Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, a statement and a report: these are: a letter (6/8/53) from the Commissioner of Public Works, F.V. du Pont to Brig. Gen. Paul F. Yount (Acting Chief of Transportation, Dept. of the Army) re/ Senate Joint Resolution No. 57, State of California “pertaining to the improvement of the Brawley-Glamis road;” a letter (2/19/54) from Robert Apitz (Sec., San Diego Highway Development Assn.) and Wilson’s reply (2/25/54) re/ a copy of Apitz’ letter to Senator Knowland discussing the allocation of Federal Funds from the PRA to San Diego County on a matching basis; letters (2/6, 12 & 14/57) re/ Bob Burns (Pres., El Cajon Valley Chamber of Commerce) received a letter from the Bureau of Public Works (Dept. of Commerce) as to the routing of traffic on Highway 80 as to the new Interstate System and was concerned that the Arizona to San Diego route would be bypassed; a letter (6/13/58) from the San Diego Industrial Dev. Council & Wilson’s reply (7/1/58) re/ fear that Highway 80 would be removed from the Interstate System – Wilson said no!; letters, news release & map (12/58-1/6/59) re/ CA District Engineer J. Dekema sends Wilson information about the proposed State Highway project related to Highway 80 from Flume Drive in El Cajon to the Laguna Junction; a letter (6/24/59 ) from Miss Gloria Fersberg (El Cajon) and Wilson’s reply (2/2/59) re/ the consideration of a low-level route to Arizona and a death on Vejas Grade; two letters (1/20 & 2/1/60) from the Automobile Club of Southern California and Wilson and the attached “copy of a statement recently presented at the Annual Meeting of the California State Chamber of Commerce, entitled “The Highway User – His Share in Federal Highway Building” – 7 pages; letters (May – July 1960) re/ an extensive discussion between Wilson, the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, the San Diego Highway Development Assn., the Bureau of Public Works, the Dept. of Defense, the Army and the Navy concerning Highway 80’s development and an evacuation route east from San Diego; letters (May-Nov. 1960) and a Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce Report (4/14/60) re/ the use of private engineers on Federal Highway Projects – the correspondence in this folder illustrates the ongoing debate over public vs. privative enterprises; a letter (12/6/60) from C.E. Skidmore (General Mgr., Brown-Bevis-Industrial Equipment Co. (Los Angeles, CA) to Wilson re/ favoring National Highway Program and listing those like AAA, AAR, API and others opposing the gasoline tax, etc.
