Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memos, memorandum, notes & other item: Examples are: a letter (1/5) from W. H. M. Swett (Mgr. Dir., San Diego Employers Assoc., Inc.) & Wilson’s reply (1/12) re/ “Many thanks for your kindness securing copy of the book I recently requested” and the SDEA hoped to “prevail on Dick Nixon to address our group . . . it would be a real boon to the San Diego area business community….” Wilson suggested they write Nixon directly; a letter (1/16) from Wilson to Dr. Frank Lowe re/ speaking engagement – “Barry Goldwater’s office informs me that he will be speaking in the Midwest on the 17th. . . . I have put in a request with Senator Kuchel;” stapled packet of 8 letters (9/60-1/61) re/ Krupnick & Associates (Adverting, St. Louis), Republican politics, the Chamber of Commerce, Wilson’s re-election, the Nixon-Lodge Campaign HQ and other interesting information; letters (1/61) re/ Jerry Lee Pecht (Advertising/ Public Relations) & Wilson correspond about obtaining Eisenhower on Valentine’s Day for the Community Chest, but Wilson replied that his Staff sent “a flat turn down as they say Ike wants to get a complete rest during his visit to Palm ;” letters (I/17 & 2/6) re/ E. L. Flood (newly elected President of the San Diego Insurance Agents’ Assoc.) asks Wilson to help in obtaining Dick Nixon as their main speaker at a luncheon. Wilson cautions them to wait until Nixon had established his law offices in Los Angeles. Flood was the head of the “Young Men for Nixon” movement; letters (12/60-2/61) re/ the Convair Astronautics Management Club invited President Eisenhower to speak at their dinner meeting in May with a cc. to Wilson. Eisenhower’s letter to Wilson indicated that Ike was not accepting any invitations after January 20th to the end of June. Both he and Mrs. Eisenhower needed a rest; letters (2/20 & 3/2) re/ Lemon Grove constituent Mrs. Dwight Putnam (AFS District Representative) seeks Richard Nixon to address the Mt. Miguel High School students & also discusses the Granite Hills High School’s success with a Japanese exchange student, who was keeping a diary that would be published when he returned home; a letter (3/3) from Kennerly Construction Company & Wilson’s reply (3/15) re/ an Eisenhower Republican Assembly was being formed and asked Wilson for help in expediting the organization. They hoped they could get both Nixon and Ike to visit at the same time and present their new charter. Wilson awaited Ike’s return from “his vacation trip at La Paz; however, I would not hold out too much hope. . . . He is besieged by thousands of similar invitations;” letters (Mar.) re/ the Joint Veterans and Service Committees of Long Beach and Orange County invited John S. Gleason, Jr. (Administrator of Veterans’ Affairs) to visit them concerning the crisis in Southern California, what was termed the “‘Great American Desert,’ as far as veteran bed availability is concerned;” a letter (3/4) from W.K. Barker (Dept. Vice Commander, American Legion, Chula Vista) & Wilson’s reply (3/15) re/ trying to obtain “Dick Nixon as speaker for your Area Meeting on June 10th and 11th. I suggest you call Herb Klein, Editor of the San Diego Union, who is the man closest to Mr. Nixon;” letters (3/28 & 4/4) re/ constituent Mrs. Ruth A. Green expresses concern over Wilson’s recent injury, pokes fun at democrats & invites Wilson to be the guest of the San Diego Chapter of the Links, Inc. at a luncheon in June. Their conference theme, “‘Our Heritage, A Challenge and An Opportunity,’ will concern itself with the American Negro’s heritage and the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities of citizenship.” They also hope to get Mr. Nixon as a special speaker. Wilson asked Herb Klein to speak to Nixon about this; letters (4/26 & 5/2) re/ The San Diego Junior Chamber of Commerce asked Wilson to contact Secretary of Interior Udall to be their speaker at the Annual Award Dinner. Wilson suggested contacting “Senator Clair Engles, who may be a more persuasive in securing a speaker from his side of the aisle;” letters (Apr.-May) re/ George W. Fisher (Major General, NG, Ret. & Attorney at Law) contacted Leon Parma (Wilson’s Admin. Assist.) to obtain a speaker for the S.D. Chapter of the Assoc. of the U.S. Army’s celebration of the birth of the U.S Army on June 14th. They eventually obtained Major General Dwight Beach with the help of Mr. Parma and the Wilson staff; letters (7/5 & 7/27) re/ Mrs. Elizabeth M. Alexander (Program Chairman for the San Diego Women’s Club) asks Wilson for advice on planning an “International Night” on November 14th. Wilson replied “Please forgive my delay” since the letter had gotten tucked away in his brief case. Wilson suggested San Diego Mayor Dail’s office could be of assistance. Dail was prominent in the “people to people” work and President of the Association; letters (June-Aug.) re/ the S.D. Soroptimist Club instituted a Two-Point Educational Program on June 6th to stress “Citizenship responsibility” to combat “Subversive forces and foreign ideologies that threaten the freedom of the United States of America and the rest of the free world.” They sought such speakers as J. Edgar Hoover, George Murphy, Senator Goldwater, Congressman Wilson, Admiral Burke, General McArthur, Edward Rickenbacker and other solid conservatives to preach Americanism for them. James S. Copely promised full and continuous coverage in the Copley Press; letters (Oct.) re/ F. Norris West (Public Relations/Advertising) was handling PR for the 15th Mother Goose Parade and hoped to obtain Dwight Eisenhower as grand marshal. Wilson suggested writing him direct, would try to help, but was not optimistic; copy of a letter (10/5) from Barry Goldwater to David S. Casey (San Diego) re/ “Congressman Wilson has forwarded to me your letter of September 18 relative to the possibility of my addressing the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in San Diego on March 17.” He had a previous commitment to speak before the Columbia Republican Club in South Carolina on the same date; letters, memo & news clipping (Nov.-Dec.) re/ the Escondido Chamber of Commerce keeps their fingers crossed in hoping to obtain Barry Goldwater as a guest speaker for banquet in January. Wilson wrote that “I did what I could to help you with your Goldwater appearance.”
