Scope and Contents

A collection of letters & a post card. These are filed from May back to January. Examples are: a stapled packet containing a dozen letters (May back to Feb.) re/ Wilson helps Mrs. Gladys P. Fitch (Education and Scholarship Chairman, 22nd Dist. of the American Legion Auxiliary, Dept. of California) discover the military background and WWII Merchant Marine service of Walter W. Woods for a son who needed financial aid in high school; letters (Apr.-May) re/ Wilson assists constituent Edmond M. Sullivan in locating the Civil War pension record of his grandfather, Zachariah H. Mullins; letters (Apr.) re/ information for Dr. F. A. Bonaventura about Italians in the United States in the Congressional Record of 8/21/57; letters (4/19 & 23) re/constituent Bennie Snyder lost his military discharge, asks for Wilson’s help and is so instructed; letters (4/22 & 24) re/ Chula Vista teacher, Mrs. Marie E. Pullman, requests Wilson send materials on the government and the Capitol so she can share these with her classes- her son had already received them from Wilson; letters (Apr.) re/ students Charles Hinds & Daniel Paul Brassell list a number of topics on Washington, D.C. that they would like to receive and Wilson responds; letters (3/15 & 3/16) re/ Don Davis (Advisor, Squadron 209, Boy Scouts of America) was planning a trip for the squadron to a high school in Sidney Australia and requested Wilson’s assistance in using MATS to reduce costs. Wilson’s reply indicated that “MATS generally looks with disfavor upon applications for air transportation by small groups;” letters (Mar.-Apr.) re/ Mr. Abraham Andonie is helped by Wilson in obtaining an authenticated birth certificate from the American Consul in San Pedro Sula, Honduras; letters (3/28 & 3/31) re/ Emanuel Fanning ( Navy veteran) desires to join the Merchant Marine & Wilson provides the place to write; letters (3/16 & 3/27) re/ 8th grade La Mesa Junior High student Dora Birch is studying the Constitution & Wilson sends material to her; letters (3/6 & 3/29) re/ Wilson helps Cark C. Plain (Financial Writer, The San Diego Union) obtain information from the Maritime Board related to NASSCO; letters (2/24 & 3/26) re/ Wilson had to inform constituent Blaine W. Penn that he could not intervene in helping this former Bureau of Aeronautics inspector be reemployed by the government, but advised him to continue to contact local authorities . Penn’s experience of being “R.I.F.,” when Navy contracts declined in San Diego, was duplicated by a number of other inspectors – Penn’s letter is also a resume of his educational and work experience; personal card & 3 letters (2/26, 3/1 & 3/6) re/ Roy E. Canedy’s suggestion of using the term “Russianism” to replace “Communism” was forwarded to the Office of the Vice President and Nixon responded with comments; letters (Feb.-Mar.) re/ C.P. Stinnette (La Mesa Travel Agency) makes suggestions to the State Department concerning travel documents; letters & a post card (Jan.-Feb.) re/ requests for information on the Capitol, the White House, Wilson’s voting record for 1957 & a list of the President’s cabinet members from Miss Willis Porch, Miss Laura White & Mrs. Olive Hicks; letters (1/27 & 2/12) re H. P. Larson (San Diego Junior College and Vocational School) requests and receives from Wilson a copy of “Industrial Concentration and Product Diversification;” letters (2/3 & 2/12) re/ student Martha Jones is studying the Constitution in her history class and Wilson sends her information relative to the Constitution; letters (Jan.-Feb.) re/ Miss Marie M. Wendel requests and receives information “relative to overseas employment” from Wilson and the Civil Service Commission; letters (Jan.-Feb.) re/ Melvin E. Nunn, SDSC physics student & his wife are interested in overseas employment & Wilson & the Civil Service Commission respond; letters (1/22 & 2/10) re/ Dana Junior High School student David Cox is sent information on Japan and Canada for use in writing a term paper; letters (Jan.-Feb.) re/ H. L. Barnes (Bethesda, Maryland) requests material relative to schools in the San Diego area and Wilson and the Chamber of Commerce respond; letter (2/7) re/ Wilson and the Library of Congress respond to Herbert Grassie’s telephone request for information on the European Common Market; letters (Jan.) re/ Wilson and the Library of Congress respond to the San Diego Chamber of Commerce’s request for biographical material on Philip David Swing, “who represented San Diego and Imperial Counties from what was then the 11th Congressional District, for 1921-1933.”
