Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, pamphlet, notes, memos & resumes; these are filed in a somewhat random fashion back to January. Examples are: letters (Feb.-June) re/ former California Legislator Sheridan Hegland and his wife plan an extended trip to Europe, including the Soviet Union and receive assistance from Wilson; “To Whom It May Concern” letter (8/27) for constituent Mrs. Betty Walker; letters (Aug.-Sept.) & pamphlet from the United States Bureau of Mines, “Marine Mining Research Program F.Y. 1965”re/ Mr. D. R. Carlson had sent his resume to the Bureau; letters & office note (8/27 & 9/3) re/ Wilson’s recommendation for Richard E. Munske – editor of Undersea Technology; letters & notes (Sept. & Oct.) re/ “Dear Bob, Arch Calhoun was splendid in West Berlin, and remembered talking to you about Chula Vista. . . . his first assignment in the Foreign Service was as vice-consul at Tijuana in 1940-41, when he was fresh out of Berkeley. . . . Best, Neil Morgan;” letter (9/17) from Wilson to Dan Parker (Parker Pen Co.) re/ “we are embarking on a National Congressional Almanac which I hope will help us finance some of our Congressional races;” letters (8/15 & 9/3) re/ recommending Herbert Clark Hoover to receive the Nobel Peace Prize; letter & postal card (11/10 & 11/17) re/ Marsha S. Herrick’s admission to Smith College; a copy of Wilson’s letter (11/2) to Congressman Del Clawson (Long Beach) introducing Nicolas F. Vitale, “currently working at the Long Beach Naval Ship Yard as a pipefitter.” Both he and his wife were active members of the Naval Repair Assoc. and strongly support the “fight to keep our repair facility open, in opposition to the present Secretary of Defense;” a letter (6/9) from Walter R. Nickel, M.D. (San Diego Dermatologic Society & President of the S.D. County Medical Assoc.) & Wilson’s reply (6/29) re/ the recommendation of RAdm. William N. New as Surgeon General of the Navy - Wilson said he would put in a good word for him, “but I imagine some tops ranking Democrat’s would be more effect;” letters (3/31) & business card re/ friend and constituent Payne B. Johnson (Mgr. of Communication, General Dynamics, Electronics) was planning a trip to England, France & Denmark, so Wilson helped pave the way; “To Whom It May Concern” letters (4/2 & 4/10) for constituents and friends, Mr. & Mrs. C. Hugh Friedman & for Bradford W. Powers & family; letters (Apr.) re/ Wilson’s support for Lawrence Kahan to become an instructor of business law for the Univ. of California Business Law Extension; letters (5/5, 12 & 19) re/ the trip to Hong Kong of Mr. & Mrs. Bolton Lee & Mrs. C. Arnholt Smith; “Memo To The Boss From: Cathy, May 18, 1964”re/ Mr. Harry Stimson (or Stinson) called for recommendation to be appointed to the Securities and Exchange Commission; “To Whom It May Concern” letter (5/20) re/ Doctor and Mrs. Andre M. Burnier and their sons John and Robert “while they will be absent from this country;” office note and letter (4/2) re/ support for Miss Carol Cairo’s application for employment with the Federal Aviation Agency; letter, memorandum (Apr.) & 3 copies of “Personal History and Employment of Mrs. Bernice M. Hornbeck” re/ sister-in-law Mary Hornbeck’s request to Edgar Gillenwaters (Wilson Admin. Assist.) and his memorandum to Wilson suggesting Mrs. Bernice Hornbeck’s appointment “to the Republican vacancy on the Tariff Commission;” several “To Whom It May Concern” & two other letters (Mar.) re/ the recommendation of Mrs. John Naylor (San Diego) as “California’s ‘Mother of the Year;’” letters (1/20 & 1/23) re/ Wilson’s recommendation to the American Airlines that Roger Mudd (CBS Commentator) become a member of the American Airlines Admirals Club; a letter from Congressman Ed. Foreman (16th Dist., Texas) to Wilson thanking him for his recommendation leading to Foreman’s selection by the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of America.
