Scope and Contents

These letters are a continuation of the requests from students as noted in previous folders. Most of these are filed from December back to January. Examples are: a letter (12/9) from Barbara Hertel & Christi Browning (San Diego) & Edgar M. Gillenwaters’ reply (12/30) re/ several questions -- the multi-purpose stadium, the job situation in S.D., the biggest problem in the U.S. & what are the new bills Congress is trying to pass?; letters (Sept.-Oct.) re/ students from Room 2B, Grade 6 Walt Whitman School, request a copy of the Congressional Record; letters (Oct.) re/ Spring Valley student Don Ken requests documents on the Legislative Branch; letters (Sept.) re/ La Mesa Junior High 8th grader Jim Dakis request material on the Constitution & 11th grader Robert M. Butler, Jr. wants to interview Wilson & would like summer work as an election worker; 2 letters (June & Aug.) re/ a 10-year old New York student requests an autograph & a Santa Monica student & her Roosevelt School Room 11 class suggest the Shasta Daisy be the national flower for the U.S.; 7 letters (Jan.-June) re/ Imperial Beach, Mar Vista Junior High students are studying the Presidency and request information & Wilson responds; letters (May-June) re/ seven Stephen Foster Elementary School students request information about the American flag &Wilson sends them a booklet; letters (Apr.-May) re/ Edward Runge (San Diegan & American League Baseball Umpire) requests help as to his daughter’s Crawford High School term paper topic on the military. Mr. Runge is a Nixon and Goldwater supporter; letters (May) re/ Grossmont High School 11th grade student Marie Nelson requests information on the Black Muslim movement & Wilson has the Library of Congress send materials; letters (Apr.-May) re/ Richmond VA & Iron River, Wisconsin students request information on California & San Diego; letters (Apr.-May) re/ Jerry Cooper (Arcadia, CA) requests information on beach erosion. He and his family have been vacationing at Mission Bay for years; letters (Mar.-Apr.) re/ 8th grade St. John Evangelist School student Joseph Dibernardo sees a conflict between the Hippocratic Oath and Art. III, Sec. 3 of the U.S. Constitution & Wilson has the Library of Congress respond; letters (Mar.-Feb.) from El Cajon, Lakeside, Santee & Spring Valley re/ requests for material on the Westward Movement Wilson’s biography & photo, pamphlets on San Diego, segregation, population & horses; letters (Apr.-Jan.) from Washington, D.C., Beverly Hills, Massachusetts, New York & Illinois re/ requests for information on Congress, San Diego, California, the 36th District & Wilson’s stand on legislative issues like Medicare; a letter (3/4) from 8th grade La Mesa student Patrick C. Healy & Wilson’s reply (3/30) re/ information about Puerto Rico and potential statehood; a large number of letters (April – Jan.) from various San Diego students re/ such topics as: life in Washington, D.C., books on Spanish & dressmaking, a picture of Wilson & family, pamphlets on San Diego & Washington, D.C., pictures and documents from the Library of Congress, information on the Third Reich, pamphlets on George Washington, Medicare, documents on Malaysia, Indonesia & the Philippines, information on school dropouts, a copy of the Congressional Record for the Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, information on immigration, population & “Legalized abortions;” a letter (1/5) from Janet Traisi (La Mesa) & Wilson’s reply (1/12) re/ information on the Constitution.
