Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, maps, newsletters, pamphlets, phone message, excerpt from the Congressional Record, news clippings and press releases. These are filed from Jan. to Oct. 1959. Examples are: A stapled packet containing 3 letters (12/58, 1/5 & 1/7/59, a map, a multi-page fact sheet on the VIII Olympic Winter Games, 2 Organizing Committee Newsletters (8/58 & 12/58) & a pamphlet “Ticket Information VIII Olympic Winter Games Squaw Valley . . . 18-28, February 1960;” a letter (3/4/59) from Wilson to Robert King (VIII Olympic Games, San Francisco) & attached copy of the Olympic Committee’s Newsletter (Feb. 1959); a letter (4/28/59) from Robert L. King (Executive Director, Organizing Committee, VII Olympic Winter Games) to Wilson, two memorandums re/ “Military Support” for the games including cost estimates of $900,000 & a letter (4/13/59) from Avery Brundage (U.S. rep. to the Committee International Olympique- I.O.C.) to the Secretary of Defense Neil H. McElroy indicating that during trials at Squaw Valley dependence on voluntary help was not satisfactory, implying that military assistance was needed; phone message (6/3/59) from Robert King to Wilson re/ indicating that “Recent action of the International Olympic Committee does not make Red China member of that Body. King to Wilson re/ “appreciation for the alarm valve which you rang last week” as to the I.O.C. issue; a copy of Bob Wilson, M.C. to Robert King (6/23/59) re/ disturbing effect on the “games with public and press blasts at IOC regarding Red Chinese and North Korean controversies;” a letter (6/17/59) from Congressman Francis E. Dorn (12th Dist. Parma (Wilson’s Admin. Asst.) to Robert King re/ “Enclosed is the copy of insertion in the Record by Mel Laird;” stapled information from office notes, letters (July) & news clipping re/ Wilson responding to Orien W. Todd, Jr. (President, Stanley Andrews Sport Goods, Co. San Diego) and interest as to the summer 1960 Olympics and other topics related to San Diego; letters (7/9 & 7/22/59) & news clipping re/ further communications between Orien Todd & Wilson re/ track and field trials in San Diego; letters (7/31, 8/10 & 8/15) from Kenneth Wilson (President, United States Olympic Committee) & Wilson re/ clarification on the issue of Nationalist vs. Red China athletes at the Olympic Games – Communist China has voluntarily withdrawn and has shown no inclination to apply for readmission; a letter (10/15/59) from Chula Vista constituent Tanja J. Smith to Robert W. Seach (Personnel Director, Reno, Nevada) re/ an application for employment in connection with the VIII Olympic Winter Games.
