Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memorandum, office notes, telegrams, resumes, news clipping, biographical note & a newsletter: These are not filed in exact chronological order. Examples are: four single page letters (June & July) re/ George Thomas Cooney, Mrs. Harriet G. Stadtmiller and son Gerald U., and Thomas E. Smith; letters (7/31) from Wilson re/ introducing “Two of the finest young men I know will be visiting England during most of August. They are Edward F. Terrar, III and David Bryon Terrar, high school students in Washington, D.C.;” memorandum & attached letters (7/17 & 8/10) re/ Wilson contacts Senator Clare Engle in support of Robert H. Wilcox’s “interest in securing a position as Deputy United States Marshal in Idaho;” single page letter (9/6) from Wilson to The Honorable J. Graham Parsons (American Embassy, Stockholm, Sweden) re/ “Mrs. Gene McFall will be visiting Sweden for three months as an Adult Scout. Any courtesies you may extend to her will be greatly appreciated;” office note & letters (July & Aug.) re/ status of Mr. Lowell Davies as member of the Advisory Committee on the Arts of the Natural Cultural Center? – appointed on 9/23/60, his status was “At the pleasure of the President;” a letter (9/11) from Lowell Davies to Wilson re/ “Thank you so much for taking the time . . . to effect President Eisenhower’s appointment of me as a member of Advisory Committee . . . And to effect my reappointment by President Kennedy;” letters (Aug.) re/ Wilson writes a “To Whom It May Concern” letter for SDSC Professor James S. Kinder, who will be on sabbatical leave in northern Europe; a letter (8/26) from El Cajon constituent Norman J. Southerby to Wilson re/ seeks a letter from Wilson so he can sell educational supplies to Navy personnel during the summer to supplement in teacher’s salary. No one in Wilson’s office seemed to know this person; letters (Oct.) re/ “Our mailman and friend Roland E. Chase is interested in the job as Assistant Superintendent of the garage in the Sam Rayburn Building; telegrams & letter (Oct.) re/ Wilson’s assistance to Sterling Cole as a candidate for Presidency Aerospace Industries; copies of Wilson letters (11/8 & 11/15) re/ American Field Services, Americans Abroad, for Crawford student Robert E. Lutz II, “To Whom It May Concern” for student and Eagle Scout Richard E. Osher & for “Mrs. Daisy L. Johnson one of my valued constituents” applying for a position in the Mail Equipment Shop of the Post Office Dept.; letters (Mar.-June) re/ Wilson’s assistance to Quinn Hornaday on his Globe Theater and University City Charter Flight to visit Europe; letters (Mar. & May) & Richard H. Greenburg’s resume re/ Greenburg as Acting Regional Commissioner, GSA, San Francisco; letters (Mar.-Apr.) re/ Chula Vistan Dr. Wesley R. Walter’s interest in seeking employment with NASA; letters (Feb.-Apr.) re/ praise for Captain William M. Collins (Commanding Officer, NAS North Island) from the North Island Association, Inc. & the Chief of Naval Operations; letters (Apr. & May) re/ further information of B. F. Coggan’s search for an executive position with large corporations; a stapled packet containing a letter (12/61) & extensive biographical and other information for B.F. Coggan; a Wilson “To Who It May Concern” letter (5/25) to assist Mrs. Shirley Carter’s trip abroad; Wilson letter (5/11) to William Bowman (General Dynamics) re/ Mrs. Belva Jacobs: “I am happy to give her my personal endorsement and highly recommend her to you for a position of trust;” letters Sept.-Nov. 1961 & May 1962) re/ Edwin R. Baltimore asks Wilson for recommendation as he seeks admission to the University of California Medical Center. He also offers belated congratulations to Wilson for his victories in 1958 & 1960 as a Republican. Mr. Baltimore was not accepted for medical school, so was starting law school at age 41; a stapled packet of letters, office note, news clippings (12/61-3/62) re/ Captain J. L. Howard (U.S. Navy Supply Center, San Diego) and his appreciation of Wilson’s efforts on behalf of his book Our Modern Navy & S.D. Union reviews; office note, rough draft and letter (3/14) re/ Wilson to John F. Borchers (S.D. Chamber of Commerce) re/ “recommending that the California Museum of Science and Industry of Los Angeles award to Jim Dempsey, President of General Dynamics/Astronautics, the title of “California Industrialist of the Year;”1 letter (2/23) & 2 copies of Patricia Thompson’s resume to Wilson & support for his reelection and his efforts as Campaign Chairman; letters (Feb. & Mar.) re/ Wilson’s recommendation for Miss Virginia Fenton (La Jolla) to the Dept. of Commerce; a 1 page “Personal History Resume” for John M. McGwire (Washington, D.C.); letter (2/12) from Wilson to Miss Mona Moore (Point Loma Inn) recommending “my friend Janet Maisey . . . being considered for a job as a model there at Point Loma Inn;” a letter (1/23) from Congressman L.C. Arends re/ an interest in the application of Mr. James E. Armstrong, who is applying for Assistant to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense John Reed; a Wilson “To Whom It May Concern” letter (1/26) introducing Mrs. Albert Casey’s trip aboard; a letter (1/8) from Walter P. Kennedy to Wilson re/ his interest in becoming a minority pair clerk; letters (1/13 & 1/19) re/ “Thanks for bringing me up-to-date on the trials and tribulations of an ex-postmaster [Thomas C. Smith, Jr. of El Cajon],” political patronage, San Diego events & items from the Independent Forum of San Diego County; a letter (11/29/61) from State Senator Stanford C. Shaw & Wilson’s reply (1/5/62) re/ honoring Congressman Harry Sheppard on his 77th birthday.
