Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, notes, a brochure, partisan newsletter, memos, news clipping & advertisement poster: these are filed from January to December. Examples are: letters, envelope and brochure (Jan.-Feb.) re/ Dr. Vincent Moore (Healing Arts Committee) “through the kind auspices of Representative Robert Wilson of San Diego” wrote the Honorable Wilbur Mills (Chairman, House Ways and Means Committee) extending an invitation to address the Healing Arts Committee’s 1965 Membership Dinner Meeting on the weekend of February 12th or 13th. Congressman Mills’ heavy schedule prohibited his undertaking this invitation; letters (2/1 & 2/10) re/ Adele Fay informs Wilson about a potential visit from Charlotte Reid and also hoped that Wilson’s “oral surgery was a complete success. I know it isn’t pleasant;” letters (2/15 & 2/22) re/ Miss Virginia S. Shonaker (American Business Women’s Assn.) sought Wilson’s help in attempting to obtain Ronald Reagan as a speaker at the 1966 Northwestern District Meeting of the Association; letters (2/10 & 2/23) & attached copies of The Virginia Constitutionalists (Virginia Beach) re/a request to obtain Congressman Robert H. Michel as a guest speaker by former San Diegan John Arthur. Arthur supported local Republican efforts to criticize the Johnson administration’s foreign policy, especially related to “soy bean shipments to Russia;” letters, memorandum & telegram (Apr. & May) re/ Allen Dulles was addressing the San Diego County Bar Association’s Law Day Luncheon and Wilson and his staff had aided in arranging this event; letters (Feb.-May) re/ Wilson helps Jay C. Wickler (Chairman) make San Diego’s Insurance Day a success. “The high point of the program was an address by Fred Felburg of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on the Ranger Moon Program;” letters & memo (May-June) re/ Terry O’Rourke (County President of Teen-Age Republicans) contacted Wilson’s office about inviting J. Edgar Hoover to address their summer barbecue, since he usually was in La Jolla to attend the Del Mar races each summer. Mr. Hoover appreciated the invitation, but had to decline because of “the pressure of official schedule . . . .;” letters (May-June) re/ the American Tunaboat Assn. had Wilson’s assistance in attempting to obtain MAdm. Denys W. Knoll (Oceanographer of the Navy) feature speaker at the Kiwanis luncheon meeting on June 29th. The Admiral wrote back to the Association and Wilson that he could not accept that he had already “accepted an invitation to participate in celebrations in my hometown Erie on29 June” for personal reasons; Memo to Maggie From: Marge (6/25) & letter (6/22) from Anne Volz (Secretary to Mr. Nixon) re/ a request from RNC of S.D. County to obtain Nixon as a speaker for the Teen-Age Young Republicans – “Could the boss give Nixon a nudge on this;” letters (July-Aug.) re/ an attempt by the Women’s Federation of Racine County Republican Party, using the Research and Public Affairs Service, Inc. (Burlington, Wisconsin) & Wilson to attempt to obtain Senator George Murphy as a speaker – they were not successful; letters (July-Aug.) re/ an attempt by Civic Service Incorporated (Clayton, Missouri), with Wilson help, to obtain Richard Nixon to speak to the Citizens for [Tom] Curtis Dinner. Nixon had a previous commitment, but they did obtain Bob Taft, Jr.; memo & letters (Sept.-Oct.) re/ another example of attempting to obtain Senator George Murphy as a speaker that was unsuccessful – this was for the Butler County, Ohio Lincoln Day Dinner; letters (July, Aug. & Oct.) re/ the Bolton-Minshall Recognition Committee of the Ripon Club of Cleveland, Ohio was unable to obtain Richard Nixon to address their dinner in February. Nixon’s necessity to do some traveling for his law firm inhibited his availability for his Lincoln Day schedule; letters, memo & PR pamphlet for Carl McIntire (Sept.-Oct.) re/ Madame Chaing Kai-sheck was visiting the U.S. & attempts were made to have her visit San Diego State College, as well as address the 20th Century Reformation Hour Committee of San Diego County’s planned rally sponsored by such organizations as led by radio-preacher Dr. Carl McIntire and his anti-communist crusade; letters (11/9 & 11/15) re/ failed attempt to obtain Scott Carpenter as the Grand Marshall of the Mother Goose Parade; letters & memorandum (Nov.-Dec.) re/ an attempt to obtain General Eisenhower to attend the dedication ceremonies of the new Junior Achievement Building was unsuccessful; letters (Dec.) re/ another failed attempt to invite Cmd. Scott Carpenter (NASA) to San Diego, in this case it was the 15th Annual Greater San Diego Insurance Day meeting as organized by Wilson’s nephew Bud Wilson (Wilson Insurance Co., Chula Vista).
