 File — Box: 129, Folder: 6
Identifier: Folder 6

Scope and Contents

This is a fairly large collection of letters, but only a few cover June back to April. The rest cover March, 1955. There does not appear to be any dated 1954. The predominance of these letters are single page thank you commentaries to Congressman Wilson. Some names and text are: Sec. of Defense Charles Wilson (6/11) re/ “I appreciate your kind letter . . . and enclosed mottoes;” R.S. McCune Motors (6/11) re/ “Dear Bob: Thanks for the three quotations which I think are splendid;” M. O. Ewald (City of Carlsbad, CA) (6/16) re/ “Thank you so much for the three copies of the ‘sentiments’ from your office wall;” California Attorney General Edmund B. Brown (5/3) re/ “Thank you for the copies of the ‘sentiments’ that you sent me;” California Assemblyman Frank Luckel (4/4) re/ “Thanks so very much for the fine mottoes to put on my office wall . . . . Best regards to you and the attractive wife;” James A. Robbins (S.D. County Supervisor, 3rd Dist.) (4/5) re/ “Please pardon the delay in thanking you for the sayings of three fine men”- Lincoln, Baruch & Burnham; Senator Frank Carlson (Kansas) (4/8) re/ “Many thanks for sending me copies of ‘sentiments.’” The rest of the letters are for March: Assemblyman Jack Schrade (3/28) re/ “I want to thank you for the parchments;” L.N. Turrentine (Superior Court) re/ “the ‘sentiments;’” Congresswoman Ruth Thompson (9th Dist., Michigan) re/ “reprints of famous Americans;” subsequent letters either thanked Wilson for sentiments or these quotations. Examples of other persons named are: Municipal Court Judge Eugene Daney, Jr.; Superintendent Roy E. Simpson (CA Dept. of Education); Glenn Rick (City Planning Dir.); Congressman Myron V. George (3rd Dist., Kansas); Senator William A. Purtell (Connecticut); Senator George W. Mallone (Nevada); Senator Herman Welker (Idaho); Jim & Charlotte Robbins (S.D. County Bd. of Supervisors) – They would have the “sentiments” from Lincoln & Baruch framed for office or den at home; Robert C. Kirkwood (State of California Controller); Senator Styles Bridges (Chairman, Republican Policy Committee); Senator Jenner (Indiana); Congressman Walter M. Mumma (16th Dist., Penna.) – “I also appreciate the opportunity you gave me to submit thoughts on the atomic explosion;” Senator Leverett Saltonstall (Mass.); Senator Homer E. Capehart ((Indiana); Senator Ralph E. Flanders (Vermont); Senator Joseph R. McCarthy (Wis.); Senator William F. Knowland (CA); Mrs. Joseph R. Farrington (Delegate from Hawaii); Senator Thomas H. Kuchel (Calif.); Congressman John V. Beamer (5th Dist. Indiana) & his photo; Senator Barry Goldwater (Arizona); Charles A. Woverton (1st Dist. New Jersey) & penciled note as to where the work was done; Senator Margaret Smith (Maine) & added note from her: “I am in Asia and Europe meeting with the leaders of various nations and discussing world problems and the ultimate objective of peace;” Senator Francis Case (S. Dak.); Senator Arthur V. Watkins (Utah); Senator John J. Williams (Delaware); the remainder of the thank you letters are from Congressmen such as: Joseph W. Martin, Jr. (14th Dist., Mass.), Richard H. Poff (6th Dist., Virginia) – who said he had a hobby of collecting quotations suitable for framing & Joseph P. O’Hara (2nd Distl., Minnesota) who appreciated the quotations on “DUTY AS SEEN BY LINCOLN” – “FACTS” and “MAKE NO LITTLE PLANS.” Although it is not clear that Wilson sent these quotations – sentiments to only Republican Congressmen and women, it does appear that only Republican Senators received them and responded as such.
