Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, telegrams, memos, office notes & news clippings. As with previous folders on this topic, they indicate requests for flags & subsequent responses. These are filed from 1957 back to 1953, but not in exact order. Selected examples are: stapled packet of letters & Evening Tribune news clipping (Jan.-Mar, 1957) re/ Harry D. Hall (Southeastern Chamber of Commerce) requests a flag, Wilson complies and also see comments about honoring Police Officer James J. Washington, Jr. (Carnegie Medal “for fiery rescue”) and Hall’s political comments; letters & notes (Nov.-June, 1956) re/ flags for San Diego YMCA & YWCA, San Diego Chapter of the Disabled Officers Assn. , San Diego Children’s Hospital & Richard A. Grihalva’s birthday; letters (May-June, 1956) from Larry Howard Keck (Lincoln High School Alumnus), Wilson & others / a flag flown over the Capitol was requested & then received at Lincoln High School in time for their student nominating convention – “Our Convention was a success;” letters & telegram (5/56) re/ flag flown over the Capitol for the Indoor Sports Club, the Dulzura Club Scout Pack, the San Diego City Rescue Mission & the Bonham Brothers Boys’ Band; letters (4/56) re/ flag for the opening of the Imperial Beach & Palm City Post Office & personal commentary by Miss Margaret (Stubby) Ryan & Wilson; letters (3/56) re/ flags for Jean Frederic Loba Unit 434 of the American Legion, Mrs. Alger B. Newman (Daughters of 1812 Assn. & politics), & for the swearing in of Mrs. Faye Hartman as the Director of the Federal Housing Administration in San Diego; letters & news clipping (2/56) re/ flags for the new Federal Courtroom in San Diego, the Coronado Youth Camp (as requested by the Kiwanis Club of Coronado), Girl Scout Troops # 104 & # 1099 (as requested by the local chapter of the D.A.R.) & flag for the new San Diego County Grand Jury Courtroom; letters (10/55-1/56) re/ Mrs. Mildred H. Sandkop requests flag for the Linda Vista Presbyterian Church and also notes clothing supply problems her Air Force son stationed in England was having; letters (11/55-1/56) re/ Chula Vista American Legion Post 434 requests and receives a flag flown over the Capitol to donate to the new Lauderback School auditorium; letters & telegram (11/55-1/56) re/ more information on the dedication of San Diego’s second Federal Courtroom & the outstanding cooperation of the San Diego Bar Assn., especially in the passage of legislation that created a second Federal judgeship for San Diego County; a letter (8/1/55) from Wilson re/ “Dear Stubby: Your Idea on the flag pole got us a good squib in the newspaper, and we are sending the flag;” letters (7/55) re/ flag for presentation at the dedication of new Jewish Home for the aged in San Diego as requested by the Jewish War Veterans of the United States – Post 185; letters for 1954: flags for El Cajon Elks Lodge 1812; VFW Silver Strand Post 5477, O.K. Ingram Ship #1774 & Post # 4630; The Women’s Civic League; Scoutmaster Dick Faris & Mitch Angus (San Diego Convention and Tourist Bureau); letters & news clipping for 1953: Wilson letter (8/4) to Adam Castillo (President, Mission Indian Federation of Southern California) re/ presentation of flag flown over the Capitol to the federation; letter & news clipping photo (7/17) re/ observance of American Legion Post 6’s 36th birthday; letters (6/17 & 6/29) re/ flag for American Legion Fighting Bob Evans Post #364; letters & note (5/16-19 & 6/15) re/ flag for American Legion Jean Frederic Loba Post 434.
