Scope and Contents

Many of these letters continue the pattern already established in the previous folders labeled “School Children.” Examples are: A large number of letters (Dec.-Nov.) are from students attending the 8th grade La Mesa Junior High School & requesting information on the Constitution & the Federal Government; letters (Nov.) re/ 6th grade student Annette Shaffer requests publications on conservation and Wilson has the Dept. of Agriculture respond. The remainder of the letters (1/64-11/63) are from Coronado students & residents concerning such topics as: the Bracero Program & Fishing situation; the proposed Civil Rights bill; exemption of married men from the draft; concern over increase in cigarette smoking; the Foreign Aid bill; Goldwater’s S. 181 – an education bill; the water shortage; appeals for tax cuts & anti-progressive tax mentality; selling US surplus wheat to Communists; conflicting views as to the Federal Aid to Education bill; need for a Youth Conservation Corps Bill; “inequities” in the Dual Compensation Act; need for an improved airport terminal for San Diego; improving the image of surfers in San Diego and California; lack of knowledge of communism among the population & a conservative’s concern about Secretary Udall’s proposed Pacific Southwest Water Plan.
