Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, a SDSC Speech Request Sheet, telegrams, notes and a conversation record: these are not filed in exact chronological order. Examples are: letters (Feb.-Mar. 1954) re/ details about a Lincoln Day address by Congressman Chester E. Merrow (New Hampshire) to the Men’s Republican League of San Diego County; letters (2/54 & 3/54) re/ “I read that Representative Jackson and members of the House Un-American Activities Committee are scheduled to be in San Diego the first part of April,” Harry Green (John P. Scripps Newspapers) requested that Donald Jackson speak to the San Diego Advertising and Sales Club and they were successful; letters (7/57) re/ Lions Club District Four Convention Committee’s interest in obtaining the Secretary of the Navy as a key speaker; a packet of letters (3/58-7/58) & a “San Diego State College Fifteen Annual Institute of World Affairs” brochure re/ Minos D. Generales and others discuss this summer session’s topic – “Disarmament and National Security;” letters (7/8 & 7/9/58) re/ Minos Generales and Wilson discuss Sec. Gates as a potential speaker for the 16th Institute; a 13 June 1958 “Speech Request Speech Executive Branch Liaison Office” form from San Diego State College re/ “Original Speaker Requested And Title Honorable J. Sinclair Armstrong , AstSecNav (FM) – Accepted” for the Commencement Address – estimated size of audience 6,000; letters (6/5 & 6/21/58) re/ the Naval Civilian Employee Associations Coordinating Council San Diego Area wish to invite Secretary Thomas Gates to have dinner with them during his next visit to San Diego; 6 letters (June - May’58) re/ Constitution Day, the San Diego County Masonic Officers and their attempt to obtain Vice President Nixon as a speaker on Sept. 4, 1058; a telegram (6/12/58) from Leon W. Parma (Wilson’s admin. asst.) to James Kuhn (First National Bank) re/ “Nixon Regrets Schedule Precludes Acceptance;” a letter (5/20/58) from Wilson to Dr. Wayne A. Neal (Ex. Sec. San Diego Council of Churches) re/ enclosed “materials the Federal Housing Administration has furnished with respect to housing for the elderly” and 3 letters (Feb-Mar.’58) from Neal and Wilson – Neal had indicated that “a number of churches have taken over major hotels, but these cater to those older people who are financially in the upper brackets;” Wilson telegrams (5/22 & 4/25/58), office note from Maggie, & letter (4/11/58) re/ Chamber of Commerce meeting - “McElroy personally contacted. Unable to attend because of President’s request that he not make any partisan speeches” & “Ralph Dewey Refused Speaking Assignment” – this telegram was in response to Milton Hallen (San Diego Traffic Services) re/ the Propeller Club’s request for an outstanding speaker for their National Maritime Day; copies of letters (4/23 & 4/16/58) from Wilson and Richard Nixon re/ the VP was unable to speak to the Marine Reserve Officers Assn. at their convention in May; letters (4/5 & 3/26/58) re/ “Jimmy Utt would fill the bill” as a speaker for the Hardware Association & Eliot Janway (Economic Research, N.Y.C.) discusses the need for tax cuts and spending for the Defense Budget – “well over $100 billion of accumulated Appropriations are waiting to be spent;” 2 letters from Wilson & 1 from Secretary of Treasury Richard Anderson (3/58) re/ the press of business in Washington prevented the Secretary from addressing the San Diego Chamber of Commerce and the Invest in America Committee; telegrams & office note (3/58) re/ more info. about the above committees’ search for speaker; packet of letters, telegrams & a “Telephone Conversation Record” (3/58) re/ the difficulty Thomas W. Sefton (S.D. Trust & Savings Bank) had in trying to obtain a speaker for the San Diego County Tuberculosis and Health Association. They were prepared to pay $250 towards transportation; copy of a letter (2/21//58) from Walter H. Smyth (Billy Graham Team) re/ “tentative plans for a tour of the State in one-night stands following the Bay Cities Crusade. . . . Mr. Graham is interested in including San Diego” – they were “most interested in a one or two night stadium rally;” a telegram (2/25/58) from Leon Parma to E. L. Flood, Jr. (San Diego) re/ “Henry Kearns unable to be your speaker April 17;” Wilson telegram (2/6/58) & attached “Memorandum To: The Vice President From: Bob Wilson” re/ misunderstanding as to Nixon being invited to attend a Lutheran Layman’s League convention in July in San Diego; office note, telegram & letters (1/57 & 2/57) re/ the Committee for National Engineers’ Week seeks Wilson’s assistance in obtaining a speaker of national prominence, including Vice President Nixon; letters (Aug.-Sept. ’57) re/ difficulty in obtaining a speaker for the 5th Annual Border Cities Conference; memo & 3 telegrams (10/57) re/ Under Secretary of Commerce Walter Williams to speak to the San Diego Rotary Club; speech form (10/18/57) for the San Diego County Federation of Republican Women’s Clubs re/ “The Honorable Howard Pyle, Deputy Assistant to the President” will be the accepted speaker at the 12:30 luncheon – size of audience 250; letters (9/10 & 11/20/57) re/ Wilson was not able to be the speaker before the Soroptimist Club in San Diego on January 14th; 5 telegrams (4/57) re/ Pat Hillings as a speaker in May.
