Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, post cards, telegrams & maps & “a revised stationing plan” for the 6th U.S. Army: Examples are: a letter (9/15/55) from Colonel TC USAR Arthur G. Syran (Commanding Officer, Mobilization Designation Detachment No. 17, Fort Myer, VA) to Wilson re/ new training year for Army Reserve Groups and “Your presentation in June of this year on the subject, ‘Congress Looks at the Reserve Program’ was extremely enlightening;” a letter (1/21/58) from Chula Vista constituent Richard L. Nelson and Wilson’s reply (4/14/58) re/ Wilson responds to Nelson’s interest in the House Armed Service Committee’s planned investigation of “the treatment of certain Army Reserve Officers;” letters (Oct.-Dec. 1959) re/ responses to inquiries on behalf of Private First Class Bruce Lighthart (a La Mesa resident) “as to the possibility of transfer to a Control Group because of hardship involving his attendance at school and his work schedule;” letters & post card (Aug.-Oct., 1959) re/ the success of Donald J. Gross (La Jolla) of enrolling in the ROTC program at Pomona College and Claremont Men’s College while he is regularly enrolled in Harvey Mudd College; letters (July & Aug. 1959) re/ Chula Vista constituent Robert E. Seward’s success, with Wilson’s help, in securing a waiver from Army Reserve Summer Camp - “everyone I talk to has promised their support for you in our next election;” letters (July-Aug., 1959) re/ Wilson assists friends Norma and Paul Pearson work through a problem with their son Don’s Ready Reserve obligations, their letters also discuss politics, Nixon and other personal topics; letters & telegrams (July-Aug. 1959) re/ the problems of Dr. Marvin Kasanoff (Optometrist, National City) with his military reserve obligations and requested waivers; letters (July 1959) re/ San Diegan George A. Riley is assisted by Wilson in obtaining information from the Dept. of the Army as to the Army Reserve Program; letters (June 1959) re/ Wilson assists the Legal Aid Society of San Diego, Inc. in “obtaining for our Assistant Counsel, Mr. Sidney E. Tamburine, a waiver of annual active duty for military training, thus ensuring our community the necessary legal services afforded by our Society;” letters (Apr.-May 1959) re/ Wilson assists San Diegan Richard A. Oliphant in obtaining information from the Dept. of the Army “relative to the Army’s six-months’ active duty for training program;” letters (Apr.-May 1959) re/ Captain Festus W. Calvert (Detachment Commander, 310th Convalescent Center, San Diego) is assisted by Wilson in obtaining a response to his recommendations from the Commanding General of the Sixth Army; letters (Dec. 1959-Apr. 1959) re/ La Mesa resident Dr. Edward R. Zoukar (Optometrist, San Diego) is assisted by Wilson in being transferred to a USAR Control Group; a letter (3/6/59) from Major General John J. Binns (Chief of Staff, USAR) to Wilson and attached enclosure re/ “an outline map of your state keyed to a stationing list which indicates the location of the various Army Reserve units;” a letter (3/19/59) from Lt. General Charles D. Palmer (Commanding, HQ., Sixth U.S. Army, Presidio, San Francisco, Calif.) to Wilson and attached copy of “a revised stationing plan which supersedes the plan furnished you in the letter of 6 March” – this is a 13 page government document indicting “Facilities and Stationing Plan” for California Northern and Southern Sectors – San Diego’s location was Fort Rosecrans with 9 Units; a 3/23/59 “Memo To: Mr. Fletcher From: Cathy Subject: Tan Tek Lum” re/ information on the status of Mr. Lum as to officer candidate list and active duty.
