Scope and Contents

A collection of a newspaper promotion for roads, letters, maps, telegram, maps and other items: examples are: a foldout reprint from The Hearst Sunday Newspapers of Feb. 1, 1953 featuring “A Hearst Plan For Better Roads;” a stapled packet containing letters (4/6 & 4/12/55) and a large map from the Dept. of the Navy District Public Works Office, 11th Naval District, entitled “Access Highway From Seal Beach-Long Beach & San Pedro Area To San Diego Area (11-4-54); letters (Oct.- Dec.’55) re/ discussions as to the proposed US101 freeway, Leucadia-Del Mar and other concerns – Wilson indicated he was convinced that the rerouting of 101 was important; letters and map (Nov.-Dec. ’55) re/ discussion of the Interstate route from San Diego to Tucson, Arizona allows access to Phoenix. The map from the Saturday Evening Post depicts the National System of Interstate Highways in red and black; letters (Jan.-Feb. ’56) re/ Wilson said he would “be happy to support [Congressman Dawson’s] proposal for increasing the authorization to $16 million annually for expanding road construction in National Parks and Monuments” – ref. Utah – Arches, Zion and Bryce; telegram, note and letter (2/56) re/ discussion on rerouting 101 and also notation on 395-71 and military departments; letters, news clipping and business card (12/56-1/57) re/ discussion of Highway 80, modified route, La Mesa, Mission Valley Road and Alvarado Freeway; memorandum, memo and letters (2/57) re/ information to Wilson from Commissioner of Public Roads concerning a letter from Bob Burns (President, El Cajon Valley Chamber of Commerce) regarding the routing of traffic as a result of the Interstate Highway system – cost totals mentioned; a letter (6/28/57) from Mrs. Augusta Nichols & Wilson’s reply (7/8/57) re/ a proposal to increase government revenue by means of tolls for the use of highways & other personal information; a letter (12/4/57) from James Mussatti (General Mgr. Calif. Chamber of Commerce) & Wilson’s reply (12/19/57) re/ an interest in the Federal Highway program and the Board of Directors adopted by unanimous vote a series of recommendations; a letter (12/12/57) from Arnold Klaus (Assistant Mgr. San Diego Chamber of Commerce), an attached 2 page copy of their “Recommended Actions” & Wilson’s letter (12/18/57) appreciating their recommendations for highway construction.
