Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, a thank you card, a photocopy of a government document, a news clipping, an application for federal employment form, a promotional brochure & a resume: these are filed from Jan. to Dec. Examples are: a letter (1/7) from Congressman Charles A. Halleck to Congressman Wilson re/ “I appreciate having your letter recommending Ralph Scalzo for the position of Assistant Journal Clerk, Minority, which was formerly held by the late John Kelly;” note card & letter (1/7) re/ Wilson recommendation for Thomas G. Pownall (Convair) to become a member of the Congressional Country Club; stapled packet of memorandum, letters& office notes (12/59-1/60) re/ recommendation and success of Franklin Barnes of Julian for membership in the State A.S.C. Committee; a letter (1/8) from Mrs. Ethel Friedlander (Personal Division, Republican National Committee) to Wilson re/ his recommendation of “William H. Patterson who is a candidate for appointment as Under Secretary of the Air Force;” office notes & letter (1/25) re/ Wilson’s support for Miss Hodson of San Diego’s application for an exchange student scholarship; letters (Jan.-Mar.) re/ recommendation for Robert E. Andreen to be an investigator for the Department of Labor; letters (Feb.-Mar.) re/ Wilson’s help to friend Les Harvey (Coach at San Diego University) to obtain summer employment “at the Del Mar race meeting this coming summer;” note & letter (3/30) re/ summer job for Mike Trainer with the RNC; thank you card to Wilson (rec’d 6/17) from Evelyn S. Balderman for his help in becoming Dir. of Publicity for Horace Mann, Jr. High; a letter (6/25) from Wilson to C. Arnholdt Smith (U.S. National Bank) re/ recommendation for retiring Congressman Don Jackson – “a close personal friend of Dick Nixon” and an “aggressive exponent of conservative Republicanism and has earned a reputation as one of our leading enemies of the Communist conspiracy in America;” letters (June) re/ Wilson contacts American embassies and consulates in Europe paving the way for his friend and constituent Mrs. Muriel Tolle’s trip abroad and their responses; letters (June) re/ B. F. Coggan (V.P. & S.D. Mgr., Convair) & his plans to retire and seek employment with NASA, the ACA or the DOD; letters (June & July) re/ Leon W. Parma (Wilson’s Admin. Asst.) helps William “Bill” Denton find employment with Bob Haldeman (Nixon for President Campaign Hq.) & Denton’s letter regarding conservative and banking industry reaction to unionization in California; letters, news clipping an photocopy of Public Law 86-209 (National Medal of Science) re/ support for awarding a Legion of Merit Medal to Dr. Lee DeForest (inventor of vacuum tube & pioneer electronic scientist); letters (June-July) re/ recommendations for Mrs. Russell Babcock to the White House Conference on Aging; letters (June-July) re/ “Congratulations on your good fortune in lining up Lee Bull to work with you” as an employee of Eastman Dillon, Union Securities and Company; letters, office note & Application for Federal Employment (May-Aug.) re/ finding summer employment for Georgetown 3rd year law student Fred Cioffi at the Department of Interior & help from the RNC; copy of a July 29, 1960 “To Whom It May Concern” letter from Wilson re/ introducing Lawrence Cushman of San Diego “who is on an extended tour through Europe with a Young Men’s Christian Association group;” letters (8/6 & 8/10) re/ the Falcon Travel Service requests and receives help from Wilson to assist Michael Goodwin, who is now in Europe with his father, Ewart, to attend the Olympic Games – Wilson sent “To Whom It May Concern” letters; “To Whom It May Concern” letter (6/22) from Congressman Thomas E. Morgan (26th Dist., PA) introducing Robert Hodgson and recommending him as a heavy equipment operator – “NOTE: Enclosed original of this letter to Roscoe Hazard On October 25, 1960. The Boss wrote a personal note: ‘This guy is a heavy equipment operator – can you offer him work? Thanks, Bob;’" letters (June-Sept.) re/ Richard G. Capen, Jr. “is highly recommended by the Copley people of San Diego” and is now working “as a Rally Man in the Nixon-Lodge Volunteer group;” letters, note & biographical sketch (Mar.-Sept.) re/ appointment of Lowell Davies as a member of the Advisory Committee on the Arts; letters (Sept.-Oct.) re/ creation of a First Federal Savings and Loan Association branch office in the Broadway-Hale Vista Square shopping area of Chula Vista; letters (Oct.) re/ William F. Johnson of Acadia, CA & his process “to further refine hydraulically mined gold;” letter (12/15) from Wilson re/ “I’ll try to help out on the Nixon invitation, although I’ll tell you frankly it does not look encouraging because he is going out to California about this time;” a large stapled packet containing letters (May-Dec.), news clipping & a resume for Robert A. Moor re/ his application for employment as Historian or Research and Editorial Specialist with Headquarters, Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama; letters (11/3 & 12/29) & brochure from Management Search Enterprises, Santa Ana, CA re/ Wilson recommended that this firm contact the San Diego Chamber of Commerce; letters (11/30, 12/16 & 12/23) & Resume of Henry van Zile Hyde, Jr. (Bethesda, Maryland) re/ praise for Mr. Hyde’s help in the Nixon for President campaign, his employment on the staff of Vice President Nixon & his prospects for future employment.
