Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, telegrams, news clippings & memorandum: most of these are filed from December back to January, but also include a few from 1962. There does not appear to be a separate folder for 1962 in Box 52. Examples are: single page copy of unsigned letter to Mrs. Edna A. Coerver (12/6) re/ “Dear Edna: Sorry to burden you with another invitation for the Senator;” copy of single page letter (12/17) from Senator Barry Goldwater to F. J. Andrews (General Dynamics Astronautics) re/ “Your letter of November 19, 1963 to Congressman Bob Wilson . . . . I have not made a decision whether or not to seek the Republican Presidential nomination;” 2 letters (Sept. & Oct.) re/ Oberlin College 1964 Republican Mock Convention & Senator Morton could not work it into his tight schedule; letters (July) re/ M. Fred Tidwell, Executive Secretary, San Diego Federation of Teachers invited U.S. Commissioner of Education Francis Keppel to speak at the annual convention of the California Federation of Teachers, but Keppel’s prior commitment on that day negated this. Wilson was disappointed that the Commissioner could not attend; memo and letters (June-July) re/ Senator Kenneth Keating was not able to accept the invite to be guest speaker at the San Diego County Republican Central Committee’s annual 1963 $100 dinner; memorandum (5/16 & 6/6) re/ “Charlie Halleck has advised that he will be unable to make the June trip to San Diego;” letters and telegram (Apr.-June) re/ the National Apartment Owners Association’s national convention in October was unable to obtain Governor Rockefeller, Governor Romney and Senator Goldwater as guest speakers; copy and draft of Wilson’s letter to Governor Nelson Rockefeller (6/6/63) re/ “I would like to invite you to visit my home town of San Diego!” Wilson praises San Diego, especially its business climate and a local forum of 1,200 businessmen who meet frequently to hear national speakers. They were focused on political activity and “bears the name ‘Republican Associates of San Diego County.’”; letters (Apr.-May) re/ Minos D. Generales (Institute On World Affairs, SDSC), with Wilson’s assistance, was unable to obtain James W. Webb (Administrator of NASA) as a speaker for this year’s “Man—Tension, Technology, and Peace;” copy of telegram (4/5) from Edgar M. Gillenwaters to Frank Nicol (Quinn Hornaday Co.) re/ “Admiral Rickover advises that he airmailed regrets for the May Second invitation yesterday to both you and Fay;” letters (Mar.-Apr.) re/ the National Federation of Republican Women was celebrating their 25th year in Chicago and invited Mr. & Mrs. Eisenhower to attend. They were not able to attend because their plans for summer and fall were too indefinite; letters & telegram (Mar.) re/ Frank D. Nicol (Program Chairman, Greater San Diego Insurance Day) was unable to obtain Dr. Seaborg (Chairman Atomic Energy Commission) as a speaker, but wrote Ed Gillenwater suggesting his office try to contact Admiral Rickover or the head of NASA. He also extended an invitation to Bob Wilson (Chairman of the Republican Congressional Committee); memorandum (3/4) To: Bob From: Ed G. re/ attempt to “get Halleck and Dirksen to San Diego for a fund raising event sometime this spring, summer or fall?”; office reminder (2/22) “We correspond with Robert Crouch San Diego Chamber of Commerce . . . Re: Barry Goldwater and Bob Wilson attending their 36 Convention;” letters & telegram (January) re/ Wilson helped the Republican Assembly of Hemet and San Jacinto obtain Congressman James B. Utt as their guest speaker for their Annual Installation Dinner; “Memorandum For Bob From: Ed” (1/31) & “Memorandum To: V. Earl Roberts From: Ed Gillenwaters” re/ “Our assistance in obtaining a speaker for the 50th Anniversary of Parker School, Bob suggests you contact Pat Hillings, former Congressman and candidate for Attorney General;” letters (Jan.) re/ Wilson, George A. Scott & James F. Mulvaney (San Diego Baseball Co.) tried to obtain General Eisenhower as speaker for the National Conference of Christians and Jews dinner on March7, but writing from Palm Desert Eisenhower indicated that a “backlog of personnel correspondence and my writing chores” curtailed his speaking engagements; letters (Dec.’62-Jan. ’63) re/ Dr. J. Rollin Grant (Headmaster), with Wilson & others, was unable to obtain General Mark Clark (U.S.A. Ret.) as the guest speaker for the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Francis W. Parker School; letters (Dec. ’62 & Jan. ’63) re/ California Western University, with assistance from Wilson, was unable to have Eisenhower attend the Dedication Banquet for the new building of the School of Law. The former President was going to be in Mexico at the time of the ceremony; telegrams (Jan.) re/ James B. Utt & Wilson: “All California speaking engagements now coordinated by National Committee speakers bureau west coast representative Gladys O’Donnel, Long Beach;” letters (1/7 & 1/10) re/ the Republican Associates of San Diego County sought Wilson Admin. Asst. Edgar Gillenwater’s help in obtaining a speaker such as General McArthur, Taft, Jr., Thurston Morton or General Norstad. Gillenwaters wrote back a long letter in reply indicating details and suggesting two names – Congressman Gerald Ford and Senator Jack Miller; letters (Oct.-Dec. 1962) re/ the San Diego Downtown YMCA sought an Astronaut such as Col. John Glenn as a Speaker for their Second Good Friday Breakfast, April 12, 1963. The NASA coordinator of Astronaut Activities indicated that the demands of manned space flight made it impossible to use the astronauts, however the speakers bureau had aerospace technologists available.
