Scope and Contents

A collection of letters & post cards: these are not filed in consecutive order but cover July.-Dec. then focus on March through June. There is a wide variety of requests in these letters, mostly from local San Diegans. Examples are: letters (Sept.) re/ student Mike Huntley requests and receives a booklet on the Presidents of the United States; letters (Oct.) re/ Chula Vista High School Senior Jerry Rindone on the pros and cons of capital punishment and Wilson sent him information on prisons; letters (7/30 & 9/10) re/ Sweetwater Union High School debate student Miss Cheryl Carroll is preparing materials on Medicare & Wilson responds; letters (Oct.) re/ Madison High School Senior Bill Taylor is sent information on the “Role of the Attorney  General” for his term topic; letters (Nov.-Dec.) re/ student Miss Katie Sykes “who seeks a copy of a Congressional Document regarding Haym M. Salomon” is referred to libraries in California, since the Library of Congress did not have copies available for distribution;  letters (Nov.-Dec.) re/ La Mesa student Jim Wortman requests photos of presidents Kennedy, Johnson & Eisenhower for a class project – “I can get an A in my class if I receive from you what I requested;” letters (Nov.) re/ student Richard Bourda requests help from Wilson as to a research paper for his World Affairs class on the election of the President by popular vote or the electoral college; letters (11/30 & 12/5) re/ 8th grade history students at the La Mesa Junior High School,  Janis E. German & Larry Holden, receive information on the Constitution and the Federal Government from Wilson; letters (2/1 & 3/6) re/ student Michael Oberdorf is sent “information on medical care, Federal aid to education and foreign aid” by Wilson; letters & photo (Jan. & Mar.) re/ help to Wilson Junior High School student Michael Huntley in obtaining information of the California Legislature and the Declaration of Independence; letters (2/19 & 3/6) re/ El Cajon Valley Junior High School student Carol Summersgill is sent information from Wilson on Kennedy’s tax revision and Cuba; letters (Jan.-Mar.) re/ Imperial Beach student Elizabeth Berndt receives the booklet “Our American Government;” letters (3/4 & 3/11 & 3/6 & 3/29) re/ Parkway Junior High School 7th graders Olive Farrow and Barbara Schuster “are having debates on a proposition which states: ‘Resolved, that the voting age should be lowered to the age of 18’” & Wilson sends them information; letters (2/28 & 3/11) re/ Mrs. Ruth F. Vidal (La Mesa) requests information on lowering the voting age to 18 for her son who is debating this topic; letters (3/14 & 3/29) re/ El Cajon Valley Junior High School 7th grade student Janice Seward is assigned to write a government official and Wilson responds by sending her several pamphlets; letters (Mar.) re/ student Danny McAllister requests and receives information on water conservation and purification from the Dept. of Interior, Geological Survey; letters (Mar.) re/ Wilson sends information to San Diego student Karen Pflanzer for her history term paper, “An evaluation of the U.S. support in the Congo,1962-63;” a group of letters from students & Wilson’s replies (April 1-16) re/ topics such as his autographed photo, the Constitution, questions dealing with Indonesia, Vietnam, etc., more information on Congress, an invitation to visit the Chula Vista Rosebank School, information on the Budget and the Federal Reserve Board, Civil Rights  & suggestions to make it easier to contact Congressmen about “our wishes and opinions;” letters (Mar.-Apr.) from Steve Jones, Linda Vista School, Room 40 & Wilson’s replies re/ topics on how much money does the U.S. contribute to Mexico, franking privileges & does Wilson have a secretary? And Jones’ wishes that both President Kennedy & Wilson were in good health; a similar letter (Apr.) from Linda Vista student Bruce Jornson  asking about Mr. & Mrs. Wilson’s health; stapled copies of 7 letters (Mar.-May.) re/ Linda Vista School student Danny Alvarez seeks information on Wilson and on the government – “How are you? Fine I hope. Thank you for your reply. Do you think you could call me Dan and I well call you Bob?”; letters (4/11& 4/29) re/ La Mesan Gary R. Hajek receives printed material on Kennedy’s proposed tax cut bill; letters (Apr.-May) re/ El Cajon students David Maier, Jose Gonzales, Frank Trujillo, Jr., Pamela Hanson & Bruce Robert Heim receive material from Wilson on the topics each requested: lowering the voting age to 18, capital punishment & a recent issue of the Congressional Record; letter (5/28) re/ Wilson sends Theresa Salazar of El Cajon a copy of the Constitution; letters (5/8 & 5/15) re/ Wilson replies to Kearney High School Senior Michael Flynn’s American Government Class concerning questions about the U.S. policy on Cuba; several letters (May) re/ Miss Karen Karlstrom requesting pictures, texts & other information on Western History & WWI; letters (May) re/ Miss Sandra Acevedo requests & receives from Wilson “what sport I like and an autographed picture . . . . I enjoy all types of water sports and especially skin diving when the water is not too cold;” letters (June) re/ the Library of Congress clarifies the terms “State and Commonwealth” for Russell E. Chadick, Jr. & Wilson sends him a booklet entitled “Our American Government;” a printed copy of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address – “Complements of Thomas J. Lankford Minority Clerk in Charge of House Minority Room; a postal card (6/2) from 10 year old Lloyd Ferris & Wilson’s reply (6/7) re/ “Thank you for taking the time to give me the benefit of your views regarding the necessity of maintaining a firm Cuban blockade” and more actions by the President to stop Cuban communism; letters (5/6 & 6/3) re/ High School Sophomore Mary Barnhill (La Mesa) has been following Wilson’s “career ever since I was a little girl.” She wants to have career in politics and Wilson replies with a lengthy encouraging letter; letters (4/30 & 5/5) re/ El Cajon student Miss Joan Porter requests information on desegregation & “statistics on the number of Negroes in the different states;” letters (5/27 & 6/5) re/ student Debbie Doyle requests information on Congress, “specifically on the pages who carry messages for senators and representatives. I am a member of San Diego TARS, and am looking forward to working on the ’64 elections.”
