Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, holiday & business cards, periodical excerpts, reports, reprints, envelopes, office notes & news clippings. These are filed from December to March. As with previous folders in this series, they represent Congressman Wilson’s appreciation of the various gifts, rewards and comments he received from constituents and others. Examples are: a card from Ted Compton (Nat. Assoc. of Manufacturers) & Wilson’s reply (12/26) re/ “the beautiful key desk thermometer;” letters (12/16 & 12/24) re/ thanking RAdm. Almon E. Loomis (Commandant, Eleventh Naval Dist.) for “the Navy Golf Course Membership card;” business cards from Geheres, Kovalcheck & Preston (National Marine Terminal) & letter (12/23) re/ “Just a short note to thank you for your thoughtfulness in sending the Tuna Boat full of Westgate products;” letters (12/17 & 12/23) re/ a copy of We, the People, the Story of the United States Capitol from the Hon. Fred Schwengel (Pres., United States Capitol Historical Society); other gifts for December were – planning calendars from Robert Bruce (Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co., S.D.), a “Voices of Great Americans” calendar from Carl E. Reistle, Jr. (Humble Oil and Refining Co.), a copy of “Investment Companies” from Newton I. Steers, Jr. (Columbia Financial Corp.), “copies of the pictures taken at the Hotel Del” from Ralph Van Noy (General Mgr., Hotel Del Coronado), “lovely appointment books for 1964” from the Martin Company, & “a bag of Idaho Russet Baking Potatoes” from Congressmen Ralph Harding and Compton I. White, Jr. and the Idaho Potato and Onion Commission; for November through September items include – a book entitled The Attack On Our Free Choice from Charles N. Hecklemann (Monarch Books, Inc.), a copy of Banking and Monetary Studies from James J. Saxson (Comptroller of the Currency, Treasury Dept.), “copy of the ‘Resolution Concerning U. S. Military Purchases of Foreign Oil’ recently adopted by your Board of Directors” – the American Assoc. of Oil well Drilling Contractors, a copy of World Directory of Hydrobiological and Fisheris Institutions, news clipping from L. O. Hanssen of El Cajon with a conservative flair; an anti-communist message from Miss Irene Nolan of San Leandro, CA, a sweater from Gordon Luce (Home Federal Savings and Loan Assoc. of S.D.), a note and collection of editorials from San Diego papers from L. O. Hanssen (PR Southland Savings & Loan Assoc., La Mesa), news clipping and anti-Kennedy letter from Roger Randell of Oxnard, CA, copy of “A Review of Unveiling the Mystery of Creation” & comments from Arthur James Maurer, Sr. (True Bible Education Assoc., Seely, Wyoming), a copy of a report, “The Phantom Cities of California,” from Alfred E. Heller (President, California Tomorrow), a copy of Hotel and Motel Red Book from Albert L. McDermott (Attorney at Law, Washington, D.C.), “the book Aerospace Facts and Figures from Lloyd R. Kuhn (Legislative Counsel, Aerospace Industrial Assoc. of America, Inc.) & a new photograph of San Diego from James D. Forward, Jr. (Title Insurance and Trust Co.); for August through July items include – a copy of the Dan Smoot Report from John S. Upton of San Diego & his anti-integration views, “Dear Don [Campbell, La Jolla]: Many thanks for the kind words and the check for the Finance Committee,” attached is a copy of the RNC’s Battle Line newsletter with lots of scribbled commentary by Mr. Campbell, thanks to S.D. constituent C. H. Rutherford for sending the brochure written by political conservative G. Robert Gadberry – “‘Crabgrass’ in Our Backyard,” thanking constituent Roy Knox for sending a copy of LIFE LINES, a print of an editorial from the June issue of Modern Miller and Bakers News from Charles M. Yager (The Modern Miller Co.), an anti-Catholic Church article entitled “Warning of Impending Danger” from Jefferson K. Stickney, Jr. (Attorney at Law, S.D.), a