Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, resumes, applications for federal employment, memorandum, biographical sketches, telegrams, a position paper on psychological warfare & a newsletter: these are not filed in exact chronological order, but cover January through August. Examples are: a letter (3/1) from Ralph T. Wills (Office of Postmaster General) to Wilson re/ clarification of an application for appointment; a letter (n.d.) from San Diego constituent William F. McDonald (Capt. USN Ret.), his attached resume & an “Application for Federal Appointment “ – an Annapolis graduate, Capt. McDonald had a long career in aviation; copy of a letter (1/10) from Wilson to The Reverend S. Sutton re/ “your interest in the position of Governor of American Samoa;” a letter (2/17) from Connie Smith (Jack Morton Productions, Inc.) re/ “Thank you for recommending me to Ben Quill;” copy of letter (2/16) from Wilson re/ “To Whom It May Concern” introducing Mr. Bruce Hazard, “a very fine friend and outstanding leader of our community;” a stapled packet of letters (2/34 & 3/2), attached biographical sketch & a resume for B. F. “Sandy” Coggan – “President of several corporations, executive consultant to two of the largest corporations in the United States, and on the Board of Directors of many others;” letters (3/4 & 3/11) re/ Imperial Beach constituents Mr. & Mrs. Arthur L. Lynds, Jr. request reference for Mrs. Arthur L. Lynds of Chula Vista for the Mother of the Year award; a letter (3/8/61) from American Legion North Island Post No. 753 Roscoe T. Morse re/ his request for “support for my candidacy for Department Commander in 1961-62:” a letter (3/17) re/ Knox & Knox (Patent, Trade-Mark and Corporate Matters) responds to Wilson’s recommendation for Mr. Fred Schmidt; letters (Feb. & Mar.) re/ a fascinating exchange of letters between constituent Harvey J. Brabant, Wilson & Congressman James Roosevelt as to Mr. Brabant seeking employment as a security guard at Convair. A Republican since 1927, he had been selected as security guard for Franklin D. Roosevelt; memorandum & San Diego City Schools “Request for Evaluation” form (Jan.) re/ Clayton Thomas Foster & confusion over his experience in education; telegram (1/23) from Henry Mayers to Wilson re/ “Non-Partisan Appoints would appreciate your contacting Rayburn;” letters (2/22 & 3/6) & biographical sketch for Victor L. Walch re/ Mr. Walch seeks employment conference with Wilson; letters (11/60-1/61) & a “Who’s Who In The West” digest for George R. Maury re/ Mr. Maury (Attorney & Counsellor at Law in Los Angeles) was petitioning to become a United State District Court Judge & wrote Wilson for support. As a Democrat since 1924 and a strong supporter for Kennedy in 1960, he was not aware of Wilson’s Republicanism – this is a fascinating exchange of views; a packet of letters, a telegram, a position paper on “Needed: Unified Strategy In Psychological Warfare” & a copy of “Mayers Suggests Solutions To U.S. Propaganda Problems,” Town Hall re/ “Dear Bob- Attached is self explanatory. Would appreciate learning from you as to the status of the Commission selection” – this was the Citizens’ Commission for NATO; letters (11/10 & 17/60 & 2/2/61) re/ constituent J. W. Tincup seeks Wilson’s help in obtaining summer employment in a legal office for his high school son, William; letters (1/4 & 1/16) & resume of Robert Fahs (Asst. to Regional Operations Director, Post Office, San Francisco) re/ Mr. Fahs’ interest in becoming a full-time Executive Director for the San Diego County Republican Committee; letters (12/20/60 & 1/4/61) re/ Byron E. Harter (Washington, D.C.) requests assistance from Wilson in obtaining a position with the House Minority group; letters (7/27 & 8/1) re/ Wilson recommends Miss Eleanor Dale Davis be given a student loan by Furman University. She was a member of his staff during most of 1960; letters (June-August) re/ Wilson assists San Diegan Kendall Squires study at Exeter College, Oxford, England during the summer session.
