The title of this folder indicates “J.R. Dempsey for President Medal of Freedom 1963.” It contains a press release and letters from February through August that focus on the award of this medal. Examples are: “Immediate Release February 22, 1963 Office of the White House Press Secretary THE WHITE HOUSE” re/ two legal pages of a description of the award & the current members of the Distinguished Civilian Service Award Board; letters (4/30 & 5/1) from R.T. Blair, Jr. (General Dynamics/Astronautics) & Charles E. Borgatta (Exchange Club of San Diego) both of whom recommend Mr. J. R. Dempsey (President of General Dynamics/Astronatics) be awarded the Medal of Freedom; a copy of a letter (5/7) from Wilson to John W. Macy, Jr. (Executive Dir. Distinguish Civilian Service Awards Bd.) recommending Mr. Dempsey; copy of letter sent to Charles E. Borgatta & cc to Dempsey re/ Wilson’s acknowledgement of his recommendation sent for John Macy; letters (5/9 & 5/21) from Wilbur J. Cohen (Asst. Sec. of HEW) & John Macy to Wilson acknowledging the achievements and contribution of J. R. Dempsey; stapled packet containing more letters (May & June) from Wilson, Blair & attorney Charles E. Karpinski st stressing the background and contributions of J. R. Dempsey; more letters (July-Aug) praising J. R. Dempsey as an outstanding citizen, a request for an update and John W. Macy’s reply to Wilson indicating that the Awards Board was considering Mr. Dempsey. The folder does not indicate the Board’s final decision.
