Scope and Contents

Another large collections of letters, a packet of information from Michigan, news clippings, periodical excerpts, envelopes, a press brief & holiday cards. These are filed from June back to January as follows: letters (June) – Mrs. Peter A. Wimbrow (Treasurer, Worcester County Republican State Central Committee, Berlin, MD) – thanks “for your thoughtfulness in arranging flowers in our room. Mrs. Wilson and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Ocean City;” a large envelope containing a “free Michigan Vacation Fun Pak,” fishing calendar card # 1799, letters from Congressmen Wilson & Hutchinson (MD) & a poetry blurb from Edward Hutchinson -- Wilson also indicated that a model automobile was sent and his son Bryant had added it to his collection; letters (March) – Capt. Joe T. Talbert, Ret. (Coronado) – “Thanks for the clippings regarding JFK’S re-election, his handling of the Cuban situation, and David Lawrence’s editorial entitled “After Two Years,” Paul Ecke – “We’re healthy again! Your fabulous oranges arrived on the gloomiest day, Robert Bruce (Pacific Telephone) – “Thank you for forwarding your 1962 annual report;” Clark Kerr (President, University of Arizona) – parking permit & offer of assistance, William A. Bales (President, Buchanan County Republican Club, St. Joseph, Missouri) sent “a case of assorted cereals [Quaker Oats Co.], rather than the case of Grits that we promised you,” letters (February) – Charles Walker (American Banking Assn.) sent a copy of Financing American Enterprise – The Story of Commercial Banking, Congressman Basil L. Whitener (North Carolina) sent a copy of E. F. Gallagher’s booklet for public schools entitled “The Heart of America,” Congressman John M. Slack, Jr. (3rd Dist., West Virginia) sent a copy of “America’s Debt to Greece,” S. Lees Booth – “Thank you for forwarding ‘The Consumer Finance Industry’ booklet,” the World Coffee Information Center sent their report “Impact of Coffee on the U.S. Economy,” Mortgage Bankers Assn. of America – thanks for sending “The Federal Land Bank System” and “The Real Estate Lending Activities of the Farmers Home Administration,” to Colonel Wilson R. Wood (Commander, 1100th Air Base, USAAF) – thanks for sending the honorary membership card for 1963, the American-Lithuanian Council – thanks for the “bound volume entitled ‘Lithuania – Land of Heroes,’” G. A. Belknap (Fort Worth, TX) – “your thoughtfulness in sending me newspaper clippings” – these are in an envelope attached to Wilson’s letter, Capt. Joseph T. Talbert, Ret. (Coronado) sent futuristic 1985 “humorous ‘International Press News Briefs’ . . . . [and] Vice Admiral Sabin’s article [1/63] regarding Cuba;” the American Mining Congress sent Wilson their booklet entitled “The Stockpile Story” in response to Kennedy’s State of the Union message facilitating “disposal of $8.4 billion worth of strategic materials in the Nation’s military stockpiles,” George Cook (Calexico) send a revised edition of “The Keynes at Harvard,” Captain F. G. Soule (Chief of Medicine, U.S. Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Md.) sent “laboratory instruction manuals which will be of immeasurable assistance to our family,” letters (January) – E. L. Thacher (El Cajon) sent personalized memo pads, Robert Bruce (PacTel, S.F.) sent a 1963 personal income tax guide book, Congressman Henry C. Schadeberg (1st Dist. Wisconsin) sent “handsome calendars for 1963,” Sunkist Grocers, Inc. -“thanks for the delicious oranges,” Arden Farms – a thoughtful Christmas reminder and the delicious Arden Farms cheeses, the Director of the National Parks Conrad Wirth sent Wilson 1963 Annual Pass, the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce extended an honorary membership to Wilson & felt that “La Mesa is probably the best ‘represented’ city in California, with four assemblymen in the 76th, 77th, 78th and 80th districts, a state senator, three representatives in the national congress, in the 35th, 36th and 37th congressional districts, and two senators in the national congress,” Ralph Becker (Brookhart, Becker and Dorsey, K St. Washington, D.C.) sent Iowa sausages, The San Diego Athletic Club made their facilities available to Wilson, R. B. Swanson (Florida City) sent “us the basket of ‘goodies.’ We’re enjoying them all, and Maggie is particularly enjoying the fruit cake,” RAdm. Almon E. Loomis (Commandant, Eleventh Naval Dist.) made the facilities of the Navy Golf Course available to Wilson, Fox West Coast Theaters presented passes for the Wilsons, the La Jolla Country Club made their facilities available to “us again this year,” Robert H. Molitor (El Cajon) sent a long personal 4 page letter entitled “Events of 1962” to Wilson – it is a good example of a righteous, conservative rant against Democrats, the Supreme Court, liberals, etc., Charles Gould (San Francisco Examiner) sent a copy of their January 8 issue “your fabulous city,” the California Dept. of Public Works sent “a 1963 map of California Freeway and Expressway System,” for fifty years the J. Walter Thompson Company of New York had been compiling and editing the decennial Census of Population – they sent the eight edition to Wilson, the American Farm Bureau Federation sent a calendar book, Jack Mills (Arlington, VA) sent Milwaukee sausages; thank you message to De Georgio Fruit Corp. of Borrego for sending “those delicious raisins;” to the Challenge Cream and Butter Assn. (Los Angeles) – “We have since sliced up all the cheese with the beautiful knife, and enjoyed every morsel,” Christmas card and record from KRLA Pasadena, business card and calendar from Don T. Campbell (American Airlines), Vernon Scott and Chuck Brownson (National Tax Equality Assn., Washington, D.C.) – “a thoughtful Christmas reminder . . . . You have more than sweetened us up with the fine candy. Your campaign ‘sweetening’ was wonderful, too,” Tom Kenemar (The Capitol, Washington, D.C.) – “The delicious pecans were especially appreciated this year, and have helped improve a lot of holiday cookery,” Joe Holt’s business card, memo and letter re/ “your thoughtful Christmas reminder . . . . I hope you’ll tell your Dad, too, how much we all enjoyed the delicious Arden cheeses;” Donald Baldwin’s business card (National Lumber Manufacturing Assn.) – Christmas reminder and the beautiful lighter, Fred G. Hussey’s business card (Outdoor Advertising Assn. of America) – “You have truly kept us in good spirits,” Christmas card & liquor from Frank L. Sundstrum (Schenley Industries, Inc.), Ted Compton (Nat. Assn. of Manufacturers) “the beautiful lighter is now a fixture in our home,” Edmund Converse (Bonanza Airlines, Las Vegas) – Your glasses from last year are now joined with the larger ones of this year, and they had much to our bar’s décor,” Governor and Mrs. Munoz Marin (Commonwealth of Puerto Rico) “The beautiful verse and illustrations of your attractive book make it a welcome addition to our library,” Season Pass from William H. Oldknow (Frontier Frice In Theater, Midway) & Gordon L. McDonough (15th Dist., CA) to Wilson – “In cleaning up my records, I find that I have an inventory of Agricultural Yearbooks, and I am transferring from my inventory in the Folding Room to yours 4 copies of the Yearbook for 1957 and 245 copies of the Yearbook for 1959.”
