diego Mayor Charles C. Dail – “we are most appreciative of your expediting this request”& a letter (12/19) from John Wilson, Jr. (Alpine), a reply from Marge O’Donnell (12/29) & a note from Marge to Cathy (n.d.) re/ a correction to John Wilson as to not finding a Congressional Directory for the Chamber of Commerce. They had a copy.
