A collection of letters, memorandum, news clippings, envelopes, reports, news releases & other items: Examples are: office memorandum (n.d.) re/ “Tom Offenberger US News Report Please pull together all the letters (of past 3 mos) where had on men called to duty in reserves and draft;” news clipping Army Times, Nov. 15, 1961, “Recalls Smooth, Pentagon Says;” 2 page Dept. of Defense, “Information Pertaining to Recall of Reserves” (11/27/61); a letter (11/29/61) from Wilson to the Honorable Robert S. McNamara and 2 empty envelopes re/ “Enclosed is a three page petition dated November 20, 1961, submitted to me by Reservists who have been called back to duty and are now stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington;” 3 more copies of Wilson’s letter to McNamara re/ “These men demand an explanation as to why the Reserves are now being called up when the draft call for December will be reduced by some 9000 men over September’s call;” a 2 page Dept. of Defense, “Excerpt from President’s Message Pertaining to the Recall of the Reserves, November 29, 1961, page A-10, Washington Evening Star;” a copy of the 6 page, December 4, 1961, “Summary of Inspector General’s Report of Conditions at Fort Lewis, Washington;” a copy of Congressman Wilson’s press release (12/5/61) re/ his challenge to “Army Secretary Elvis J. Stahr’s contention that the problems which had prompted complaints from Army Reservists had been corrected and that the morale of the ‘overwhelming majority’ of these reservists is high;” copies of Asst. Secretary of Defense Carlisle P. Runge’s letter (12/7/61) to Congressman Wilson re/ “your inquiry of November 29, 1961 in behalf of a group of signatories to a petition from reservists now stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington;” office note (n.d.) re/ “Leon – you said to look through this file and make sure all had been answered – On the Sgt. Walker Corres -- . . . also looks like there was a notation File N.A. on the McIntyre letter. . . .;” a copy of a letter (1/8/62) from Sp/4 John B. McIntyre (Co. B, 495th Engr. Bn. Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri re/ his complaints about his life and career being interrupted for the second time in three years “so that I may serve in the U.S. Army;” letters (1/24, 25, 30,31 & 2/6/62) re/ responses to Wilson’s inquiry to the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of the Navy “with respect to a possible early release of Reservists called back due to the Berlin situation; a stapled packet of letters & a news clipping (Nov. ’61 & Feb.-Mar. ’62) re/ a continuation of the allegations concerning deficiencies in the recent recall of Reserve personnel at Fort Lewis, Washington and Wilson’s concerns; letters (11/28 & 12/1/61 & 4/13/62) re/ Wilson responds to constituent Norman C. Robert’s concerns about complaints from Army Reservists; a letter (4/12/62) from Major General Perry M. Hoistington, II (Dep. Shellaby’s Nov. letter about her son being in the reservist call up and her doubts about a national emergency; letters (11/22 &11/29/61 & 4/13/62) re/ La Mesan Ralph Wooley, serving as a “Representative for Petition Signers,” complained that “The reduction in the draft call is just one of many things that has reduced the morale of the reservists here at Fort Lewis.” He attached 3 pages of signed petitions to the U.S. Congress (11/20/61) complaining about the call up and reducing the draft; a stapled packet letters & an envelope (11/7, 23,28 & 3/6/61 & 4/13/62) re/ the complaints as to the call up and circumstances at both Fort Lewis and at Fort Ord in California; letters (11/7, 11/28 & 4/13/62) re/ Wilson updating SP4 Jimmie D. Little (Fort Lewis) by sending him an information sheet from the Secretary of the Army; letters (11/21, 25, 28 & 29/61 & 4/13/62) re/ more information on the reservist call up and duty at Fort Lewis for one of Wilson’s constituent, R.W. Hunter.
