Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, telegrams, news releases, office notes, personnel information, post cards and other items. These are filed from Oct. ’65 back to Nov. ’64, but they are not always in chronological order. The majority of this correspondence covers August through May. Examples are: a staple packet of letters (10/27 – 6/18) re/ personal information as to Private Albert E. Jobe (Garden Crove, CA), the Marine Corps & Wilson interest in Jobe’s chronic back condition; a DOD News Release (9/30) re/ “Increased Readiness of Selected Army Reserve Components;” letters & office note (9/30-8/18) re/ the San Diego Chargers’ Barron Hilton & Sid Gilman appreciate Wilson’s assistance in obtaining temporary release for week-end drills for professional football player Frank J. Buncom (Airman 3rd Class, 942 Combat Support Squadron); letters & note (9/12 & 8/30) re/ Wilson received a misfiled letter originally sent to Congressman Van Deerlin as to the concerns of Patrick A. Walsh (CA National Guard in National City); (letters 8/12-7/15) re/ Wilson & the Air Force respond to the complaints of Lt. Col. W.C. Boyd about Travis Air Force Base reductions – “Why did they spend all this money for training just to drop us during a time of National Emergency?;” telegram (8/12) from Major Robert S. Kelly (USAR, Chairman, Public Relations, Reserve Officers Assn.) to Wilson re/ appreciation of “your committee’s refusal to officiate at the clandestine lynching of our nation’s loyal and dedicated reserve;” a letter (8/4) from Col. John T. Carlton (Reserve Officers Assn.) re/ details and appreciation of Wilson & his committee as to the Reserve Reduction-Merger hearings and inquiry; letters (8/18-7/29) re/ Wilson was not successful in obtaining a release from duty for Santee constituent Robert E. Stroman; letters (8/18-7/29) re/ Wilson obtains a packet of information on the Dept. of the Air Force for Lemon Grove constituent Earl Smart; letters (8/4-7/21) re/ S.D. constituent Marshall D. Bates was unsuccessful in obtaining a transfer from active to inactive status with the Army Reserves; letters (8/11-July 13) re/ a suggestion by Captain John A. Bowley (HHC 5th Bn 185th Armor) that selected numbers of officers and top noncoms be sent to brief tours of duty in Vietnam was not accepted by HQ Dept. of the Army, but the Captain could volunteer through the CA National Guard for a short-training tour in Vietnam; letters (7/8-7/5) re/ the Reserve Officers Assn.’s main objective was the reinstitution of re-computation for military retired personal on the basis of current military duty pay and their critical discussion of the Army – National Guard merger and the suggestion to return them to separate entities; letters (7/9-7/1) re/ La Jolla constituent & architect Loch Crane (a Major in the Air Force Reserves) was not able, even with Wilson’s assistance, to be promoted to Lt. Col.; letters (7/1-6/18) re/ constituent Ronnie Stokes was successful in being transferred to Standby Reserve and thus escape summer training; letters, telephone conversation & postal card (6/29-6/11) re/ Wilson to constituent Major Dewey Maltese - “We are pleased to learn of the favorable decision concerning your recent appeal to the Marine Corps” for federal service; a large packet of information (June ’65 back to 1952) regarding the military service of Dewey Maltese who enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on 22 January 1942 – note the 5 page “Fact sheet Regarding the Situation of Major Dewey Maltese, USMCR” for the details of this folder; letters (6/21 & 5/21) re/ Wilson replies to friend Harriett Henderson (Champaign, Illinois) re/ military service and conservative politics; letters & resolution (June) re/ the Military Order of the World Wars at their convention in San Mateo, CA; letters (6/22-3/3) re/ concerns of Bobby J. Ridenour, employee of Ducommun Metals & his military obligations for training; stapled packet of letters (6/6-5/7) re/ the