Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, notes, memos, memorandum & telegrams: these are filed from August 1964 back to December 1963. Examples are: a letter (8/7) from C. W. Patrick (President, San Diego Junior College) & a reply (9/10) from Catherine C. Parham (Wilson’s Washington Secretary) re/ the San Diego Rotary Club sought the Minority Counsel for Education in the House of Representatives Committee on Education and Labor Charles W. Radcliffe to address the many problems on the West Cost. Parham replied for Wilson, who was in England, that “Mr. Radcliffe . . . is unable to accept your kind invitation to speak at this time;” a stapled packet of letters, notes & memos (4/64-8/64) re/ “U. S. Naval Reserve Research Company 11-5, San Diego, California is host to the Office of Naval Research Branch Office, Pasadena, California, sponsored U.S.N. West Coast Reserve Research Seminar scheduled for 19 through 30 October 1964. This symposium has as has its theme, ‘New Research Horizons’ . . . [in such] fields as Defense, Aerospace, Oceanography, Naval Electronics, Nuclear, Social, Economic and Military Sciences. It will be attended by more than 100 Research Reserve Officers . . . .” The Seminar General Chairman was Cdr. Raymond D. Tuttle (USNR) and currently an employee of General Dynamic/Astronautics and he had originally written Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara as well as Wilson. Some misunderstanding occurred between Tuttle and McNamara in initial communications on this event; letters (6/64) re/ the San Fernando Valley Business and Professional Association sought Wilson’s assistance in holding a large fund raising affair in August to support two Congressional candidates for Districts 22 & 27. Wilson tried to line of Thurston Morton for the association; letters (June) re/ a follow up to the previous request to Senator Morton and others connected to an Orange County fund raiser in October; letters (4 & 5/64) re/ an attempt to obtain speakers for the San Diego Young Republicans’ July 4th picnic; copy of memo (7/9/64) From Frank Reynolds To Maggie Young re/ difficulties in obtaining speakers for the Fresno County Republican Central Committee; letters & memo (4/23 & 24/64) re/ Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Wilson’s attempt to obtain Congressman Gerald Ford as a speaker; letters (3/26 & 4/8/64) re/ the attempt of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick to obtain Dwight Eisenhower as a speaker for their March 17, 1965 program. They refer to Ike as “that fine old Irishman;” letters (3/64) re/ P. J. Hayes (Chairman, San Diego Police Officers Assoc.) asked Wilson assistance in obtaining Supreme Court Justice Bryon White as a speaker, but Justice White indicated the Court was holding an all-day conference on the day the Association requested; “Memo From The Chairman” (nd.) re/ Marge & Maggie -- confusion over obtaining Senator Margaret Smith as a speaker; letters & office note (2/64) re/ further information on the attempts of Mrs. Alpha Montgomery (President, The San Diego Chapter The Links) to obtain Senator Smith as a speaker; copy and draft of letter (1/29/64) from Wilson to “Fellow Republicans: I regret very much that I cannot be present to help you greet Representative Catherine May. . . . she’s one of the wittiest women in Washington *** In all this talk about women Presidential candidates, Catherine May’s name should not be overlooked;” letters & note (Nov.-Dec. 1963) re/ Congresswoman Catherine May’s acceptance to speak at a Republican Associates of San Diego luncheon on February 1, 1964. She represented the 4th District in Washington.