copy of “a recently published book, Roman Catholicism from Loraine Boettner (Rock Port, Missouri), Wilson’s appreciation to Roscoe Hazard and the Young Republicans for the 4th of July celebration in San Diego, a “Fire Starter Stix” from Herbert Kunzel (President, Solar), having dinner at the “beautiful home overlooking the blue Pacific” of Mr. & Mrs. Gordon C. Luce of La Jolla, “the block of Food for Peace stamps for my collection” sent by Mrs. Ann Wilson of San Diego and receiving the current issue of The Lamp from Arthur Newmyer (Newmyer Associates, Inc.); June items – a set of desk flags from County Supervisor Frank Gibn son, a copy of the “Wheat Situation in the United States” from Frank A. Theis (Chairman, Committee for Economic Development, Kansas City Associates Center), a problem over a tax refund for constituent Miss Diane E. Farley, a copy of the 1963 edition of Travel USA Handbook from James C. Gross (National Assoc. of Travel Organizations), receiving a booklet on Missouri from Congressman Durward C. Hall (7th Dist.) & “receiving the Christopher Handbook ‘How to be a Leader by Communicating Your Ideas’” from Father James Keller (Dir. The Christophers, N.Y. City); for May through April items –a thank you to Wilson from Deborah Partridge Wolfe (Education Chief, House Committee on Education and Labor) for a copy of “Duty as Seen by Lincoln,” letters & a copy of the April issue of the Marine Corps Gazette featuring “So You Don’t Make Commandant” by Col. H. L. Oppenheimer (Ret.), to John N. Mades for “forwarding the airline tickets that Congressman Wilson left in his hotel room,” Wilson said he was enjoying the Heritage record album entitled “Mr. Lincoln’s Party” and “History of the RepublicanParty,” his appreciation of “the photograph taken during the recent Radio-Television Correspondents Association Dinner,” a gift of RCA Albums from George R. Marek (Radio Corp. of America), “Thank you for sending me an Indefinite Credit Card for the Disneyland Hotel,” a copy of the Arizona Highways magazine & “ a piece of art – a molten copper splatter. The splatter is 99.7 per cent pure copper” from Arizona Congressmen Senner, Jr., Rhodes & Udall, the current issue of Automobile Facts & Figures from Harlan V. Hadley (Automobile Manufactures Assoc., Inc.), The Michigan Yearbook for 1963 from Congressman Neil Staebler, the April issue of All Hands magazine from RAdm. H. V. Bird (Chief of Legislative Affairs, Dept. of the Navy), an album “compiled by Westinghouse Broadcast Company incorporating programs based on lectures originally delivered at the Pan American Union in Washington,” “Thanks for forwarding the SAN DIEGO REALTOR for March 28, in which was included the Property Owners’ Bill of Rights” see attached to Wilson’s letter & “Dear Mrs. Erb: Thank you for forwarding your REPORT TO AMERICA. Mrs. Erb was the Editor of the report for the American Coalition of Patriotic Societies, Inc.; items for March – stapled copies of news clippings, letter, periodical excerpt & news report from staunch political conservative Mrs. Austin Selz of La Jolla, a copy of Lothrop Stoddard’s 1922 The Revolt Against Civilization from W. T. Freeland (Freeland Products Co.), a copy of Volume IV of the U.S. Marine Operations in Korea from Brigadier General William K. Jones (Legislative Asst. to the Commandant), complimentary tickets for the National Rifle Association’s meeting in Washington in March, a booklet from the Bunge Corporation on the agricultural export trade, thanking constituent Frank L. Wiggens for calling attention to three recent articles in local newspapers, thanking Charles Armentraut (Editor, Letterwriting Guide) for providing 1500 copies of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s “well written Guides” to be distributed to San Diego citizens & thanking Maurice Uchitel of New York for sending “a copy of ON THE ROAD FOR UNCLE SAM.” This was an answer to The Ugly American.
