Public Relations: Inauguration, 1953, 1956-1965
Scope and Contents
A collection of official programs, inaugural information, memorandum, letters, office notes and telegrams: these are filed from 1965 back to 1953 and acknowledge President Johnson and President Eisenhower. 1965-1964: a 48-page “Official Inaugural Program January 20, 1965,” with colored photos and information; letters (1/5/ & 1/16/65) from Wilson to Dale Miller (Chairman, Inauguration Committee) & his reply re/ add Mr. Charles Keely of Buenas Aires, Argentina to a list for invitation to the Inauguration; several letters (1/65) re/ similar information from individuals as to inauguration invitation and a personal message to Wilson from James M. Hall as to Wilson’s warm hospitality; Special Announcement Cards, a letter (12/16/64), a news release & a fact sheet re/ information for obtaining official programs and books related to the Inauguration of President Johnson; letters (12/24/64 & 1/5/65) re/ Wilson receives two complimentary tickets for the Inaugural Parade from Chairman Dale Miller; a letter (12/3/64) from Wilson to Dale Miller re/ a one page list of names to whom official invitations should be sent; letters & memorandum (11/64) re/ Wilson’s 3 page list of names to whom official invitation should be sent; 1957-1956: a letter (6/24/57) from Kenneth A. Johns (R. Victor Venberg Company, San Diego) to Wilson re/ “I received the inaugural medal in the morning’s mail;” a letter (1/21/57) from Mrs. Lucille M. Hankins (San Diego Lodge No. 168, B.P.O. Elks) & Wilson’s reply re/ a request for a copy of the “Official Program, 43rd Inauguration 1957;” a copy of a letter (1/18/57) from Wilson to the Sergeant of Arms (House of Representatives) re/ “Please give my Inaugural tickets, including two step tickets, to Miss Margaret Young;” letters (1/57) re/ Wilson thanks Mrs. Gladys J. Dickson (President, Republican Womens’ Club of National City for sending him a copy of her letter to Robert V. Fleming, Chairman of the Inaugural Committee; letters (1/2 & 1/10/57) re/ Wilson thanks Mrs. W. Randolph Burgess (Chairman, Embassy Hospitality Committee, Inaugural Committee 1957 “advising me of the availability of invitations to visit foreign embassies January 19 through January 20. I will have nineteen female constituents here for the Inauguration;” a letter (1/14/57) from Wilson re/ “We are still getting requests for souvenir invitations . . . .” A list of names is attached; a letter (1/7/57) from Congressman Styles Bridges re/ “The Citizens Inaugural Committee has reserved one set of 1957 special inaugural license tags for each Senator and Representative in the 85th Congress as well as the elective officers of the respective bodies, for their personal use upon request;” letters (1/7/57 & 9/11/56) re/ a request for Inaugural tickets that Wilson’s was unable to fulfill & a list of names for Inaugural Activities – Ball, Ceremony & Parade; a telegram (1/5/57) from Wilson to John Cotton re/ “are you interested in Inaugural Ball Tickets for Monday, January 21;” a Wilson letter (1/4/57) to Clarence Adamy (Inaugural Committee) “Please send invitations to Inaugural Ball” to Mr. & Mrs. John Cotton, Mrs. Murial Tolle & Colonel and Mrs. Irving Salomon; a copy of a Wilson letter (1/4/57); a letter (1/7/57) to All Senators and Congressmen and six brochures entitled “43rd Inauguration 1957;” a letter (12/29/56) from Julie Kirlin (Assistant to Chairman) re/ acknowledging that they had added the names of six people to Wilson’s list of invitations & a similar letter (12/18) adding 2 people; an 8-page, legal size, message (12/19/56) entitled “Inaugural Committee 1957”; a page of Inauguration Information regarding tickets, medals, photographs, housing, distinguished guests, embassy tour, festival & concert; a four page list (no date) from Leonard Hall Chairman entitled “Important The Attached Memorandum Contains Inaugural Information To You;” office note & letter (no date) re/ personal comments to Wilson; four telegrams (12/5 & 11/30/56) from Wilson re/ more information on Inauguration Parade and El Cajon Band participation; a four page list entitled “Liaison Officers – State, General Liaison & Parade Liaison;” “Memo To: Loie From: Bob Wilson Date: December 28, 1956 I would appreciate your having sent to the enclosed list of names honorary invitations to the Inauguration, if possible. Thanks;” a letter (12/20/56) from Lewis T. Breuninger (Executive ViceChairman, Inaugural Committee 1957) To All Members of the United States House of Representatives re/ the committee would engrave and send out a very limited number of beautiful honorary invitations to the Inauguration as souvenirs; a letter (12/11/56) from the Republican Central Committee of California to All Prospective Attendants at the Inaugural of President Eisenhower and Vice President Nixon re/ details on travel, accommodation, etc.; letters (12/6 & 11/21/56) re/ information on Inaugural Parade and the participation of the El Cajon Band; letters (11/27 & 11/21/56) re/ Thomas G. Walters (Operations Director, GEC/AFLCIO) would appreciate two tickets for the Inaugural Ceremonies of President Eisenhower, but Wilson was not yet sure how many tickets each member of Congress would receive; 1953: a copy of a letter (12/22/53) from McIntyre Faries to Mrs. Mary Jane Downing (Republican National Committee) re/ Special Memorandum from Whitlock Sent About December 15th and Concerning Inaugural Arrangements;” copies of legal-sized pages entitled “California – Exhibit ‘A’ through Exhibit ‘D,’ “ January 18-20, 1953 re/ details about numbers attending, such as the Governor, various members of national committees, state finance chairman, etc. & listing of names.
