A collection of letters, office notes, memorandum, memos &telegrams. These are filed from January to December. Examples for Jan. – Mar. are: letters (1/9 & 1/19) re/ Wilson requests San Diego Telephone Directories from District Manager C. L. Adams (The Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company) & is “impressed with your beautiful cover for this year;” a single page letter (1/17) from Wilson to the Secretary of the Navy William B. Franks re/ praise for the Secretary, S.D. “a solid Navy community” & Wilson’s 3rd great uncle was a Secretary of the Navy under Benjamin Harrison; a letter (1/26) from Congressman Robert G. Stephens, Jr. to Wilson re/ thanking Wilson for obtaining a photograph of the swearing-in ceremonies of the 87th Congress; letters (1/17 & 4/5) re/ praise from Wilson for the tenure of Fred A. Seaton as Secretary of the Interior; a letter (rec’d 2/28) from Mrs. Elwood G. Merrill, Jr. re/ “Elwood was delighted with the beautiful plant you sent him in January after his accident;” single letter (3/7) from K. C. Stone (President, Kinetics Corp.) re/ “I am glad you are enjoying the Griffin tie pin. We asked the San Diego Zoo to Zoo to locate a live one for us which can be used as a company mascot;” April - May – telegram (4/5) from Wilson to Billy Casper re/ “We are pulling for you to win this one for the glory of Bonita;” letter (4/7) from Wilson to Paul J. Hartley re/ Wilson becoming a member of the “Wind & Breeze Institute of Applied Seamanship;” over two dozen single page copies of Wilson’s “Dear Colleague” letter (5/12) re/ “By now you probably have learned to appreciate the thoughts embodied in Lincoln’s statement on ‘Duty;’” 19 single page copies of letters (May) sent to Wilson by his Congressional colleagues thanking for the Lincoln statement on “Duty;” June-Aug. – announcement card & letter (5/15 & 6/5) re/ John J. Allen, Jr., former member of Congress & Under Secretary of Commerce for transportation “having resigned from his office has this day resumed membership in . . . Allen, Poggi & Hoffman; letters (7/8 & 17) re/ introducing Tom Klitgaard as a new clerk for Justice Douglas & “I was delighted to see you mentioned as a possible chairman of the House Campaign Committee ;” a letter (7/10) from Jerry Lee Pecht (Advertising and Public Relations) to Wilson re/ barbecue yesterday and newsy gossip; letters (7/27 & 8/3) re/ Wilson loses constituent Jack W. Barnett because of job transfer to Los Angeles; stapled packet containing letters (Aug.) & 4 page letter (7/5) from Matthew H. Jonas to Congressman Rousselot re/ Jonas’ book The Hooded Underworld and other fears of a conspiracy to undermine his version of the U.S. Jonas’ remarks are a perfect example of what Richard Hofstadter referred to in his book The Paranoid Style in American Politics;
