Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, office notes, a speech request form, memorandum, memos, telegrams, & a news clipping: Most of these are filed in chronological order from Jan.-Dec. Examples are: letters(12/59-1/60) from W. Ray Coyle (Bay City Publishing Co.), Bob Wilson & V.P. Richard Nixon re/ an invitation to speak at a dinner sponsored by the 80th District Republican Assembly (Chaired by Jim Hobel (Rohr Aircraft) – Nixon could not appear because of heavy commitments; letters (12/59-2/60) from Richard Nixon, Roscoe Wilkey (Bar Assoc.), Jerry Pecht (Bar Assoc.) & Bob Wilson, plus attached new clipping re/ attempting to obtain the Vice President for San Diego’s Law Week, but since he would be unavailable they did obtain Attorney General William Rogers; letters (1/28 & 2/26) & “Information Booklet for The Military Order of the World Wars” re/ their annual convention to be held in San Diego in October, search for a speaker and Wilson suggests General Shoup, Admiral Burke or Secretary Frank. Lt. Col. J.N.N. Berger (Commander, La Jolla Chapter) preferred to have Republicans; office note & letter (Feb.) re/ Wilson admires Superior Court Judge Joe L. Shell and made “strong pitch to the Vice President on behalf of the Masonic engagement in San Diego on Constitution Day;” letters (2/4, 2/9 & 2/29) re/ the further efforts to have Nixon attend San Diego on Constitution Day by the Masons was unsuccessful; letters (1/17 & 3/9) re/ Minos D. Generales (Dir. Institute of World Affairs, SDSC) & Wilson exchange information as to seeking speakers for next summer’s Institute; letters (Mar. & Apr.) re/ an attempt to obtain Nixon to attend Bay City, Michigan’s Armed Forces Day & former San Diegan Cmdr. Keith N. Sargent misses the San Diego weather; office note & letter (Apr.) re/ May Conference on the Government-wide Health Benefits Program & U.S. Civil Service Commissioner Barbara Gunderson was “happy to know that such a conference is scheduled,” but regretted that she had conflict at that time; “Speech Request Sheet Executive Branch Liaison Office” form (5/16/60) re/ The Propeller Club of the U.S. Port of San Diego’s Celebration of National Maritime Day: Under Secretary of Commerce for Transportation had accepted to be their speaker; letter & notes (May) re/ the S.D. General Contractors Assoc. was having difficulty obtaining a prominent national Republican leader to attend their July 8th dedication; memorandum, notes, telegram & news clipping (May) re/ “Goldwater Regrets Prior Commitment. Working On Replacement. Will Keep You Posted” - Bob Wilson - also telegram and new clipping from Leslie E. Gehres (Rryan Aeronautical Co.) on local politics & San Diego State conservative students establish a “Challenge” group to debate issues; “Memorandum For Boss” from Cathy (7/12) re/ Rotary Luncheon and “trying to line up Bob Gray who is assistant to the President;” memorandum & memo (3/9 & 2/4) re/ trying to line up Secretary Mitchell for Rotary Club; letters (June & July) re/ nuclear submarine pier funds have been approved & comment on the San Diego-Yokohama Friendship Commission and its General Assembly; letters (Aug.) re/ Wilson reply on HEW help to the California Council for Retarded Children to President Clair W. Burgener; letters & memorandum (Aug.) re/ an attempt to obtain a speaker for the Race Relations Society was being sought by Dr. Frank B. Gigliotti of Lemon Grove; letters (Sept.-Oct.) re/ Lt. Comdr. R. B. Sparks (N.R. Submarine Division 11-43) was unable to obtain Vice President Nixon to observe submarine operations in October; telegrams & memo (Sept.) re/ invitation to the Governor of Hawaii, William F. Quinn, to be Grand Marshall of the Mother Goose Parade, but he was unable to accept; telegram (12/14) from Wilson to Dr. Frank Lowe re/ Nixon on unable to accept speaking engagement “because making new job arrangements;” letters (Oct., Nov. & Dec.) re/ Don Wilkins (Advertising Federation of America) had invited Nixon to address their Third Annual Washington Mid-Winter Conference in Feb 1961. This was too far in the future for Nixon to commit, he said. By December Wilson replied that he would help, “although I’ll tell you quite frankly it does not look encouraging because he is going out to California about this time.”
