Scope and Contents

A fairly large collection of letters, business cards, office notes, certificates, statements, booklets, poems, picture post card, stamp sheets, pictorial map, parking permit card & holiday greeting cards. These are filed from December 1961 back to December 1960. They follow the similar pattern of previous Wilson “Thank You Letters” of the original letter or item attached to Wilson’s response. Examples are: single page letter (12/26/61) from Leon W. Parma (Admin. Asst. to Wilson) to Paul Ecke, Jr. re/ Dear Paul: Enclosed are several pictures of Bob presenting a poinsettia to Senator Tom Kuchel . . . . All of the plants have been delivered here in Washington and were warmly received by everyone;” single page letter & envelope (12/21) from Wilson to David Burpee (Fordhook Farms, Doylestown, PA) re/ “Thank you for sending along the Marigold seeds;” letters (11/15 & 12/14) re/ Congressman Hale Boggs sent Wilson the 1961 Jefferson Parish, Louisiana Yearly Review featuring an article by Boggs; business card from Matt Triggs (American Farm Bureau Federation) & Wilson’s letter (11/15) re/ sending Wilson a calendar date book; Wally Knutson’s Art Leach Realtor business card & Wilson letter (12/4) re/ “Dear Wally: Thanks for your courtesy in driving me during the North Park Parade;” letters (11/9 & 11/15) re/ the Ambassador of Pakistan, Aziz Ahmed, sent Wilson a pamphlet containing some statements from President Ayrub Khan’s speech to a joint session of Congress in 1960; letters (Oct.) re/ items from Crosley Broadcasting Co. (Ohio) & Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co. in San Diego; note & letter (9/13 & 9/19) re/ Dr. Ben R. Bryant (Imperial Beach) thanks Wilson for voting against HR 8890 – “May we ever keep our schools out of the clutches of the federal government;” letters & certificate (Sept.) re/ installing Wilson as an honorary citizen of South Dakota’s centennial celebration; letters (Oct. & Sept.) re/ George Crook of Calexico sent Wilson a copy of the local Farm Bureau Monthly featuring an article on agriculture; letters (Sept.) re/ the Independent Petroleum Assn. of America sent Wilson the 1961 edition of The Oil Producing Industry in Your State; letters, statement & booklet (Sept.) re/ Senator Everett Jordon (North Carolina), his statement to the Senate (9/13) & a booklet entitled “North Carolina Trade Fair;” letters (9/18 & 9/25), 1961-62 Courtesy Pass for the Metropolitan League & Southwestern College Complementary Pass from District Superintendent Joseph Rindone (Sweetwater Union High School District) -- Wilson hoped he could attend some games; Wilson letter (9/25) to Oscar E. Bredenberg (Block Point, Vermont) re/ “the Brooklyn Young Republican ribbon [1883], which I will treasure and keep in my Republican collection. . . . I am sure we can’t find many there today;” letters (9/11 & 9/12) re/ Congressman Harlan Hagen (14th Dist. CA) sent a sample of California walnuts supplied by the Diamond Walnut Growers, Inc. of California; letter & business card (9/13) re/ Congresswoman Julia Hansen (3rd Dist. Washington) sent an “OCEAN SPRAY Cranberry Juice Cocktail – it is delicious;” letters (9/8 & 9/15) &a booklet, Success Story Given their choice 28 Million Filipinos Chose Freedom re/ A. L. Valencia (Philippine Information Agency) sent a booklet marking the fifteenth anniversary of the Philippine independence; letters (Sept.) re/ box of goodies from Georgia companies & a book by Hillel Black, Buy Now Pay Later from the Robert Hall Clothes (N.Y City); letters & booklet (Aug.) re/ Joseph Massaglia, Jr. (President, Massaglia Hotels) sent a special PRESIDENT’S Credit Card to Wilson and a booklet featuring The Hotel Miramar in Santa Monica; letters (Aug.) re/ thanking Senator Daniel K. Inouye for sending a Dole pineapple that were delicious; letter (8/17) re/ Kenneth Beam of San Diego sent Wilson “copy of your book, ‘The Twenty Billion Dollar Challenge’. . . . about juvenile delinquency;” letters (Aug.) re/ Dr. Chambers (S.D.) sent a copy of Forward Strategy for America, Congressman Saund (29th Dist. CA) sent a package of California dates, Senator Inouye pure Hawaiian Cane Sugar & Jerry O’Brien (Thermo-Fax Sales, San Diego) a mounted newspaper clipping showing the reapportionment of San Diego County; letters (July) featured a “beautiful wood gavel and pounding block” from the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, several conservative and nationalistic poems by constituent Mrs. Blanche L Stout, California walnuts from Congressman McFall (11th Dist., CA), a postal card showing a photograph of Chula Vista Mounted Police & “a copy of a recent reprint from the READER’S DIGEST entitled ‘What is Profit’ by Fred I. Kent” sent by J. Walter Thompson Company extolling “how the American profit system works for the benefit of all;” letters (June) featured the American Medical Assn. providing their monthly publication Today’s Health, Senator Inouye providing the Kona Farm Bureau’s Kona coffee to Wilson, W. E. Quirk (Pacific Telephone and Telegraph of San Diego) providing cigarette lighters to Leon and Wilson; Congressman Bonner (1st Dist. N.C.) sent a brochure on the 1961 Season drama, “The Lost Colony,” a welcome back “Proclamation” presented to Wilson that was waiting for him when he arrived the previous week & Congresswoman Green (3rd Dist., Oregon) sent Oregon cherries stuffed with Oregon Filberts; letters (May) featured