A collection of letters, maps, resolutions & a news release: Examples are: several letters (Feb. & Mar. 1961) re/ the concerns of Imperial Beach residents, such as the West View Elementary Parent-Teacher Assn. & Robert Briggs about reducing the speed on certain segments of State Highway 75 – see attached “Map of Imperial Beach and Hobart Heights;” letters (Mar.-June 1961) re/ citizen concerns related to a road across the Sierra Nevada Mts. at Mammoth Pass & La Jolla developer Harry L. Summers’ letter related to “our 5,400 acre Rancho Bernardo project on 395” & his interest that 395 be included in the Interstate Highway System; a letter (8/11/61) from Wilson to William Valverde of San Ysidro re/ Interstate 8 replacing Highway 80 and cost estimates; letters (6/2 & 12/61) re/ the Southern Equipment & Supply Co. favors H.R. 6713, a Bill to provide additional funds for the Federal highway program if it does not add to our tax burden; letters (3/19 & 3/27/62) re/ Dr. Robert G. Wirth’s telling indictment of “Slaughter On The Highways” – especially on 395; a letter (5/15/61) from Forest Cooper (Sec.-Treas. Western Assn. of State Highway Officials and attached resolution supporting the Federal Highway Administrator Rex M. Whitton; a copy of a letter (9/14/61) from David Thompson (Executive Dir. S.D. County Traffic Safety Council) to Robert B. Bradford (Dir., Div. of Public Works & Highways, State of California) re/ the various problems for 101 between Rosecrans Blvd. and San Clemente and especially the 25 miles to Leucadia – where “nearly 650 accidents have been reported . . . almost 400 persons have been injured and 30 persons have lost their lives in this short section of U.S. 101;” a stapled packet of letters (Oct.-Nov. 1961) re/ the concerns of constituent Peter Martin (the Esmeralda Mining Co.) and others as to the Lusardi Truck Trail and other locked roads inhibiting access; copies of letter (12/61-2/62) re/ Santee & Sycamore Canyon roads; letters (Dec. 1961-Feb. 1962) re/ discussion of the John C. Henberger Company’s concern about the “Use in Federal Aid Highway Projects by Material Manufactured or Produced By Convict Labor;” letter (2/21/62 & a News Release from Congressman John A. Blatnik (Chairman, Special Subcommittee on the Federal-Aid Highway Program) re/ a rejection of the accusation in national news about widespread wrongdoing by highway officials; letters (Feb.-Mar. 1962) re/ complaints from Mr. & Mrs. Claude F. Shouse (Pacific Beach residents) about failure of street paving along part of Chalcedony Street bordering Capeheart Housing; letters (3/12 & 4/3/62) re/ Wilson and Gov. Brown exchange comments at to Interstate 15 southward from San Bernardino to San Diego; a letter (4/10/62) from the CA Dir. of Public Works to Wilson and attached CA Senate Resolution No. 24 re/ praise for the State Highway system to offset questions of efficiency, etc.; two letters (6/14/62) from Jacob Dekama (District Engineer, Division of Highways, Dept. of Public Works, State of California) and attached foldout map showing “Route of Proposed State Highway . . . Between North City Limits of Oceanside and the Orange County Line” – 12/11/61 & 4/6/62; a letter (8/22/62) from El Cajon constituent R.C. Singleton and Wilson’s reply (9/23/62) re/ personal thanks for cook book, the latest Agricultural Yearbook and improving Highway 80 to the Imperial Valley. Singleton suggested building it on the Mexican side since road grades and curves there are far better than our route 80. Wilson indicated that those that discussed this indicated “today’s high powered engines” will meet our U.S. side demands.
