Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, official orders, office notes, memos, news releases, telegrams, memorandum and other items. These are filed from December back to January. Examples are: letters (Dec.) re/ With Wilson assistance, constituent Norman F. Joyal is qualified to transfer to the Standby Reserve ; stapled packet of letters (Dec.) re/ Even with Wilson’s assistance, Ronnie Dean Carpenter’s (football player for the San Diego Chargers and reclassified from 2S to 1A) attempt to enlist in the Marine Corps Reserve was unsuccessful; letters (Dec.) re/ Robert K. Cleator (General Mgr. Nuttall-Styris Co. & Commander Naval Reserve) is unsuccessful in obtaining all the retired reserve privileges he hoped to obtain; “Information For Members of Congress: 12 December 1963” from the Dept. of the Army & attached copy of a news release (12/12/64) from the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Public Affairs) re/ “Reserve Components Realigned To Increase Combat Readiness” - 4 pages; letters (12/9 & 12/16) from San Diego constituent Mrs. C. E. Philips & Wilson’s reply (12/29) re/ Mrs. Phillips conspiracy driven diatribe against the Washington establishment that was “triggered” off by a headline in the Sunday S.D. Union (12/13), “McNamara to Abolish Army Reserve System” and Wilson’s comment that he “had made strong opposition known to both President Johnson and Secretary of Defense McNamara on the guise of economy that they are aiding unilateral disarmament efforts;” letters & telegram (Dec.) re/ a similar message from Wilson to constituents Mrs. Licht, Mr. Pierce, Jr., Dr. Jere J. Nelson & Mr. Raymond H. Suttles – all of whom had written about their opposition to eliminating the Army Reserve; letters (Dec.-Nov.) re/ Even with Wilson’s assistance, Edmund A. Fitzgerald (Reserve Sgt., self-employed barber, married and children) was unable to be released from the inconvenience of Ready Reserve unit participation; stapled packet of letters and notes (Nov.) that cover several persons requesting assistance from Congressman Wilson – Robert Armando Rodriguez, Miss Kathryn S. Ray, Miss Thecla Bomhard, H. M. Webster & James M. Houck (V.A. Housing), George H. Monroe, Francis E. Diamond); letters (Oct.-Nov.) re/ Wilson helps Richard L. Kimble of El Cajon become a Lieutenant (junior grade) in the Naval Reserve; letters (Oct.) re/ El Cajon constituent Neil A. MacClellen (a baseball player under contract with the New York Yankees) is unsuccessful in being accepted by the Army Reserves so he can avoid Selective Service; letters (Sept.-Oct.) re/ Lt. Cmdr. James D. Morrow was unsuccessful in qualifying for retired pay based on his service in the Naval Reserve; letters (Sept.-Oct.) re/ John T. Clint, his employment requirements and conflicts with his Army Unit Reserve participation was not successful in getting assigned to a Control Group; letters (Oct.) re/ Wilson helps Santee constituent Jack D. Sypolt obtain his Reserve pay check and the Commanding General, 63d Division, had taken action to expedite the payment of troops; letters (Sept.) re/ Wilson assists Earl R. Davis’ transfer from his Ready Reserve unit to the Annual Training Control Group; letters (Aug.-Sept.) re/ Wilson helps Private Edward F. Deegan, Jr. being ordered to active duty in the U.S. Army; letters (July-Aug.) re/ information as to comparison of Goldwater’s and Johnson’s Senate votes on Civil Rights legislation & appeal for help for constituent Charles Cale to be admitted to a six-month Coast Guard reserve training program; letters & notes (June-Aug.) re/ more information on Charles Cale who is undergoing pre enlistment processing; memorandum, letters, office notes re/ the problems of Victor P. Primeaux in being assigned to a NROTC scholarship at various universities; stapled packet of letters (Feb.-July) re/ La Mesa constituent Ernest Ruiz’ problems with the Army Reserve’s training and duty requirements; letters & telegram (July) re/ Alpine constituent Corporal Jerry E. Archer is assisted by Wilson in a deferment of active duty in July “due to the critical nature of his job as a forest fire crewman;” letter & office notes (July) re/ potential help for Harry Bianconi in his application for the Air Force Reserve; a staple packet containing letters & a Veterans Administration Report of Transfer or Discharge Form DD 214 (Feb.-July) re/ Private Bertram Mueller, & others, as to his “45 day involuntary training” at Fort Ord and his disability; letters (Feb.-July) re/ Sgt. Thomas H. Davis, III, the National Guard, active duty training & conflict with his employment with the Dept. of History, San Diego College of Women, Alcala Park for the summer session of 1964; letters (May-June) re/ complications in meeting duty obligations because of employment and family responsibilities for Private Arlen R. Oseng of San Diego; letters, office note and memorandum (June) re/ Jack Edward Hamilton and his Navy Reserve obligation – indirectly Congressman Van Deerlin was also involved in Hamilton’s problem, since his daughter went to SDSC with Jack; letters (Apr.-May) re/ S.D. constituent Lowell A. White (Specialist Four) was successful in being transferred to the Control Group; letters (May-June) re/ Sgt. Edward G. Gergurich served two years in the Army and then participated in the Army Reserve. His employment and going to college full time created a hardship in attending a summer training session, but his appeal for an exemption was denied; letters (5/11 & 6/2) re/ a similar problem for William Eckert; a copy of a letter (5/25) from Darrell Holmes (Executive Dean, SDSC) to Sec. of Defense Robert S. McNamara informing about the complications for students with the May exercise and cites an Aztec advertisement which mentions “no further service interruptions;” stapled packet of letters & a news release (Mar.-Apr.) re/ Exercise Desert Strike (5/17-5/30), the National Guard & how this exercise complicated an estimated 70% of the National Guard in San Diego [whom] are college students.” They “were told a month ago that they would not have to participate in the May maneuver;” letters, list & office note (Mar.-Apr.) re/ Richard E. Linder, John M. Seely and other SDSC students who will be negatively impacted by Exercise Desert Strike; letters, duty orders and a copy of DD 214 re/ Attorney Robert P. McDonald (Procopio, Price and Cory) and Wilson respond to Specialist Four James C. Garrity’s educational desire to study abroad & are partially successful; letters (Mar.-May) re/ S.D. constituent John A. Foster, Jr. is released from the CA National Guard for family and employment reasons; letters (4/10 & 4/14) re/ La Mesa resident J. A. Jackson’s application for the NROTC program was being processed; stapled packet of letters & an office note (Jan.-Apr.) re/ Wilson & CA Senator Jack Schrade help Dr. Donald William Gross (President and General Mgr., Chem-tronics, Inc.) obtain a release from the U.S.N.R for Gross’ son to join the CA National Guard, but they were not successful; letters (Mar.-Apr.) re/ Edwin A. Persky, Jr. seeks Wilson’s assistance in obtaining an educational deferment from active duty for Edwin A. Persky, III, currently a Seaman in the Ready Reserve, and assigned to the USS Wiseman (DE667); letters (3/9 & 3/12) re/ Wilson received a complimentary copy of The Minute Man in Peace & War A History of the National Guard; letters (Jan.-Feb.) re/ clarification as to CA National Guard member Private Frank Hodge’s obligations.