complications of Navy reserve duty for Mission Bay High School graduate Philip V. Nau and Wilson’s assistance in these matters; letters (6/15-4/29) re/ Wilson’s assistance to constituent George M. Caywood as to his reserve obligation; letters (6/17-5/12) re/ the unsuccessful attempt of La Mesa constituent Douglas King to be transferred to the Standby Reserves; letters & postal card (6/11- 5/20) re/ constituent Col. Robert W. Dyer (Marine Corps Reserve and veteran of Tarawa) was unsuccessful in his attempt to remain in the active reserve; letters (6/8-5/13) re/ Lance Corporal Jerome C. Binen (employee of the Navy Electronics Laboratory) was not successful in being transferred to the Standby Reserves; letters (6/4-5/27) re/ Wilson appreciated the comments of St. Paul Minnesota resident Philip McDonald (sent to him by Congressman Clark MacGregor) which supported the traditional concept keeping the Army Reserve as a separate entity – Wilson was against what he termed “an unwieldy governor-permissive defense posture;” several stapled packets of letters & telegrams (May) re/ the Reserve Officers Assn.’s “unanimous opposition to the Pentagon’s Reserve/Guard merger” and their proposed “Bill” facilitating changes that the organization supported; letters (5/19-4/4) re/ complications for Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Richard R. Verbrugh in joining the La Mesa Police Dept.; letters (5/18-5/5) re/ Wilson to Mrs. Beatrice M. Duckworth as to “inquires on behalf of your son, Private Gilbert Dias;” letters (5/1-3/1) re/ details related to Captain Vincent J. Oslie “who wishes to be reconsidered for promotion or be retained in an active reserve status to complete years of satisfactory service;” letters (5/5 & 4/30) & Statement of the Reserve Officers Assn. of the U.S. against “the controversial plan to abolish the active Army Reserves and reduce the Reserve forces;” letters (4/8 & 4/3) re/ opposition to the reorganization plan for the Army Reserve from Warren K. Miller (President, Eastshore Lines, S.F. CA); letters (3/25-2/16) re/ Wilson assists Lester Balinger (Sec.-Treas. Cannery Workers & Fishermen’s Union) obtain standby reserve status for Airman Jerry J. Jones; letters (3/20-3/2) re/ Wilson assists Private Norman F. Joyal avoid a 45-day active duty training at Fort Polk in Louisiana; letters (3/23-1/25) re/ Dr. Robert H. Franks (Capt. CA National Guard) and his status with the local draft board if he is discharged and becomes a member of the Army Reserve; letters (3/8-2/23) re/ Wilson assists El Cajon constituent Dale G. Walton clarify his inquiry as to the issue of over strength of officers in the Reserve grade of lieutenant colonel; letters (3/1/65-5/21/64) re/ Congressman Wilson and earlier Congressman Van Deerlin assist Lawrence D. Brass (El Cajon & Army Reservist) in getting his active duty training cancelled because of family health issues and employment necessities; a one page copy of “Pittsburg Chapter Military Order of the World Wars RESOLUTION . . . 26 January 1965” in opposition to the proposed merger of the U. S. Army Reserve and National Guard; letters (2/5 & 1/16) re/ disagreement as to changes in the Army Reserve program between constituent Edward T. Cramer and Wilson. Fifteen year reservist Cramer supported McNamara’s proposals; letters (2/5 & 2/2) & a copy of a statement by the Reserve Officers Assn. in opposition to the proposed merger; Memorandum To: Boss From: Ed (1/12) re/ comments on merger, Goldwater and Drew Pearson; stapled packet containing letters, copy of DOD news release and telegram (Jan.’65 – Dec. ’64) re/ proposed realignment of reserves and combat readiness; a torn copy of a telegram (date missing) to Wilson protesting “strongly plan to merge USAF reserve forces with National Guard;” stapled packet of letters (1/12/65- 11/22/64) re/ La Jolla constituent Peter H. Selby requests and receives assistance from Wilson as to his son Michael’s Naval Reserve duties, current college studies and career plans.
