Scope and Contents

This is a collection of letters, office notes, news clippings, several b&w photographs & a periodical excerpt. These are filed from 1953-1965, but the preponderance of these items is from 1960-1965. Examples are: a letter (12/23/53) from Richard Nixon (Office of the Vice President) to Wilson re/ “a note to tell you how very much Mrs. Nixon and I appreciated your coming to the airport to meet us when we returned from our trip abroad;” letters (6/1 & 6/2/54) from Earle D. Chesney (Assistant, The White House) & an enclosed copy of “the President’s letter to Mr. Schrack regarding the photographs of the portraits you so kindly transmitted to us;” 3 more letters (7/12, 24 & 31/56) from Vice President Richard Nixon to “Dear Bob” re/ “how much Pat and I appreciate your taking the time and trouble to welcome us home at the airport yesterday,” “Dear Bob: You have always been one of those who was there with the ‘mostest’ when it really counted,” and “Dear Bob: I appreciate your fine gesture of confidence and loyalty in joining in last Saturday’s statement on my behalf;” letters (12/56) from Vice President Nixon & Mrs. John R. Lynch “Icy” (Chula Vista) re/ lots of “Personal” information, especially genealogical, & the publications of Professor Raymond M. Bell; news clipping – Arthur Ribbel, “K Visit Helps, Says Morton, 500 Hear GOP Chief at Luncheon,” Tribune, 9-23-59, a3 with text & photo of Senator Morton (R-Ky) and Congressman & Mrs. Wilson; telephone message from James E. Cheneweth (Superintendent, Valley View Sanitarium, National City) & Wilson’ reply (12/7/59) re/ providing an autographed picture to Wilson; three letters & Wilson’s replies (I/60 & 2/60) to El Cajon constituents Miss Diana Upah, DeEtta Clark & Karen Kallusch re/ information on the Constitution and an autographed picture of Wilson; four letters & Wilson’s replies (2/60) from San Diego constituents Steve Williams, Ray Booth, Kathy Bailey & Tony Berardini re/ requests for photographs, Constitution booklets, etc.; a letter (2/10/60) from Roy Archibald (Legislative Consultant, National Education Assn.) & Wilson’s reply (2/12/60) re/ “I am happy to enclose eight by 10 glossy print for possible future use in the Journal of the California Teachers Association;” nine letters (2/60) & Wilson’s replies (2/60) from Lemon Grove eighth grade students at St. John’s of the Cross school - Richard Hodges, William Wilder, Wanda Moranville, Frances M. Fitzpatrick, Michael Treinen, Penny Bierly, Barbara Zakulec, Patricia Hoey & Mary Boltz re/ requests for photographs & booklets for their scrapbook project; four letters (2/60) & Wilson’s replies (2/60) from Spring Valley students John N. Evers, Jacqueline Wilson, Margaret Bauer & Miss Marilyn Bergman re/ requests for booklets and autographed pictures; a letter (4/12/60) from Miss Rosemary Carman (Belleville, Illinois) & Wilson’s reply re/ “I am happy to enclose two autographed pictures;” four letters (Jan.-Oct. 1963) & Wilson’s replies from T. Jeffery Hughes (La Crescenta, CA), Rolf L. Anderson (Oskarshmn 2, Sweden), Roger Harris (Rutland, VT) & Congressman Burt L Talcott (12th Dist. CA) re/ similar requests for portraits and booklets; letters (3/64 & 9/64) re/ Wilson responds to requests from three individuals requesting an autographed photo and biography – only one of these was from a constituent. There were 12 stapled packets of letters for 1965, some examples are: a letter from Texas A & I student James M. Dixon & Wilson’s reply (1/12) re/ “My fiance’ and I are young conservatives here in South Texas . . . . We are glad you are continuing to work for conservatism in the Republican Party. . . . We recently began a collection of photographs of conservatives we feel are doing an exceptional job. We would like very much to have an autographed portrait of you, for our album;” two letters (4/21) from Wilson re/ an appeal for contributions to the National Republican Congressional Committee and sending a copy of the Congressional Almanac Committee’s “beautiful 9 x 12 book called Congress to W.W. Wannamaker, III (Chairman, Fifth Cong. Dist., Lugoff, South Carolina), along with his autographed photo; letters (4/12 & 4/21) re/ Republican National Committee member A. B. Hermann praises Wilson and request an autographed photo; a letter (5/21) from Congressman Howard H. Callaway (3rd Dist., Georgia) re/ “Dear Bob: I would like to have you in my ‘Rogue’s Gallery’ so would appreciate your sending me a picture;” letters (6/21 & 6/29) from Albert Balch (President, Crawford & Conover, Inc., Seattle, WA) & Wilson & an attached photocopy of p. 26 The Seattle Times (1/4) re/ the Balch Display in the Seattle Public Library & Wilson will “comply with your request to supply an autographed photograph for the Balch collection;” letters (7/19 & 7/22) re/ San Diego Postmaster Ralph S. Colonell requests & receives Wilson’s photo to hang in his office; letters (8/5 & 8/9) re/ As Treasurer of the College of William and Mary Young Republicans, Robert W, Beers requests an autographed photograph of Wilson; letters (9/13 & 9/17) re/ Miss Martha James (Secretary, Alabama Republican Party) needs “an 8 x 10 glossy photograph” of Wilson for their Public Relations firm; letters (9/30 & 10/6) re/ R. Doyne Halbritter (Attorney at Law, Preston County Historical Society, Kingwood, West Virginia) requests “an autographed photograph of yourself to include in our collection of ‘Autographed photographs of American Statesman;’” two glossy 8 x 10 unsigned photographs of Congressman Wilson, two 8 x 10 autographed photographs of President Dwight Eisenhower & three 5 x 7 similar photographs of President Eisenhower.