Wilson thanking John Allen (Union Oil Co.) for sending “color prints of Mary Anne on the beautiful Union Oil float;” thanking Congressman Hagan “for sending along the boutonniere made of fine California cotton” and a brief promotional blurb from the Central Valley Empire Association, W. Cleon Skousen (Salt Lake City) sent an autographed copy of The Naked Communist, a gift from the School of the Ozarks of a little brown jug of Ozark sorghum, thanks for tickets to the County Employee’s Association dance as sent by Ethyl Buck, “generous gift of Texas onions” from Congressman Joe Kilgore & the Texas Citrus and Vegetable Growers’ and Shippers’ Association of Harlingen, Texas & Franklin L. Barnes Manzanita Ranch, Julian – “Thank you for your letter of May 9th setting forth your pertinent comments with respect to President Kennedy’s farm program . . . . the free enterprise system not only belongs in business and industry, but also in farming as well; letters (April) featured “Thank you [John Patrick Carroll of Chula Vista] for your thoughtful letter of April 20th, sending along a copy of Revival Americana,” “Dear Henry: Thanks for sending along the RAMBLER AMERICAN. My son was delighted and has proudly added it to his collection,” thanking Dr. Joseph V. Charyk (Under Secretary of the Air Force) “for you courtesy in taking me aboard your plane on its recent trip to San Francisco,” Senator Jack Miller (Iowa) sent a “package of JOLLY TIME pop corn, which is a must in the Wilson home” & SIOUX BEE honey spread from the Sioux Honey Assn., William A. Schoech (Deputy Chief of the Bureau of Naval Weapons) sent Wilson “the beautiful BuWepes insigne, Marden R. Bishop (Dir. of Public Relations, Willy Motors, Toledo, Ohio) sent “several sheets of ‘See America First’ stamps. . . . we put these stamps to good use during the latter part of Pan-American Week,” thanking Colonel Edwin B. Miller (Commander, USAF 110th Air Base Wing, Bolling Air Force Base) for sending the Wilson family an Honorary Membership Card to the Base Officer’s club, an album “Ports of Paradise” from Senator Inouye – “Our family is enchanted with Hawaiian music,” to Dr. John M. Sprague (Humble Oil & Refining Company, K St. Washington, D.C.) “Thank you for sending along the pictorial map of the shrines and battlefields of the Civil War – this is a large fold out map, Dr. Clark Kerr (President, University of California, Berkeley) sent a parking permit for the 1961-1962 year, Wilson to Paul Lewis (Press Intelligence, Inc. Washington, D.C.) “Thank you for sending me a copy of the book ‘I Like It Here’ . . . . It is British humor but very droll” & to Mrs. Brian Duff (Alexandria, VA) “You were very thoughtful to send along the extra copy of our Cherry Blossom Princess, which we made good use of. After a week in the hospital I’ve convinced doctors that if the cherry blossoms can come out, so can I;” letters (March) re/ business card of Marvin O. Thompson (President, Arabian American Oil Co.) sent a copy of the Aramco Handbook – “This volume summarizes the long history of the Middle East,” Mgr. Frank X. Cahill sent Wilson a La Jolla Country Club Courtesy Card, C. E. Huntley (President, The American Short Line Railroad Assn.) sent a copy of their 1961 LEGISTLATIVE POLICIES booklet & K.C. Stone (Kinetics Corp., Solana Beach) sent a Griffin tie pin; letters (February) featured a copy of AMERICA’S BETRAYAL received from constituent Mrs. Mary Placia, a similar copy from constituent Mrs. Louis R. Marbourg, a copy of Poetry for Pleasure from Samuel S. Vaughan (Doubleday & Company, Inc.), a Maine lobster pin from Congressman Stanley R. Tupper (2nd Dist.), Wilson’s thank you to Ernest Sturm (Fox West Coast Theaters) “for sending me the pass which I hope I can find time to use in the year ahead & Congressman Don L. Short (At Large, North Dakota) sent Red River Valley potatoes – “The Wilsons are great potato eaters;” letters (January) thanking constituent Henry Lippitt for reminding Wilson of Barry Goldwater’s Conscience of a Conservative – “You can be sure I am well aware of the contents of the Senator’s book,” thanking Van Camp Sea Food Company of Long Beach for the generous gift of tuna, Congressman Charles Chamberlain (6th Dist. Michigan) - “Thanks again for sending me the beautiful CONVAIR model,” thanking the Dept. of Interior s for sending the 1959 Minerals Yearbook, RAdm. M.E. Arnold – thanks for “a courtesy membership to the Navy Golf Course in Mission George,” Congressman D. S. Saund (29th Dist. CA) – “sending me some Coachella Valley dates,” General Mgr. R. B. Swanson (Convair) – “your thoughtfulness in forwarding us the delicious box of fruit from Florida,” Tom Pickett (National Coal Assn.) – “sending along a copy of the 1960 Bituminous Coal Facts book,” Robert Black (Genl. Mgr. Pacific Telephone, S.D.) – “sending the framed copy of the San Diego Directory cover for 1961,” Holiday Greetings card from Bonanza Airlines, card & flowers from Alice and Allen Zukor, Christmas & New Year card from Milt Filluis (National Steel and Shipbuilding Corp.), C. W. Carlstrom – “You were very kind to remember us at Christmas time,” a similar letter to Ralph E. Becker (Brookhart, Becker & Dorsey, Washington, D.C.), card & citrus fruit from R. B. Swanson (Convair), thank you to Mortimer Doyle (National Lumber Manufacturers Assn.), Christmas card, cookies and Leechys from the Ying mai Hom Laundry , & W. Glen Stalker (Calif.
