Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, photographs & maps: Examples are: letters (Mar.1960) re/ Wilson and the Bureau of Public Roads respond to the concerns of Julian constituent Ralph B. Slaughter (General Contractor) that the “State of California is not letting enough highway construction jobs, and we are told it is because Federal-aid funds are not being released;” letters (12/13 & 28/60) re/ the National City Chamber of Commerce suggests that I-15 be extended to Mexican Border, thus facilitating a highway from Canada to Mexico; letters (10/13 & 11/1/60) re/ CA Dept. of Public Works invite to Wilson to attend a meeting in Los Angeles to discuss the various operations of the CA Div. of Highways. Leon W. Parma replied for Wilson that the Congressman would be unable to attend; a copy of a Wilson letter (7/22/60) to Edward Gabrielson (S an Diego City Engineer) sending him an “attached letter” for your files; a letter (6/25/60) from Mrs. Alta L. Hoskins & Wilson’s reply (7/5/60 re/ “Thank you for your intelligent letter about the Balboa Park Freeway” – she wrote “The people of San Diego are incensed over the cutting up of Balboa Park for a Freeway,” she came to San Diego as teenager in May 1912; The remainder of the items in this folder pertain to concerns about the Vandenberg Highway. There a number of photocopies of letters, newspaper editorials, black and white photographs and maps that focus on the problems of this highway. This is referred to as the Lompoc-Casmalia-Santa Maria Road to Vandenberg Air Force Base.
