Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, office notes, periodical excerpts, resumes, news clippings, a Directory, Congressional opinion ballots. These are not filed in chronological fashion but do cover the latter part of 1965, first. They follow the previous patterns established in the early listed PR: Recommendations folders. Examples are: a letter (10/5) from Herbert Boggs (San Diego Caterers) & 2 letters (10/13) from Wilson re/ “To Whom It May Concern” letter for Boggs, his wife and the Ray Stauffers to take on their trip to the Orient; office note & letters (Oct.) re/ Irvine Reynolds (President of Copley International) planned visit to Great Britain and Spain; letters (Oct.-Nov.) re/ the importance of Wilson’s assistance in obtaining employment at Rohr Corp. for Mrs. Keigh Hall, “a good friend of Louise Lynch,” as an assembler and noting how as a Democrat she was crucial in helping Wilson win reelection; letters (July-Nov.) re/ Parade Publishing Co. President Arthur H. Motley lobbies Congressmen Wilson to help John J. Smith (President, Harvest Publishing Co., San Francisco) be nominated to serve on the “Advisory Committee on Older Americans” for the Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare; letters (9/30 &10) re/ Wilson endorses “Mrs. Helen Lyon Hunt’s application for admission to the Graduate Division, School of Education” in the University of Virginia; a letter (9/25) from Congressman Rumsfeld (13th Dist. Illinois) to Congressman Wilson & attached photocopy of “America’s Ten Outstanding Men . . . of 1965” featuring Donald Henry Rumsfeld’s resume in Jaycee TOYM of 1965 as completed by Wilson; memo & “To Whom It May Concern” letter (Sept.) re/ the secretarial abilities of Miss Phyllis McGovern; letters (June-Aug.) re/ support for Mrs. Aileen Macomber Wegner’s employment, a trip abroad for the Wallace family of La Jolla & Loren H. McElroy’s search for employment at Rohr Corp. (McElroy was a member of the Republican Central Committee and an area precinct chairman in the 76th Assembly District; memorandum, resume & letters (May-June) re/ Wilson and staff write recommendations for Colonel Richard J. Stillman (Arlington, VA) who seeks employment with local universities; letters (May) re/ interest of Miss Rosemary McCall (Fredericksburg, VA) in teaching employment in San Diego; letters (Apr.-May) re/ Associate Professor Helen L. Dorris’ (Home Economics, SDSC) was taking her Sabbatical leave (Summer-Fall 1965) to visit countries of Western Europe as to textile manufacturing, testing and marketing practices and Wilson’s assistance in this regard; letters (Feb. & May) re/ Wilson helps David Terrar (son of former Admin. Asst. Ed. Terrar) obtain summer employment; letter (4/25) from Suzi Herriah to Wilson thanking him for helping her obtain acceptance to Smith College; letters, news clipping s & memo (Mar.-Apr.) re/ Mrs. Meta Weir Bruce (Owner and Director of Bruce School) is honored as “State Mother of the Year” with much help from Wilson’s staff – especially Louise; “To Whom It May Concern” letter & others, plus a promotional flyer (Apr.) re/ Jim Carter (Key Club, Castle Park High School) “is running for Governor of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Key Club International;” a packet of letters & a copy of a 5 page U.S. Naval Personnel Research Activity, 10 December 1964 General Directory showing Title, Building and Extension of the personnel re/ two items here (1) Dr. Norman H. Gray obtains Wilson’s assistance for son Kirk to apply for a scholarship to the University of Denver and (2) Dr. Gray’s political commentaries, some rivalry with Congress Van Deerlin and Gray’s inked in listing of Democrat or Republican next to names in the Directory; memo & letters (Feb.-Mar.) re/ “To Whom It May Concern” letters & other help re/ Nell Harrison’s nomination as a member of the Altrusa Club for “Woman of the Year,” an introduction for “a very good friend and constituent of mine, Miss Julia Nichols,” & “It would be sincerely appreciated if you would consider extending membership in the TWA Ambassador’s Club to Mr. Robert G. Sullivan;” letters (Mar.-Apr.) re/ Wilson recommends Rowland Davis be appointed to the National Council to the Arts, but Lawrence F. O’Brien (Special Asst. to President Johnson) replied that the President did not approve the selection; letters, office note and telephone message (Mar.) re/ a delayed appointment for Shane MacCarthy (“an articulate Republican”) to the FCC. “There is no inkling at the moment as to what will happen,” wrote Senator Everett Dirksen to Bob Wilson; letters, office notes, news clipping (Feb.-Mar.) re/ Consular & Canadian relations as to Wilson’s attempt to have Earl Roberts appointed as an Honorary Consul in San Diego; letters, memorandum (Feb.-Mar.) & three copies of the National “Write Your Congressman” Club’s “Opinion Ballot” signed by liberal Democrat Attorney Wanda Sankary & her request for a recommendation for an appointment to the vacancy on the Municipal Court from Wilson. This created problems for Wilson’s staff, since Wilson could not write Governor Brown because “He dislikes me with a ‘passion.’”
