Scope and Contents

Another large folder containing letters, memorandum, newsletters, telegrams, pamphlets, brochures and other items: these are not filed in consecutive chronological order. Selected examples are: letters & newsletter (June) re/ the San Diego Humane Society requests and receives a 50-star flag; memorandum from Cathy to Marge (6/30) re/ a flag for the Employees Assn., U.S. Naval Repair Facility and Naval Station; letters (June) re/ “a fifty star flag that was flown over the Capitol for presentation to the Imperial Beach Shopping Center; “ note (5/31) re/ El Cajon Brownie Troop 539 members sign thank you message to Wilson for the flag and certificate; letters (May & June) re/ a flag for the Conservative Americans Information Center & commentary from constituent Jo Poland that “I am encourage by the terrific swing to the ‘right’ and I think a few more weeks of the ‘THE KENNEDY’S” and we will have it much better. Gov. Brown has not helped the ‘LIBERAL’ movement, in my opinion, and I think we will see a lot more in the way of revolts;” stapled packet of letters (12/30/60-6/5/61) re/ George H. Foster (Save-Co Veterans and Services Department Stores), a Marine Flag Team and Wilson present a 50-star flag to the Hardy Elementary School. Some other groups & organizations are: National Little League Baseball Inc., Collier Junior High School, 306th Tactical Fighter Squadron, National Assn. of Letter Carriers, Kate O. Sessions Park, Omaha Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews Citation Banquet honoring Morris E, Jacobs (5/61), San Diego Horseless Carriage Club, Lakeview Elementary School, flag for the laying of the cornerstone of the new County Court House; Lafayette Elementary School, Peggy & Sidney Starr of Pine Valley, 7th District Camp Fire Girls of Kearney Mesa, Copley Press & the new San Marcos High School, Charles H. Brown & the Town and Country Hotel, Southeast Chamber of Commerce, the Redwood Village Little League, VFW Ship 1774 & games to be played on 5/13/61, Cdr. Robert Scott & family, Mrs. Marguerite M. Mitchell, Taft School & Pacific Beach VFW Post 5985. Additional items in this folder are: letters (May-June) re/ Randolph F. Weidner of Lakeside – flag for his daughter’s birthday & two photos; a flag for the opening of Monte Vista - the 7th Grossmont Union High School (9/61); a stapled packet of letters – many from students – re/ 50- star flag for the W.D. Hall School in El Cajon; letters (6/60-2/61) re/ Mary Sloan (Rm. 10, Montezuma Elementary School) requests and finally receives 50-star flag for her school; letters (1/30 & 2/6) re/ Girl Scouts & personal comments to Wilson from Mrs. Zeluff; letters (Jan.-Feb.) re/ Lakeside’s Lindo Park P.T.A. requests and receives new fifty star flag for “our Principal at our Founder’s Day meeting , on Feb. 14;” letters (May) & “Our Country’s Flag” materials re/ Nathan J. Naiman (Principal, Oak Park Elementary School) requests & receives a flag for presentation at their Flag Day ceremony; letters (Jan.-Feb.) re/ Charles E. Porter (S.D. Chamber of Commerce) & his praise for Wilson’s staff – “we wonder how you folks retain your sanity with the everyday pressure you are exposed to in room 114. Our hats are off to you all;” letters (9/60-1/61) re/ San Diego Indoor Sports’ Club finally receive a flag for their club house; letters & memo (12/60- 1/61) re/Curtis Coleman (Realtors) requests & is sent a flag for his nine year old granddaughter’s Girl Scout Troop 529, Group 2, Los Guas Neighborhood, in the Mt. Helix area; letters & memorandum (11/60-1/61) & a copy of “Dedication of the New Post Office” – Wall St. at Ivanhoe Ave., La Jolla – 11/5/60 re/ flag, personal commentary & politics; letters (11/60-1/61) re/ Lakeside Farms P.T.A. obtains flag and certificate; letters (10/60-1/61) re/ Kearney Mesa V.F.W. Post 3788 helps the Linda Vista Holy Family School obtain a new American Flag; letters (11/60-1/61) re/ the Athenaeum of the Library Association of La Jolla & the Daughters of the American Revolution obtain the new flag; note & letter (12/60) re/ Breitbard Athletic Foundation, Hall of Champions luncheon and autographed golf ball from President Eisenhower; letters (2/61) re/ the YWCA in San Diego – “Dear Sir: Last January (1960) when you presented the YWCA with a 49 Star Flag you said that if we would remind you – you would replace it with a 50 star flag. After one year of flying over the YWCA the 49er is all tattered and torn. Now, may we request another flag?” Wilson complied; memorandum & letters (Oct.-Nov. ‘61) re/ flag and certificate for Mar Vista Junior High School in Nestor; letters (Jan.-Feb. ’61) re/ the El Capitan High School P.T.A. helps the school obtain a flag flown over the Capitol; letters (12/60-2/61) re/ flag for the Mission Bay Republican Women’s Club; letters (11/60-2/61) re/ the Chula Vista American Legion Auxiliary Post 434 obtains flags for the South Bay Retarded Children’s School and the South Bay Community Hospital; letters (Oct.) re/ a fifty star flag for Brownie Scout Troop 872 of El Cajon; letters (July-Oct. ’61) re/ flag and certificate for the Bible History Class of the First Presbyterian Church of San Diego; letters (Oct. ’61) re/ flag flown over the Capitol for Davidson Hall, Armed Forces Building, YMCA; memorandum, letters & office note (Sept.-Oct.) re/ flag for Mr. M. A. Bradbury & his reply - “Dear Marge and Jack: I have just received a flag from the Honorable Bob Wilson . . . . Casey and I used the two recipes from the Cook Books you so kindly sent us and they were a huge success” - M.A. Bradbury (General Mgr., Kauai SurfKauai Inn); letters (Sept.-Oct.) re/ flag for Mary V. Beyer Navy Wives Club #96; letters (Sept.- Oct.) re/ flag & certificate for Alice Birney Elementary School’s “Our American Heritage” as presented by the P.T.A. & the sixth grade; letters & notes (Aug.-Sept. ’61) re/ San Diego constituent Jack Manion obtains flags for several people and one for a ceremony at the St. James’ Academy in Del Mar; a letter (9/25/61) from Wilson to Harry Foster re/ “Just a note to thank you for providing the flag I recently presented to Arthur Godfrey. It was quite an experience for me, and I hope the American Legion and the City of San Diego were satisfied with the publicity they received from it.”
