Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, telegrams, office notes, a pamphlet & a post card. Most of these are filed from January to December. Examples are: a telegram (1/30) from Wilson & a letter (2/3) from Frank Forward (Union Title Insurance Co.) re/ attempt of the California State Chamber of Commerce to have Barry Goldwater speak to a meeting in February. They were unsuccessful because “Goldwater has speaking schedule that would kill a cow;” letter & telegram (3/9 & 4/30) re/ promotion for the “Greater San Diego Insurance Day;” letters (April) re/ the success of the newly formed San Diego Chapter of the Association of the United States Army in obtaining Assistant Secretary of the Army George H. Roderick to speak at their Armed Forces Day luncheon in May; letters & telegram (Apr. & May) re/ V.P. Nixon was unable to address the National Assn. of Purchasing Agents’ convention in New York in June, because of his “long-standing commitment to be in California at that time in connection with the 25th Reunion of my Whittier College Class;” letters (May) re/ the San Diego Club Hi-Hatters, Wilson’s recent speech & other details; note (5/21) & letter (5/22) re/ “Dick Nixon is going to be in San Diego on June 15 to dedicate the Arts and Science Building at the University of San Diego,” an attempt was made to have him address an evening meeting of “leading builders in San Diego” but Wilson replied that Nixon was “completely booked up for his West Coast visit;” 1 page copy of Wilson’s letter (6/10) to Under Secretary of State Loy W. Henderson re/ an invitation to be the principal speaker at the Institute of World Affairs’ summer session at SDSC; letters (6/12 & 6/18) re/ J. Edgar Hoover was unable to accept the invitation to be a speaker at a birthday luncheon related to Dr. Frank Lowe; letters (June-July) re/ the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, with Wilson’s support, was unable to obtain Dana Latham (Commissioner, Internal Revenue Service) as their guest speaker for the 3rd Annual Businessmen’s Tax Planning Conference in San Diego; letters (May & June) re/ an attempt to obtain Pete Quesada (Federal Aviation Agency) to speak with the Kiwanis and Contour clubs was unsuccessful, but these letters do have interesting politically conservative comments about Hoffa, Pat Brown, Charlie Dail & federal aid to education; note & letter (7/6) re/ Minos Generales (Dir. Institute of World Affairs) asks Wilson to help him obtain Ambassador Robert Hill as a speaker at the 17th annual session in August; letters (7/22 & 7/30) re/ Rohr Aircraft executive N. De Witt asks Wilson to help in obtaining Nixon’s presence at a Boy Scout meeting scheduled in January, but Wilson indicated the V.P.’s “schedule is so filled that I doubt if he will be able to accept the invitation;” 3 letters (Aug.) re/ neither Wilson nor V.P. Nixon could “participate in the laymen’s rally of the Willamette Baptist men the latter part of October;” a large stapled packet of letters, notes & a phone conversation record (Sept.-Nov.) re/ Canadian Prime Minister Diefenbaker was unable to attend the launching of the Boy Scouts Golden Jubilee planned in January 1960 in San Diego; letters (Aug.-Nov.) re/ an invitation of the National Defense Resources Conference at Bakersfield next January to V.P. Nixon, but he was not able to attend. He was very positive about their agenda; a copy of a letter (10/9) from Mrs. John Paul Stone (President, Community Welfare Council, S.D.) to Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare re/ “an invitation to come to San Diego on a day convenient to you in January or February, 1960, to address the annual meeting of the Community Welfare Council,” the letter lists local issues and an expected an audience of 500 to 600; office note & letters (11/19, 12/3 & 12/9) re/ details from Irving Salmon on “The American Jewish Committee is furious at Dick, and I don’t blame them” & other items as to “Mr. Nixon’s inability to appear at the dedication” in New York.
